  2. SPIEGEL ONLINE RÜCKZUG /  Iran droht deutschen Banken

ihre Geschäfte komplett einstellen will.

  4. RSF –  Iran: three journalism students held, tortured for past three months over „anti-Islamic“ articles
Three journalism students who edit pro-reform newspapers at Tehran’s Amir Kabir university – Ehsan Mansouri, Madjid Tavakoli and Ahmad Ghassaban – were arrested in May after four student publications containing „anti-Islamic“ articles and cartoons were distributed on 30 April. According to their relatives, the three students deny having anything to do with these publications and suspect that militiamen produced them using the logos of the real student newspapers in order to discredit them.
They are being held without trial in section 209 of Evin prison (on the outskirts of Tehran), where they no access to a lawyer. They began a hunger strike on 14 July in protest against their detention. At a press conference organised by lawyer and Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi on 20 August, the mother of one of the students said they had been tortured in an attempt to obtain confessions. The judicial authorities denied that they had been tortured.

  5. OMEDIA Iran’s „refinery diplomacy“
Iran is interested in oil cooperation around the world. Is this about economic investment or a means of bypassing sanctions?
    Dani Shiratz (8/20/2007)
There has been a recent build up of reports regarding Iranian sponsored projects and active Iranian partnership in the construction of oil refineries around the world. The reports show no preference on the part of Iran for a particular country, and it tends to do business with countries that boast an anti-American record. Iran may also be „casting its bread on the waters“.
Iranian efforts to attract foreign investors to support the local oil industry continue alongside this policy. The former Iranian oil minister Kaza Vaziri-Hameneh has stated that his country requires some $15 billion in investment to continue developing the oil refining sector specifically, and the entire oil sector as a whole.
In some cases, the Iranian deals are solely economic and aim at providing Iran with a safety valve in the event of future sanctions and a sizeable cash income. No less important is the fact that they provide an additional source of the oil distillates vital to the Iranian population. However, one type of deal is far more serious than the rest.

  6. OMEDIA Iran Meddles in the Battle for Shiite Authority
Power struggles inside the Shiites world are another battlefront in the struggle between Iran and more moderate states
    Miki Segal (8/20/2007)
The struggle taking place today among the Shiites in Iraq has both religious and political implications and will affect Shiites around the world. The intent of the struggle is to influence the character of Iraq and its political future. Grand Ayatollah al-Sistani is opposed to the involvement of clerics in politics and to violent resistance against the American presence in Iraq. Others, such as Muqtada al-Sadr, who enjoys Iranian support, want to implement the Iranian model of theocracy – „Wilayat al-faqih.“

  7. HANDELSBLATT Richtungsentscheidu ng/ Weichenstellung in Irans Machtzentrum

  9. MEMRIBLOG Iranian Paper: Iran Should Form Strategic Axis With China, Russia
In an analysis, the Iranian weekly Sobh-e Sadeq, the mouthpiece of Iranian Supreme leader ‚Ali Khamenei circulated among the Revolutionary Guards, called on Shanghai Alliance member countries to accept Iran as a member. Iran’s membership, the paper said, would create a new regional strategic axis, to include Iran, Russia, and China – and this could reduce the West’s political, security, and economic maneuvering ability in the region as well as in Asia.
