Atman Errachid found himself surrounded by a cheering crowd as he watched his home country of Morocco play Spain in the World Cup. Such exuberance would have made sense back home, but Errachid was delighted to see such enthusiasm from an audience one wouldn't assume would be so thrilled about their victory – Israelis.
Errachid is in Israel currently earning his master's degree in Jewish Studies at the University of Haifa, a campus that is home to a diverse student body. There, shared society is not a theory or an elusive dream one hopes for – but a reality.

“A hot wind is blowing in the east, and the dry grass is waiting for a spark” is the opening line of a November 29 opinion piece in The Washington Post by two former American diplomats. They describe their expected reality of Israelis and Palestinians under the new government in Israel.
In their opinion, three forces operate in the region: a weak Palestinian Authority, a “radical right-wing” government, and a risk-averse Democratic administration. Hovering in the background are Iranian activities and the countries of the Abraham Accords “burying their heads in the sand” by ignoring the Palestinian issue.

Iran will recognize the armies of the European countries operating in the region as terrorist organizations, Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran's Islamic Council, declared during a meeting of the country's legislature on Sunday, according to the state-affiliated Tasnim media outlet.
"We identify the armies of European countries in the region as terrorist groups and organizations, and we will take the necessary measures to deal with them," Ghalibaf reportedly said.

(January 22, 2023 / JNS) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday the dismissal of Shas chairman Aryeh Deri from his ministerial positions.
The announcement follows last week’s Supreme Court ruling that Deri’s appointment was “unreasonable in the extreme” due to a prior tax fraud conviction.
In his letter of dismissal, Netanyahu wrote, “As you know, I decided to appoint you as deputy prime minister and minister of the interior and health with the approval of the majority of Knesset members due to the fact that I see you as an anchor of experience, wisdom and responsibility that are important to the State of Israel at all times, and especially at this time.”

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir demanded on Sunday that laws be applied equally to Israelis and Palestinians in Judea and Samaria.
His remarks came after an outpost erected to commemorate Rabbi Haim Druckman, the spiritual leader of the religious Zionism movement and who died in late December, was evacuated on Friday.
“I believe in the rule of law but there cannot be one law for Arabs and one law for Jews. The law should also be enforced on Khan al-Ahmar and dozens of illegal Arab outposts,” said Ben-Gvir.

Israel's El Al airline is looking to expand through merger deals in the North American market, increasing flights to the continent, the company announced earlier this week.
According to CEO Dina Ben-Tal Ganancia, the national flag carrier is restarting their "Ambassadors" program, first launched in 2011, in tandem with the pro-Israel nonprofit StandWithUs. The El Al Ambassadors program was shut down for two years due to the COVID pandemic, but it is now up and running once again.

Russia is returning to the days of the former Soviet Union when it comes to antisemitism, fired by the need for a “scapegoat,” the former Chief Rabbi of Moscow asserted in an interview published on Thursday.
“Russia is returning to the Soviet Union, not in terms of communism, but in terms of its isolation from the rest of the world, antisemitism, general mobilization, repression of dissidents, and economic hardship,” Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt said in an interview with the Spanish Catholic news outlet Alfa & Omega. “It has become a very unpleasant place to live.”
The OCR letter, which was obtained by the Journal, said that they would be investigating “whether the University failed to respond appropriately in the fall 2022 semester to notice from Jewish law students, faculty, and staff that they experienced a hostile environment at the law school based on their shared Jewish ancestry when University-recognized student organizations passed a bylaw against inviting speakers who support ‘Zionism, the state of Israel, and the occupation of Palestine.’”
