  1. Haaretz Report: Cheney may have mulled pushing Israel to hit Iran
Newsweek Magazine reported Sunday that Vice President Richard Cheney may have considered a plan for Israeli missile strikes against an Iranian nuclear site in an effort to draw a military response from Iran, which could in turn spark a U.S. offensive against targets in the Islamic Republic.
Citing two unnamed sources the magazine called knowledgeable, the magazine quoted David Wurmser, until last month Cheney’s Middle East advisor, as having told a small group of people that „Cheney had been mulling the idea of pushing for limited Israeli missile strikes against the Iranian nuclear site at Natanz – and perhaps other sites – in order to provoke Tehran into lashing out.“

JERUSALEM–Business opportunities in Iran were the theme of a German government-sponsore d conference last week in Darmstadt, Germany. „Iran is accustomed to crises,“ the conference invitation delicately noted, „but somehow always keeps going forward.“ In fact, Iran’s resilience is made possible in no small measure by Germany itself, which remains one of Iran’s largest trading partners. 2.

    4. haaretz Sarkozy urges tougher Iran sanctions, warns French firms – By Reuters
French President Nicolas Sarkozy called for tougher international sanctions against Iran’s nuclear program and warned French oil giant Total and gas firm Gaz de France to refrain from investing in Iran.
In an interview with The New York Times, published on the newspaper’s Web site late on Sunday, Sarkozy pointedly eschewed his foreign minister’s talk of preparing for war with Iran but said more pressure must be applied to make Tehran renounce its nuclear ambitions.
„It’s not true that there is no solution between surrender and war,“ Sarkozy said, according to a text released by his office.
„Between surrender and war, there is a range of solutions that exist like the reinforcement of sanctions which will eventually have an effect,“ he said, calling for a third U.N. resolution tightening economic restrictions on Tehran.
If the U.N. Security Council was unable to agree on another resolution, Sarkozy said he would support the European Union adopting additional sanctions.
The French leader, in New York to attend his first United Nations General Assembly session since his election in May, said he had urged Total and Gaz de France to refrain from bidding for new projects in Iran and told French banks to stop doing business there.
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana played down French calls for the 27-nation bloc to consider its own sanctions against Iran, saying there had been no discussion of such an idea in the EU to date.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said last week he saw no prospect of the U.N. Security Council agreeing tougher measures on Iran because of Russian and Chinese resistance, so the Europeans should consider their own measures to hit credit, investment and insurance.
But Solana told reporters in New York, where he will attend the annual United Nations General Assembly session, that no such idea was on the EU’s agenda.

    1. HC IRAN FORSCHUNG Fact-sheet  Iran
      Atommacht Iran

NYSUNColumbia Withdraws an Invitation to Ahmadinejad – By ELIANA JOHNSON
Overruling a prominent dean, the president of Columbia University, Lee Bollinger, yesterday withdrew an invitation to the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The dean of Columbia’s school of international and public affairs, Lisa Anderson, had independently invited Mr. Ahmadinejad to speak at the World Leader’s Forum, a year-long program that aims to unite „renowned intellectuals and cultural icons from many nations to examine global challenges and explore cultural perspectives. „
In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, Mr. Bollinger said he canceled Mr. Ahmadinejad‘ s invitation because he couldn’t be certain it would „reflect the academic values that are the hallmark of a University event such as our World Leaders Forum.“ He told Ms. Anderson that Mr. Ahmadinejad could speak at the school of international and public affairs, just not as a part of the university-wide leader’s forum.
Ms. Anderson’s assistant cited an inability to arrange for proper security as the reason for the cancellation.
Mr. Bollinger told Ms. Anderson that while he finds Mr. Ahmadinejad‘ s views „repugnant,“ she has the „right and responsibility to invite speakers whom she believes will add to the academic experience of our students.“

The invitation by Columbia University to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran beggars belief and brings one of America’s foremost institutions of higher learning into disrepute. Columbia’s distinguished president, Lee Bollinger, defended the invitation as being in keeping with „Columbia’s long-standing tradition of serving as a major forum of robust debate.“
Of course, that is nonsense. Does anyone seriously believe that Columbia would invite a politician or scholar who denied that American slavery took place, or alleged that its effects on African-Americans was benign or exaggerated? Would Columbia host a Grand Wizard of the KKK who called for African nations to be wiped off the map?
And yet, Ahmadinejad is far worse. Not only has he denied the Holocaust and called repeatedly for Israel’s destruction, he has gone beyond words and worked hard to put his plan into action.
Ahmadinejad‘ s Iran is one of the world’s foremost sponsors of international terror, especially the Hizbullah posse of killers, and he is now hell-bent on building thermonuclear weapons with which he might just accomplish what Hitler could not: the annihilation of half the world’s Jews with the push of a single button.

    5. HONESTREPORTING– COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY: GIVING A PLATFORM TO TERROR?

Where is the line drawn between freedom of speech and complicity in terror? Iranian president Ahmadinejad is currently in New York, being feted by the media and the UN.

The media is a powerful weapon in the hands of extremists and terrorists. Ahmadinejad has already appeared on CBS’s 60 Minutes where he claimed that „Israel is not a nation“ and that he is „against terrorism“.

Ahmadinejad is appearing via videolink at a National Press Club luncheon and is being given a platform at Columbia University where a dean says Columbia would issue a similar invite to Hitler under the same circumstances.

Giving Ahmadinejad a credible platform gives a degree of legitimacy to the crimes of the Iranian regime – why should he be given the opportunity to defend Iran’s criminal support for terror, Holocaust denial, calls for the destruction of Israel and the killing of American troops in Iraq?

As Attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner makes clear: „[The media] are every bit the supporters of the terrorist organizations that Tehran and Damascus are when they facilitate the publication of [terrorists‘ ] messages.“

Jewish organizations in the United States are planning large-scale demonstrations – involving thousands of protesters – this week to express their mounting anger at Columbia University’s invitation to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, due to deliver a speech on campus this Monday.
Columbia University has so far refused to respond to pressure to cancel the appearance, despite the widespread outrage at Ahmadinejad‘ s invitation.
Dani Klein, Campus Director of the pro-Israel activism group Stand With Us, told Ynetnews: „Our message to Columbia University is that of disgust. This is the second year in a row that they have extended their hand to Ahmadinejad. We are not asking Columbia University to cancel the event in the name of free speech, rather we are showing our disappointment and disapproval of inviting him to begin with.“

Q1x00129_9 USA TODAY’s Rick Hampson reports that Jewish organizations in New York are working frantically to organize a rally outside the United Nations on Monday to protest the visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
They were racing in part because the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur begins at sundown, Hampson says.
„The U.S. is obligated to let him in, but we’re also obligated to let him know how the American people feel about his message,“ says
Malcolm Hoenlein, head of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations. He expects „thousands and thousands“ of demonstrators to participate in the U.N. rally.
Michael Miller, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, says the timing of Ahmadinejad’s visit and the religious holiday is fortunate, because it means many Jews will be in synagogues, where they can discuss the visit and learn about the rally. Hoenlin agrees, saying, „it will be a big topic of discussion, including from the pulpit.“

    1. THE JERUSALEM POST   –  Livni to be diplomat and protester at UN
      Herb Keinon , Sep. 23, 2007
Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni will use both a megaphone outside the UN and a microphone from the podium inside the General Assembly in the coming week to warn the world of the dangers of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and a nuclear Iran.
Livni, who arrived in New York Sunday to take part in the annual UN General Assembly meeting, is scheduled to address and take part in a demonstration against Ahmadinejad in front of the UN on Monday being organized by a coalition of Jewish groups.
Ahmadinejad also arrived in New York Sunday for the UN meeting.
An aide to Livni explained her participation in the demonstration, a rare step for diplomats at her level, by saying that she felt very strongly that the world was not taking tough enough action against the Iranian nuclear program, and that this was an opportunity to sound the alarm.
A week later she will deliver Israel’s address inside the UN building, and again is expected to focus the attention on Iran.
Prior to the demonstration, Livni is scheduled to address a meeting of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC,) a group of donors to the Palestinian Authority. This meeting is intended to prepare the ground for a wider donors‘ conference in December. That meeting is part of a number of steps that US President George W. Bush outlined in his July 16 speech meant to bolster Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in New York on Sunday for the 62nd annual UN General Assembly as critics protested his planned speech at Columbia University and UN visit.
Behind the scenes US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice continues working to promote a possible third round of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran as a response to its advancing nuclear program.
Foreign Affairs Minister Tzipi Livni, who is also in New York, has spoken out harshly against the divisive visit. „In a just world, his visit would never have been authorized and Iran would not be a member of the United Nations,“ said Livni.

Alireza Jafarzadeh is president of Strategy Policy Consulting, Inc. and a foreign affairs analyst for FOX News Channel. He served as a US spokesman for the National Coalition of Resistance of Iran and his articles have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal. In his new book, The Iranian Threat: President Ahmadinejad and the Coming Nuclear Crisis (Palgrave MacMillan), Mr. Jafarzadeh brings to light Iran’s latest efforts to hide its nuclear facilities as well as the regime’s covert operations inside Iraq. He traces Ahmadinejad‘ s history of torturing political prisoners, his pedigree as the protegé of Iran’s radical mullahs, and his zealous, longstanding quest to make Iran a nuclear power. Mr. Jafarzadeh addressed the Middle East Forum on his book on September 12, 2007. The following is a report on his briefing that appeared in The Bulletin.

Raketen, Überwachungsdrohnen, Kampfpanzer, Kampfjets – alles „Made in Iran“, verkündet Präsident Mahmoud Ahmadinedschad (F. l.) stolz.

BM

  20. columbiaspectator. com As Visit Looms, Alum Released From Prison– By Alex Peacocke
While Columbia entertains one Iranian from Tehran today, the plight of another has come to a close in the past week.
Iranian-American urban planning and policy expert Kian Tajbakhsh, Ph.D. ’93, was released from prison last Wednesday after being arrested in Iran on May 11, 2007 while conducting research for George Soros‘ Open Policy Institute, a left-wing policy analysis group. He was investigating the prevalence of intravenous drug use in Iran when he was arrested. According to the Washington Post, Tajbakhsh is the second of four imprisoned Iranian-American academics to be released from Iranian prisons in the last eight months.
According to various international news organizations, Tajbakhsh was one of many prominent Iranian scholars who was detained for what Al-Jazeera described as „anti-regime activities“ and what the British Broadcasting Corporation called „fomenting revolution“ and „espionage“ after appearing in a protest against the government only a few days before his arrest.
Noting the proximity of the release to the announcement of the invitation of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran to Columbia last Wednesday, School of International and Public Affairs Dean John Coatsworth said that „the timing is fortuitous and the coincidence of the two events is happy news.“
„On behalf of the entire Columbia community, I want to say how relieved we are to hear of Dr. Kian Tajbakhsh’s release from prison in Tehran. Months ago, I joined the chorus of voices calling for the government of Iran to free Dr. Tajbakhsh,“ University President Lee Bollinger said in a statement released last Friday.
„In recent discussions with the Iranian Mission, I communicated that I would raise his case—among many other issues—directly and publicly if President Ahmadinejad came to speak on our campus,“ Bollinger added.
