NEW YORK, 25. September . Bei seiner Rede in der New Yorker Columbia University hat der iranische Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinedschad den Amerikanern die Atombombenabwü rfe auf Hiroshima und Nagasaki vorgehalten.
„Monopolismus in Wissenschaft und Politik führen zu nicht wieder gutzumachenden Folgen in der Welt. Die Opfer von Hiroshima und Nagasaki sind noch nicht vergessen. Ihre Nachkommen leiden immer noch unter den Folgen des Geschehenen“, erklärte Ahmadinejad.
Die USA hatten 1945 auf das mit Hitler-Deutschland verbündete Japan Atombomben abgeworfen.

Bush warf er vor, weltweit Kriege zu verursachen und Diskriminierungen zu schaffen. Ahmadinedschad sollte am Dienstag vor den Vereinten Nationen sprechen. Sein Besuch in den USA hat heftige Proteste ausgelöst.
Der Iran erkenne Israel nicht an, „weil es auf Besatzung und Rassismus basiert“, sagte Ahmadinedschad nach einem Treffen mit einer jüdischen Gruppe, die gegen den Staat Israel ist. „Es greift ständig seine Nachbarn an. Es tötet Menschen. Es vertreibt sie aus ihren Häusern.“ Gegen die USA gewandt fügte er hinzu: „Wir sind gegen die Art und Weise, wie die US-Regierung die Welt organisieren will. Wir sind überzeugt, diese Methode ist falsch, sie führt zu Krieg, Diskriminierung und Blutvergießen.“
Ahmadinedschad hat vor Monaten gefordert, Israel von der Landkarte zu tilgen und ist international wiederholt für seine Äußerungen über den jüdischen Staat scharf kritisiert worden. US-Außenministerin Condoleezza Rice begrüßte am Montag die Entscheidung der New Yorker Polizei, Ahmadinedschad keinen Besuch am Anschlagsort des 11. September 2001 im Süden von Manhattan zu genehmigen. „Das ist der Präsident eines Landes, das wahrscheinlich der größte staatliche Förderer des Terrorismus ist“, sagte sie.

Wegen mehrerer Verstöße gegen Wirtschaftsembargos und Finanzsanktionen hat die Deutsche Bundesbank momentan mehr als 61 Millionen Euro eingefroren. Das haben Recherchen von NDR INFO ergeben.
Nach Angaben der Bank gehören die Gelder 13 Personen, Organisationen und Einrichtungen in Deutschland. Wem genau die einzelnen Summen zuzuordnen sind, wollte eine Sprecherin der Bundesbank nicht sagen. Experten gehen davon aus, dass der größte Teil aus unerlaubten Geschäften mit dem Iran stammt. Die von den Vereinten Nationen und der Europäischen Union erlassenen und teilweise seit Jahren geltenden Sanktionen beschränken den Finanz-
und Warentransfer unter anderem mit Staaten wie dem Iran, dem Irak, dem Sudan und dem Libanon. Die Einhaltung der Bedingungen wird unter anderem von der Bundesbank kontrolliert.
Nach Informationen von NDR Info sind andere Sanktionen weniger effizient. Im Zusammenhang mit den so genannten EU-Sanktionslisten etwa, die jedem Bürger der Europäischen Union Geschäfte mit Mitgliedern internationaler Terror-Netzwerke wie Al Qaida verbieten, hat die Bundesbank momentan lediglich 12.000 Euro beschlagnahmt. Diese gehören 18 Personen. Auf den fortlaufend aktualisierten EU-Sanktionslisten sind Namen von Personen und Organisationen aufgeführt, die im Verdacht stehen, Verbindungen zum internationalen Terrorismus zu haben.
Wirtschaftsverbä nde wie der BDI halten diese Sanktionslisten im Kampf gegen den Terrorismus für wenig wirksam und überaus aufwändig, weil die Unternehmen ihre Geschäftskontakte ständig mit den mehrere Hundert Namen umfassenden Listen vergleichen müssen.

Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) — Protesters at Columbia University demonstrated against a speech by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad scheduled for this afternoon.
At least two rallies sponsored by campus groups — one on campus, the other near Columbia’s entrance on Manhattan’s Upper West Side — are scheduled for today. About 4,000 people are on the sidewalks of Broadway between 116th and 117th Street. Police declined to estimate the size of the crowd. -

Roone Artledge is about three quarters of the way full an hour before Ahmadinejad is scheduled to speak. There are several students sporting „Stop Ahmadinejad’s Evil“ t shirts, sitting near the back. Secret service officials are milling about, and the press who was allowed to bring their computer in had to drop their bags and allow them to be sniffed by dogs.
To get into the event, students were required to show their ID six times. They had to have their hand stamped and go through a metal detector. But now that they’re in, everyone’s feeling festive. -

