      German customs police are probing 50 of their country’s industrial firms for illegally supplying nuclear equipment to Iran. Coordinating this smuggling operation was a Berlin-based front company called Vero, headed by Dimitry Solotarev, an Armenian Jew. The deal amounts to $150 million, and that, says Potsdam’s public prosecutor, is ‚just the tip of the iceberg‘.

      BERLIN – In early 2005, German customs police raided a series of German firms involved in a clandestine relationship with Vero, a Berlin-based front company that was illegally supplying nulcear technology and equipment to Iran. The smuggling operation involved 50 German companies and used a nuclear reactor in the Russian city of Rostov to hide the fact that it was supplying equipment to Bushehr, a port city in southern Iran.
      Bushehr is the site of a feverish attempt by Russians and Iranians to rebuild Iran’s nuclear reactors. Iran’s Islamic government insists that these efforts are aimed at a non-military nuclear program, yet intelligence experts believe Bushehr is the gateway to an Iranian nuclear weapons arsenal. Vero’s now-defunct Berlin office served as an illegal conduit, operating throughout Germany, for Iran’s nuclear program. Germany bars the sale of nuclear equipment and „technological support“ to Iran and nine other nations, including Israel, without a special permit from the German Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). The Russian government, however, is not required to secure such a permit. Thus, German engineering firms can easily circumvent export regulations by designating a country that is not among the 10 listed in the export control law.

      German customs police have uncovered in recent years 50 German companies that sold Iran equipment to finish building its nuclear reactor at Bushehr.
      Coordinating this smuggling operation was a Berlin-based front company called Vero, headed by Dimitry Solotarev, an Armenian Jew with dual German and Russian citizenship. The value of the equipment transfered to Iran is estimated at $150 million. And that, Potsdam’s public prosecutor told Haaretz, is evidently „just the tip of the iceberg.“
      Iran claims that the Bushehr power plant it is building with the help of Russian engineers is intended for civilian purposes. However, Western intelligence agencies suspect Iran is planning to manufacture nuclear weapons there. Iran’s continued uranium enrichment to be used in the reactor was among the reasons the United Nations imposed economic sanctions.
      Iran is on Germany’s list of countries to which it is illegal to export nuclear know-how. Solotarev’s company disguised the sale to Iran by claiming it was supplying the equipment to a Russian nuclear reactor in Rostov.

      Die große Reichweite der bisher fortgeschrittensten iranischen Rakete sorgt in der westlichen Welt für große Beunruhigung, da sie nicht nur Israel, sondern auch weite Räume in Europa treffen könnte. Vor diesem Hintergrund hatten die USA auch die Planung eines Raketenabwehrsystem s in Polen und Tschechien betrieben, was zu einer Krise der amerikanisch- russischen Beziehungen geführt hatte. Russalnds OPräsident Putin hatte vor Kurzem Irans Achmadinedjad Hilfe bei der Entwicklung des ehrgeizigen Atomprojekts zugesagt.

Wirtschaftsminister Martin Bartenstein ist dagegen, dass durch die Nabucco-Pipeline Gas aus dem Iran fliesst: „Iranisches Gas als Input für Nabucco ist aus heutiger Sicht ein ,no go'“, sagte Bartenstein am Donnerstag am Rande eines EU-Ministerrats in Brüssel. „Es gibt für Nabucco die Unterstützung der USA. Die sollte man nicht leichtfertig aufs Spiel setzen“, ergänzte der Minister.

      Die gestern unterzeichnete Vereinbarung des russischen Gasmonopolisten Gazprom und der italienischen ENI über den Bau einer Gaspipeline („South Stream“) von Russland nach Südeuropa und Österreich sieht die OMV keine Bedrohung für das eigene „Nabucco“-Projekt. „Je mehr Gas über den Knoten Baumgarten fließen wird in Zukunft, umso mehr Marktteilnehmer werden angezogen, umso attraktiver wird der Standort Baumgarten“, zeigte sich Nabucco-Geschä ftsführer Reinhard Mitschek am Freitag im ORF-Mittagsjournal überzeugt.

