    Berlin – Angela Merkel (CDU) hat sich im Umgang mit Iran klar festgelegt: Diplomatie – und wenn das nicht hilft: verschärfte Sanktionen. Der „Berliner Zeitung“ sagte die Kanzlerin, sie sei sich sicher, dass sie dafür bei George W. Bush „offene Ohren“ finden werde. Ähnlich äußerte sich Merkel auch bei der Verleihung des Leo-Baeck-Preises 2007 gestern Abend in Berlin. In ihrer Dankesrede sagte Merkel, Deutschland setze sich „gemeinsam mit unseren Partnern für eine diplomatische Lösung ein. Dazu gehört auch, dass Deutschland, wenn Iran nicht einlenkt, entschieden zu weiteren und schärferen Sanktionen bereit ist.“

    October 22, 2007 – Of all the columns I’ve written for this newspaper over the last couple of years, none has elicited a more heated response than the one published in January 2006 about the Great War of 2007. Indeed, it still gets quoted back at me more than a year and a half later.
    The column was written in the style of a future historian looking back on a war that I imagined breaking out this year. My point was that if a major war were to break out in 2007, future historians would not have far to look to find its origins.

    Die Welt hat es verschlafen, aber YouTube war dabei: Präsident Bush machte letzten Monat eine Stippvisite in Iran. Dabei erging es ihm vor Studenten der Teheraner Universität nicht viel besser als Ahmadineschad jüngst an der Columbia University. Unter viel Gejohle wurde er gefragt, warum er iranische Atomwaffen fürchte, die Iraner aber keine Angst vor den amerikanischen haben sollten. Weil Amerika eine zivilisierte Nation sei, antwortete er. Obwohl das Land seit fünfzig, sechzig Jahren über Atomwaffen verfüge, habe es sie nur einmal eingesetzt. Gut, vielleicht zweimal. Wie auch immer, Atomwaffen sollten nur friedliebenden Nationen zur Verfügung stehen.

    Sheema Kalbasi     reports:   „8 Arab-Iranians are to be executed. Among them is Faleh Abdullah al-Mansouri, a Dutch national and UNHCR-registered refugee was deported to Iran by the Syrian authorities in May 2006. Al-Mansouri is currently being tortured in Section 209, a notorious prison run by the Ministry of Intelligence. He was sentenced to death while in exile and is likely to be executed in Iran. Three more are sentenced to life. One of them is Hamzeh Savari who was arrested at the age of eighteen and two of his brothers were executed last year.“

  13. MEMRIBLOG – Iranian Reformist Online Daily: Azeri Activists Arrested By Iranian Security Forces 
    An Azeri nationalist activist has told the online reformist daily Rooz that last month Iranian security forces arrested at least 20 Azeri political activists in Azerbaijan province.
    He said that the incidents were not reported to the media due to security forces‘ threats to the family lives and fates of their dear ones.
