    Einen Appell an den österreichischen Öl- und Gaskonzern OMV hat die außenpolitische Sprecherin der Grünen, Ulrike Lunacek, gerichtete. Sie forderte in einer Aussendung die OMV auf, die Freilassung der beiden im Iran zum Tode verurteilten Journalisten Adnan Hassanpour und Abdolvahed „Hiwa“ Botimar zu fordern und ihren Einfluss in diese Richtung geltend zu machen.
    Die OMV ist seit Jahren im Iran wirtschaftlich aktiv und hat erst jüngst einen Ausbau des Engagements mit Iran vereinbart. „Nachdem die OMV sich öffentlich für die Meinungsfreiheit stark macht – so wird alljährlich gemeinsam mit ‚Reporter ohne Grenzen‘ der ‚Press Freedom Award‘, ein Menschenrechtspreis für engagierte JournalistInnen, vergeben – sollte der Konzern dies nun auch unter Beweis stellen“, erklärte Lunacek.
    Die OMV könne, so Lunacek, nun die Chance wahrnehmen, auch einen zivilgesellschaftli chen Beitrag zu leisten. „Die OMV hat sich selbst ein Engagement für die Pressefreiheit auf die Fahnen geschrieben. Ich erwarte, dass sie dieses Engagement auch in Iran unter Beweis stellt. Wenn es schon ein wirtschaftliches Engagement eines heimischen Konzerns gibt, dann sollte dies auch gesellschaftspoliti sch in Iran spürbar werden“, so Lunacek. (APA)

      Wien (1.8.07): Die GRÜNEN fordern die OMV auf, sich für inhaftierte Journalisten im Iran einzusetzen: Grund ist das geplante Engagement der OMV im Iran und die anhaltende Skepsis von KritikerInnen, dass die OMV Menschenrechtsstand ards im Iran mutmaßlich nicht einfordern werde. Nun gibt es einen Elchtest.
      Einen dringenden Appell an die OMV richtet die außenpolitische Sprecherin der Grünen, Ulrike Lunacek.     Everything was seemingly coordinated in secret: Iranian Oil Minister Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh’s visit to Ankara two weeks ago; the signing of the memorandum of understanding with his Turkish counterpart, Hilmi Guler; the final phrasing of the then-unpublished agreement, and the benefits allocated to each country. Everything was completed a mere week before the Turkish parliamentary elections, in which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) won with 47 percent of the vote.
    An AKP member thought that publicizing the Iranian-Turkish natural gas agreement before the elections would help bolster the ruling party, and the anti-American approach indeed encouraged the Turkish nationalists from the National Movement Party to cross over and vote for Erdogan’s Islamist party.
    The Iranian-Turkish agreement is one of several deals that demonstrate the paradoxes of the Middle East, and serves as further proof that the big money, major financial interests no less, can dwarf ideology. This time, a triple paradox is at play: U.S. ally Turkey signs a major deal with Iran; Iran, Israel’s enemy, is not concerned by Turkey’s relations with the Little Satan, and Israel does not protest Turkey’s part in the deal. When Turkey buys drones from Israel, the U.S. needs Turkey to exert calm over Iraq and Iran aspires to strengthen its position in the Middle East – ideology tends to lose its luster.

     APPolice officers and other spectators look on as five convicted criminals are publicly hanged in Mashad, Iran on Wednesday.
    The criminals were convicted on various charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping, according to reports on the official Web site of the Iranian state broadcasting company. It was the second round of collective executions in 10 days — earlier in July authorities hanged 12 criminals convicted on similar charges in Tehran.

    The 15 people listed above were arrested on 9 July, the eighth anniversary of student demonstrations in 1999 which were violently suppressed by the security forces. The eight who are named are believed to be held in solitary confinement in Section 209 of Evin Prison in Tehran, which is run by the Ministry of Intelligence; the other seven are also held in Evin Prison and may also be in solitary confinement. Amnesty International believes they are prisoners of conscience.

    «Internet im Iran? Gibt’s nicht!» Wer so denkt, irrt. Das Netz ist in Teheran so verbreitet wie in Berlin. Iranische Frauen mögen vor allem Myspace, wie Stefan Wirner erfahren hat.
    Die iranischen Mullahs haben ein Problem: das Internet. Zwar lassen sich Presse und Fernsehen überwachen und zensieren, aber das Internet ist noch immer ein Medium, das sich nicht so leicht kontrollieren lässt.
    Immer wieder hört man Berichte darüber, wie sehr die iranische Führungsschicht bemüht ist, die Freiheit im Netz einzuschränken. So trat Anfang des Jahres ein Gesetz in Kraft, dass es allen Betreibern von Internetseiten im Iran vorschreibt, sich bei den Behörden registrieren zu lassen. Im vorigen Jahr befahl das Regime den Providern, ihre Brandbreite auf maximal 128 Kilobit pro Sekunde zu senken, wodurch das Herunterladen von bestimmten Inhalten aus dem Ausland erschwert werden sollte. Die Organisation «Reporter ohne Grenzen» zählt den Iran zu den 13 «größten Feinden des Internet».

    July 31, 2007  — Two years have passed since the former hard-line mayor of Tehran, Mahmud Ahmadinejad, came to power on a pledge to improve the economic conditions for Iran’s citizens.
    Yet many believe that the economy has in the past two years revealed itself as the Iranian president’s Achilles heel.
    „Iran’s economy is currently moving just on the edge of a collapse,“ Paris-based economics professor Fereydoon Khavand tells Radio Farda. „Ahmadinejad‘ s decisions have led to economic chaos in the country. At present, nobody knows which direction Iran’s economy is heading or what the country’s economic goals are.“
    Since Ahmadinejad‘ s inauguration on August 6, 2005, the Islamic establishment has taken a tougher line on a number of domestic and international issues, including Iran’s nuclear program.

    Iranian-made settlements: There is a non-Arab country in the Middle East which, at least according to western and Arabic media, has been deporting tens of thousands of Arabs from their homes, building settlements and filling them with non-Arabs, in an attempt to change the demographic composition of their region.
    That country has been oppressing Arabs, violating their basic human rights, detaining thousands, including women and children and expropriating their farmlands for the settlements it constructs.

    Iranian security forces have arrested reformist journalists Farshad Ghorbanipour and Soheil Asefi and confiscated their personal possessions, including documents and computers.

    In the past eight months, there have been 148 executions by public hanging in Iran. Eight of them have been carried out in Mashhad in the past 10 days, for delinquency.     The Iranian reformist daily Rooz reported today that the effects of the sanctions on Iran are becoming increasingly evident, despite regime pressures on the media not to report on them.
    For example, some Chinese engineers have left Iran and the road development and paving project signed with China has come to a standstill. Also, Russia has postponed the continuation of the Bushehr nuclear reactor project to autumn of 2008. There is also a shortage of spare parts for airplanes and ships, causing operational malfunctions.
