  1. NYSUN – Iran Establishes Missile Defense Shield in Syria

    Iran is deploying missiles in Syria in preparation for military action if it is attacked over its nuclear program, U.N. officials in the region said.
    Under a mutual defense pact signed between Damascus and Tehran in 2005, Syria agreed to the deployment of sophisticated weaponry on its territory.
    The Iranians have now decided to implement the agreement following a meeting last month of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, which is chaired by a former president, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
    Iran is preparing to transfer dozens of medium-range Shahab-3 and Russian-made Scud-C missiles, together with Scud-B missiles. Most of the missiles can be fired from mobile launchers and are capable of hitting targets right across Israel.

      (dpa) – Der Iran hat als viertgrößter Ölproduzent der Welt Benzin für Privatautos rationiert und damit gewaltsame Proteste entfacht. Aufgebrachte Autofahrer steckten am Mittwoch nach Berichten lokaler Medien in der Hauptstadt Teheran mindestens fünf Tankstellen in Brand. Es habe auch Überfälle auf Banken und Supermärkte gegeben.
      Nach Augenzeugenberichte n wurden bei den Ausschreitungen Protestrufe gegen Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinedschad laut. In Teheran löste die Nachricht am Dienstagabend zunächst einen Ansturm auf Tankstellen und ein Verkehrschaos aus, da viele Iraner vor Inkrafttreten der Rationierung noch tanken wollten.
      Mit dem Schritt will die Regierung nach eigenen Angaben das Loch im Staatshaushalt stopfen und der hohen Luftverschmutzung durch den Straßenverkehr in den Großstädten Herr werden. Parlamentsprä sident Gholam-Ali Hadad-Adel sprach von einer vorbeugenden Maßnahme angesichts möglicher Sanktionen im Atomstreit mit dem Westen.

    Iran is a country awash with oil, yet its people riot because there is not enough petrol. This simple fact is a vivid demonstration of the deep economic malaise that forms Iran’s Achilles heel.
    Scarcely any other country is as fabulously endowed with natural resources. Iran possesses 130 billion barrels of proven oil reserves – more than anywhere else in the world save for Saudi Arabia. It also has an abundance of natural gas and a long coastline from which these commodities can be exported.
    At present, Iran produces 4.3 million barrels of oil every day. This may sound impressive – but it could turn out another million if its drilling rigs and pipelines were not falling to pieces. The inescapable truth is that Iran is lamentably failing to exploit its own natural wealth.
    The Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is keenly aware of this. But he faces an acute dilemma. Recovery is only possible if Iran allows Western trade and investment. The vital oil sector will never reach full potential without Western money.
