    Teheran – Die Zahl von 3000 Zentrifugen sei am heutigen Mittwoch erreicht worden, sagte Ahmadinedschad in einer vom Fernsehen übertragenen Rede vor Anhängern in der südiranischen Stadt Birdschand.
    3000 Zentrifugen reichen bei optimaler Funktionsweise und Auslastung theoretisch aus, um in weniger als einem Jahr ausreichend atomwaffenfähiges Uran anzureichern.      
    Ahmadinedschads Äußerung ist jedoch mit Vorsicht zu genießen. Bereits mehrfach hatte er verkündet, dass die Zahl der für den Bau einer Atombombe nötigen Zentrifugen erreicht worden sei,     zuletzt im September und im Oktober. 
    Die Zahl von 3000 steht jedoch im Widerspruch zu     Informationen der Internationalen Atomenergiebehö rde (IAEA). In ihrem Bericht vom 19. August ist zu lesen, dass in Iran 1968 Zentrifugen in Betrieb seien, 656 weitere befänden sich noch im Versuchs- oder Installationsstadiu m.

    Israel is not alone in its concern about Iran’s nuclear weapons program. In fact, the nations most worried about Iran are its immediate neighbors who have no doubts about the hegemonic ambitions of the radical Islamists in Tehran.
    The Crown Prince of Bahrain was the first Gulf leader to explicitly accuse Iran of lying about its weapons program. „While they don’t have the bomb yet, they are developing it, or the capability for it,“ Salman bin Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa said.137
    In October 2007, a senior Iranian general said that suicide bombers were ready to strike at targets throughout the Gulf „if necessary.“ The threat was aimed at Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Earlier in 2007, a close associate of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad resurrected an old claim on Bahrain as Iran’s 14th province, which Bahrain’s foreign minister said „touched on the legitimacy of our country.“ The effect of Iran’s saber rattling, Giles Whittell wrote, „is especially chilling in Bahrain as the only Sunni-led country with a Shia majority that is not at war or on the brink of war.“138
    European leaders also clearly see Iran as a threat to their interests. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said, for example, „Iran is trying to acquire a nuclear bomb. I say to the French, it’s unacceptable.“ Similarly, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stated, „I’m emphatically in favor of solving the problem through negotiations, but we also need to be ready to impose further sanctions if Iran does not give ground.“139 And Great Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown reiterated, „We are absolutely clear that we are ready, and will push for, further sanctions against Iran….We will work through the United Nations to achieve this. We are prepared also to have tougher European sanctions. We want to make it clear that we do not support the nuclear ambitions of that country.“140 President George W. Bush has been even more emphatic, „I’ve told people that, if you’re interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon.“

    A report in the Italian daily L’opinione states that all the gallows used by the Iranian government to conduct public hangings are „made in Italy.“ This is not the first time Italy’s companies have been embarrassed publicly by their business connections to Iran. A recent piece of investigative reporting in the newsweekly L’espresso, about which I’ve blogged, exposed more embarrassing deals—among which was listed Iran’s purchase of ultrafast patrol boats originally designed for Italian police patrol boats fighting sea smugglers. Iran reportedly bought the boats, and the plans to build them, in 1998 for its revolutionary guards. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that, when Iran seized fifteen British sailors (and one iPod) in March 2007, it was using Italian-made boats. These exposures are sure to complicate Italy’s ambitions to join the EU-3—France, Germany and Great Britain—as Iran’s interlocutors on its nuclear dossier.
    In truth, though, the embarrassment should not be Italy’s alone. European companies routinely supply Iran with seemingly harmless products, which Tehran diverts to less than transparent purposes. That’s the reason why, on October 11, the Financial Action Task Force—a 34-member intergovernmental body more widely known as the Egmont Group—issued a warning about Iran:

    „Hoffentlich können wir die Iraner weiter unter Druck setzen und
    ihnen klarmachen: erstens, wir achten Euer Volk, zweitens wir achten
    Eure Geschichte; aber Eure Regierung trifft Entscheidungen, die Euer
    Land isolieren“, so der US-Präsident. „Und sie müssen nur ihr
    Programm zur Urananreicherung stoppen, dann gibt es einen Dialog und
    einen Weg voran. Das allerdings ist die Entscheidung der Regierung.“
    Bush betonte, seine kürzliche Warnung vor dem Risiko eines Dritten
    Weltkrieges sei „absolut ernst“ gemeint gewesen und stellte klar:
    „Ich habe gesagt, wenn man den Dritten Weltkrieg vermeiden will…

    Düsseldorf (ots) – Im Atomstreit mit dem Iran hat der höchste
    Repräsentant der Juden in Europa, Moshe Kantor, Bundeskanzlerin
    Angela Merkel aufgefordert, mehr öffentlichen Druck auf Teheran
    auszuüben.  Der „Rheinischen Post“ (Mittwochausgabe) sagte er: „Für
    den Iran ist der Gong zur letzten Runde ertönt.“ Aus Kantors Sicht
    seien Gesprächsmöglichkeite n über das Atomprogramm ausgereizt. Nun
    müsse gehandelt werden. Kantor erklärte außerdem, dass militärische
    Sanktionen folgen müssten, „wenn ökonomische nicht effektiv sind.“ So
    schreibe es das Prozedere der Vereinten Nationen vor. Er hoffe, dass
    es jedoch vorher gelänge, die nukleare Aufrüstung Irans durch ein
    gemeinsames Vorgehen Russlands, der USA und Europas zu stoppen.

    The Iranian government is currently intensifying its persecution of its largest religious minority, the Baha’is. This reveals something of the government’s nature, and also sheds light on the hotly debated question: Does the regime remain a revolutionary one, or has it become instead a „normal country,“ one that, despite its fervent rhetoric, aspires only to international acceptance and regional power?
    The regime has always persecuted the Baha’is, of whom 300,000 (out of some 5 million worldwide) still live in Iran. The Baha’i religion was founded in Iran in the mid-1800s, and the regime demonizes its adherents as heretics or apostates from Islam, who therefore should have no legal status or protection and who should be eradicated. However, its program in the 1980s of murder and imprisonment drew too much international attention and condemnation. So the government decided to pursue a strategy of slow strangulation.

  21. THE JERUSALEM POST – Mashaal: ME summit US ‚distraction‘ for war with Iran
    The leader of Hamas on Monday dismissed a US-sponsored Mideast peace conference planned for later this year, saying it was meant to distract the region as Washington prepared for an attack against Iran. He also warned Palestinian leaders against making concessions to Israel during the meeting.
    „Strategically, it (the US) is setting the stage and covering up for the upcoming American war in the region,“ Khaled Mashaal told a press conference at a forum of Palestinian intellectuals in Damascus, where the political chief of the Palestinian faction has his headquarters.
    „There are preparations for an aggression against Iran, and could include other parties – Syria, Lebanon and Hizbullah. Therefore, America is distracting us with a false game and is preparing itself for the real one,“ he said.
    He spoke as US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met Monday in Ramallah with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Mashaal’s rival, to prepare the ground for the conference. The meeting is expected to be held later this year in the US to try to restart Palestinian- Israeli peace negotiations.
