  1. JCPA – Halting Iran’s Nuclear Weapons Program: Iranian Vulnerabilities and Western Policy Options – Brig. Gen. (res.) Yossi Kuperwasser
Despite Iran’s enormous oil and gas reserves, ironically, one of its most glaring areas of vulnerability is in the economic sphere. Iran is a country whose revenues stem almost completely from the export of crude oil. Yet the international sanctions imposed so far do not indicate that there has been any serious mobilization for a real struggle against the Iranian nuclear bomb. Iran, according to a June 2007 assessment by IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, is „speeding up its enrichment capacity.“

  8. NYSUNImam Accused in JFK Plot Wanted Help From Iran
    By JOSEPH GOLDSTEIN
A Shiite imam accused of plotting to blow up fuel tanks at John F. Kennedy International Airport wanted to seek Iranian backing for the terrorist plot.
The disclosure came yesterday in a court decision denying bail to the Trinidadian- based cleric, Kareem Ibrahim.
Mr. Ibrahim, 62, is one of four men arrested last month on charges connected to the plot. At the time, American law enforcement officials said Mr. Ibrahim encouraged his co-conspirators to seek funding for the attack from outside their home countries of Trinidad or Guyana. While American authorities have not provided more details, a judge in Trinidad wrote that evidence, including tape recordings, suggests Mr. Ibrahim intended to seek backing for the plot from individuals in Iran or Britain.
In those recordings, Judge Prakash Moosai wrote

  9. Payvand’s Iran NewsAmnesty International is concerned about trade union activist imprisoned in Iran
    Source: Amnesty International
Trade union activist Mahmoud Salehi, who has been imprisoned since 9 April, is seriously ill and is allegedly not receiving the specialist medical treatment that he requires. Amnesty International believes that he is a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression and association in connection with the 2004 May Day demonstration, and with his peaceful trade union activities.
Mahmoud Salehi is the Spokesperson for the Organisational Committee to Establish Trade Unions, former President of the Saqez Bakery Workers‘ Association, and co-founder of the Coordinating Committee to Form Workers‘ Organisations. He was arrested after a peaceful demonstration to celebrate May Day 2004 along with six other trade union activists. They were all were later released on bail that same month. In November 2005 he was sentenced to five years‘ imprisonment and three years‘ internal exile in the city of Ghorveh, in the north western province of Kordestan. At his trial, the prosecutor reportedly cited his trade union activities as evidence against him, and referred to a meeting he had held with officials from the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) in April 2004, shortly before the May Day demonstrations.

  10. SPIEGEL ONLINE IRAN CRACKS DOWN ON CRITICAL MEDIA
    Press Accused of ‚Creeping Coup‘
Iran’s mullah regime has said there are signs of a „creeping coup,“ in the media, after it banned a pro-reform newspaper and a news agency. Tehran now interprets any criticism of its failure to improve the economy as proof of a US-inspired plot.

Iran is crackind down on a press it accuses of fostering a „creeping coup.“Iran’s culture ministry has accused the press of fostering a creeping coup, just days after banning a newspaper and a news agency critical of the government. The tougher line on media criticism comes amid growing public unrest over fuel rationing and energy price increases. International moves to impose even tougher sanctions on Tehran are also putting pressure on Tehran.
Ham Mihan, a pro-reform newspaper, and the ILNA online news agency were both shut down by the authorities last Tuesday. The reformist and liberal press has been criticizing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for failing to deliver on his electoral promise to improve the economy but the regime is interpreting any negative press as proof of a plot.
„There are some signs of a creeping coup in the press,“ Culture Minister Hossein Saffar Harandi said on Saturday. Speaking to the Iranian news agency ISNA, he said that meant „a person moving within a framework of action to overthrow (the system).“

  16. JCPA Iran’s Regional Ambitions: Implications for Israel, Iraq, and the Gulf States
    Amir Taheri
Iran’s national interest would be to regard Israel as a strategic ally and partner because Iran does not want a Middle East which is entirely Arab. But the Islamic Republic wants to lead the Muslim world, create an Islamic superpower, and save mankind from a Judeo-Christian conspiracy.
Jerusalem contains the al-Aqsa Mosque, but it is a Sunni mosque. Iranians are Shi’ites and cannot pray there because their prayers would not be accepted. So liberating Jerusalem is a totally useless project from an Iranian religious perspective.
The majority of the Shi’ite clergy, in Iran and elsewhere, are against the Iranian regime. There are more Iranian mullahs in prison today than workers or intellectuals. All of the grand ayatollahs are now bitter enemies of the regime because it is a distortion of Shi’ite theology.
Those who are fighting the regime inside Iran are mostly industrial workers, who have been on strike in many areas. Another group fighting the regime is women, who are very active, especially in hundreds of NGOs. The regular Iranian armed forces, as distinct from the Revolutionary Guards, are also unhappy with the present situation.
The real issue in Iran is how it can find a way to emerge from its revolutionary experience, keep part of it, discard other parts, and really become a nation state. Once Iran has become a nation state, instead of a country devoted to an abstract cause, then it will display normal behavior and not be an existential threat to anybody.