ADL – ADL: AHMADINEJAD’S SPEECH AT COLUMBIA „A CHARADE“
New York, NY, September 24, 2007 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today called Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech at Columbia University „a charade of half-answers and obfuscation“ and anything but the much-touted scholarly free exchange of ideas promised by the university.
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:
Columbia University did not serve its students, city, or reputation in providing a platform to the charade of half-answers and obfuscation delivered by President Ahmadinejad. President Ahmadinejad’s statements added nothing to what we already know about the Iranian regime.
Asked directly if Iran seeks to destroy Israel, he did not answer the question. Asked how he could ignore the decades of scholarship on the Holocaust and instead embrace the shoddy manipulations of Holocaust deniers, he spoke of Palestinians, academic freedom – anything but answering the question. He misrepresented public information on Iran’s nuclear program and its development of nuclear weapons. He ignored questions about Iran’s human rights outrages.
Indeed, the fact that Columbia President Lee Bollinger himself felt it necessary to slam the Iranian leader in his opening remarks underscored the fact that Columbia should never have invited this ‘petty and cruel dictator‘ in the first place.

The dean of the Law School at New York’s Columbia University, David Schizer, has criticized a decision by the university to invite Iran’s hard-line president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to campus. Ahmadinejad, in New York this week for the opening of the UN General Assembly, has accepted an invitation from the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs to speak on Monday. Schizer said in a statement: „Although we believe in free and open debate at Columbia and should never suppress points of view, we are also committed to academic standards… A high-quality academic discussion depends on intellectual honesty but, unfortunately, Mr. Ahmadinejad has proven himself, time and again, to be uninterested in whether his words are true.“
Schizer described the Iranian leader as a „reprehensible and dangerous figure who presides over a repressive regime, is responsible for the death of American soldiers, denies the Holocaust, and calls for the destruction of Israel.“ Still, Schizer added, „I recognize that others within our community take a different view in good faith, and that they have the right to extend invitations that I personally would not extend.“
Columbia’s president, Lee Bollinger, had defended the invitation on the grounds of free speech and academic freedom. Bollinger pledged that during his introduction of Ahamdinejad he would issue „a series of sharp challenges“ on several issues, including „the Iranian president’s denial of the Holocaust, his public call for the destruction of the State of Israel; his reported support for international terrorism that targets innocent civilians and American troops; Iran’s pursuit of nuclear ambitions in opposition to international sanction; his government’s widely documented suppression of civil society and particularly of women’s rights; and his government’s imprisoning of journalists and scholars, including one of Columbia’s own alumni, Dr. Kian Tajbakhsh.“

WJC – Ahmadinejad criticized during visit Columbia University
25 September 2007 – During a speech at New York’s Columbia University, Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has again defended Holocaust revisionists and raised questions about who carried out the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The hard-line leader was introduced by the president of Columbia University, Lee Bollinger, as a „petty and cruel dictator“. Ahmadinejad tried to portray himself as an intellectual and claimed that his country respected reason and science. He provoked derisive laughter by responding to a question about Iran’s execution of homosexuals by saying: „In Iran, we do not have homosexuals like in your country.“
„There were insults and claims that were incorrect, regretfully, “ Ahmadinejad said in response to Bollinger’s introduction. The Iranian president drew audience applause at times, such as when he bemoaned the plight of the Palestinians. However he often declined to offer simple answers the audience sought, responding instead with his own questions or long statements about history and justice. Asked by an audience member if Iran sought the destruction of Israel, Ahmadinejad did not answer directly. „We are friends of all the nations,“ he said. „We are friends with the Jewish people. There are many Jews in Iran living peacefully with security.“
In his opening remarks, Bollinger also attacked Ahmadinejad over his repeated denials of the Shoah. „In a December 2005 state television broadcast, you described the Holocaust as the fabricated legend. One year later, you held a two-day conference of Holocaust deniers,“ the Columbia president said, adding that whilst this might fool the illiterate and ignorant. „When you come to a place like this, it makes you simply ridiculous. The truth is that the Holocaust is the most documented event in human history,“ Bollinger said.
Ahmadinejad denied he had questioned whether the Holocaust occurred: „Granted this happened, what does it have to do with the Palestinian people?“ he said. But the Iranian leader went on to say that he was defending the rights of European ‘academics‘ imprisoned for „questioning certain aspects“ of the Holocaust. „There is nothing known as absolute,“ Ahmadinejad said. He said the Holocaust has been abused as a justification for Israeli mistreatment of the Palestinians.
Meanwhile, thousands gathered at the United Nations headquarters at a demonstration against Ahmadinejad organized by leading American Jewish organizations. The rally was attended by Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni and prominent members of New York’s congressional delegation.

