    The arrest appears to be the latest jailing in an official clampdown to silence dissent and depict government critics as threats to the public.
    Maryam Hosseikhah, a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign Against Discriminatory Laws, was detained on November 18 and transferred to Tehran’s Evin prison.
    Authorities had told her one day earlier that she was being charged with „acting against Iran’s national security“ and publishing false information on the Women’s Cultural Center and the One Million Signatures Campaign websites.

    On October 25, the U.S. took a major step in ratcheting up the financial pressure against Tehran, unilaterally designating Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp, three State-owned banks, and a number of key officials for their involvement in the regime’s terrorist financing and WMD-related activities.  Nicholas Burns, State Department’s number three ranking official, called the moves the most significant action the U.S. has taken against Iran since the 1979 revolution.
    Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown immediately released a statement backing the U.S., noting that we endorse the U.S. administration‘ s efforts to apply further pressure on the Iranian regime.  While public support from the U.S.’s closest ally will undoubtedly help bolster the impact of the unilateral actions, Britain is in a unique position to do far more – primarily due to the central role that the City of London plays in the international financial system.

Indirekt involviert – aber nicht minder interessiert – sind Nationen wie Deutschland (So unlängst Jochen Clausnitzer, Nahost-Experte der Deutschen Industrie- und Handelskammer (DIHK) larmoyant: „Es liegt auf der Hand, dass dies nicht ohne Auswirkungen auf die Wirtschaft bleibt“ und, oh Graus – „Bei einem Wirtschaftsembargo würde für deutsche Unternehmen der wichtigste Markt im Mittleren und Nahen Osten wegbrechen“) Russland und China, die allesamt nur zu gerne auf weitere Sanktionen gegenüber dem Iran verzichten würden, weil die wirtschaftlichen Eckdaten im Handel mit dem Iran überaus heiter stimmen und Vorverträge schon ratifiziert wurden.

    Following recent threats against the Gulf countries by leading Iranian officials, several Saudi columnists have criticized the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries‘ passivity in the face of the danger posed by Iran.