Emotions ran high at Columbia University on Monday, when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke on campus – to the disgust of many but with the approval of others.
In front of the school’s gates on Broadway in northern Manhattan, Stephen Gruber, 51, held up his Columbia diploma along with a sign reading: „Diploma for sale – 50 cents.“
„My father is a graduate of this school, and he passed away. I am going to return his degree posthumously. They have diminished the value of my [own] diploma, which is why I have it on sale for 50 cents,“ Gruber said.
Colin Felsman, 20, a currently enrolled student, said the visit was a great opportunity, adding: „He’s the president of Iran, not the president of the world. Saying Columbia University would have made a similar offer to Adolf Hitler were he in New York, a university dean defended the institution‘ s decision to host Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on campus on Monday.
In an interview with Fox News over the weekend, John Coatsworth, dean of Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, where Ahmadinejad will be speaking as part of an annual World Leaders Forum, said: „If Hitler was in the United States and wanted a platform from which to speak, he would have plenty of platforms at which to speak in the US. If he were willingly to engage in debate and discussion, and be challenged by Columbia students and faculty, we would certainly invite him.“
Coatsworth’s remarks set off a storm of angry responses, while city officials struggled with security details for the Iranian president’s visit and campus and other groups prepared a series of protests both there and at the UN.
„Statements by Coatsworth show that this is not about freedom of speech, but about moral standing and values,“ said Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. „Somehow the president of Columbia has an extended view of his moral powers of persuasion.“
Hoenlein called Columbia’s decision „outrageous, “ but the primary issue, he said, was Ahmadinejad‘ s appearance in New York. „The message is that nations of the world are inviting a guy who is in violation of the very charter of the UN, let alone Security Council resolutions, “ said Hoenlein.
A protest organized by the Conference of Presidents and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, in cooperation with the United Jewish Communities, UJA-Federation of New York and Jewish Council for Public Affairs, will be held Monday outside the UN, where Ahmadinejad is to address the General Assembly on Tuesday. -

Sehr gekonnt spielt der Iran ein Katz-und-Maus- Spiel mit den großen Drei der Europäischen Union, Großbritannien, Frankreich und Deutschland. Mehr als 18 Jahre lang hat das Land das Sicherheitsabkommen mit der Internationalen Atomenergiebehö rde (IAEA) sowie den Atomwaffensperrvert rag missachtet und hinter dem Rücken der Inspektoren Atomforschung betrieben und Anreicherungsexperi mente durchgeführt.
Dann begann der Iran mit der Urananreicherung im großen Stil. Dabei stellte Teheran die ganze Zeit in Aussicht, dass diese Aktivitäten eingestellt werden könnten, wenn nur die richtigen Zugeständnisse gemacht würden. Der Iran brauchte Zeit, um sein Atomwaffenprogramm weiter zu entwickeln – und diese Zeit gaben wir ihm, indem wir uns in endlose Verhandlungen verstricken ließen.
Und wir geben sie ihm nach wie vor. Ende Juni einigten sich Irans Chefunterhändler Ali Laridschani und IAEA-Chef Mohamed el-Baradei darauf, innerhalb von zwei Monaten einen „Aktionsplan“ auszuarbeiten, um offene Fragen der IAEA bezüglich des umstrittenen Atomprogramms Teherans zu klären. Kürzlich ist ein IAEA-Team von einer Inspektion der Baustelle des iranischen Schwerwasserreaktor s zurückgekehrt.
Dies mag zwar nach einem Fortschritt klingen, doch derartige Inspektionen sind Teil des Sicherheitsabkommen s mit dem Iran. Gleichzeitig jedoch beansprucht der Iran ein „unveräußerliches Recht“, gemäß den Bedingungen des Atomwaffensperrvert rags die Vorteile nuklearer Technologien nutzen zu dürfen, da die Programme ausschließlich „friedlichen Zwecken“ dienten. Fakt ist jedoch, dass der Iran kein solches Recht in Anspruch nehmen darf, solange er an einem Programm arbeitet, das entscheidende Teile des Atomwaffensperrvert rags mit Füßen tritt und das offensichtlich auf die Herstellung atomarer Waffen zielt. Bei atomaren Schutzklauseln kann es nur das Prinzip „ganz oder gar nicht“ geben, und kein Land darf sich aussuchen, welchen Vorschriften es Folge leisten möchte und welchen nicht. - MORGENPOST – USA: Cheney wollte Iran angreifen lassen

Washington – US-Vizepräsident Richard Cheney soll erwogen haben, die iranische Führung so zu provozieren, dass sie den USA einen Vorwand für einen Krieg liefert. Unter Berufung auf Aussagen von Cheneys früherem Berater David Wurmser berichtet das Magazin „Newsweek“, Cheney habe Israel zu Raketenangriffen auf iranische Atomanlagen überreden wollen. Wenn der Iran dann zurückgeschlagen hätte, wäre das der Anlass für massive US-Angriffe auf militärische und atomare Ziele in dem Golfstaat gewesen. Wurmser habe das wenige Wochen vor seinem Rücktritt aus dem Cheney-Stab im August vor Zeugen gesagt.