    Mohamed ElBaradei also said his agency is still in the dark about possible military applications of what Iran says is a purely civilian nuclear program. However, he praised the Islamic Republic for providing long-sought answers about its nuclear past.

    Teheran expects the UN Security Council to close the file on its nuclear activities once it has answered all questions about its past atomic programs, a senior Iranian envoy said Thursday.
    Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, Iran’s chief delegate to the International Atomic Energy Agency, also accused Washington of „poisoning the atmosphere“ of an IAEA probe into its past with its attempts to impose new US Security Council sanctions.
    As the Council’s three permanent Western members, the US, France and Britain are at the forefront of a push for a third set of UN sanctions on Teheran for defying council demands to freeze uranium enrichment. However, Russia and China are opposed, leaving the likelihood of such measures unclear.
    „There is no legal and technological justification“ for continued Security Council involvement once the IAEA declares an end to its current probe, Soltanieh told reporters outside a Vienna meeting of the IAEA’s 35-nation board. „Security Council involvement has to stop – the sooner the better.“

    THE government faces a diplomatic row with America over disclosures that it has provided the Iranian regime with financial support worth about £290m while at the same time calling for sanctions.
    The money was offered by the Export Credits Guarantee Department (ECGD) to support British firms exporting to Iran, mainly to the country’s petrochemical industry.
    Many of the loans were being negotiated while British ministers were threatening sanctions against Iran for creating a nuclear enrichment facility to make atomic weapons.

    MEXICO CITY – Iran’s ambassador angrily demanded that a Moroccan artist withdraw from an art exhibit in Mexico a photograph he deems offensive to Islam, before it provokes a diplomatic crisis, exhibition organisers and media reports said.
    The photograph of a vagina covered by a Mosque-like dome „is considered an offence to Islam“ by Iran’s Ambassador to Mexico, Mohammad Hassan Ghadiri Abyaneh, and „he has addressed his protest to (the artist) Fouad Bellamine… asking him to withdraw it,“ an organiser of the Puebla Festival told AFP.
    „The two had an argument and the ambassador left in a huff,“ said the source, who asked not to be identified.
    The Proceso weekly said the ambassador has accused Bellamine of insulting Islam and has warned that „if the picture continues to be exhibited it could provoke a diplomatic crisis between the two countries.“

    Im Iran werden speziell Frauen von der staatlichen Polizei ausgebildet, um die Gleichheit von Mann und Frau zu bekämpfen. Die staatliche Diskriminierung der iranischen Frauen ist immens. Am 20. November erklärte Oberst Mohammad Husseini von der iranischen „Ordnungspolizei“ , dass ab sofort „Wächterinnen auf Sportplätzen und sogar auf Hochzeitsfeiern persönlich anwesend sein werden“. Rund 120 Wächterinnen würden gegenwärtig gezielt von der iranischen Polizei ausgebildet. Die Wächterinnen sollen präventive Aufgaben übernehmen, indem sie kontrollieren, ob Frauen und Männer die Kleidungsvorschrift en einhalten. Dies sei als ein Schutz der Bürger zu verstehen, damit sie keine weiteren Probleme bekommen. Das Ziel ist die Kontrolle der Privatsphäre der iranischen Frauen.
    Im Iran gibt es in der Tat eine Einheit, die sich „Polizei für moralische Sicherheit“ nennt. Nach einer Meldung der Teheraner Polizei vom 20. November seien seit Mitte November rund 4800 „Gesindel“ genannte Personen verhaftet worden. Mindestens 31 von ihnen seien zum Tode verurteilt worden. Und rund 1500 von ihnen seien zu langen Haftstrafen verurteilt worden.

Aufs wehleidige Jammern jedoch versteht man sich in der mit satten Exportzuwächsen heimischen Industrie am besten, wie unlängst Jochen Clausnitzer, Nahost-Experte der Deutschen Industrie- und Handelskammer (DIHK) unter Beweis stellte:

    Baqeri added that Iran’s nuclear capability was the property of the Islamic peoples, and that Sudan, like the rest of the world, was entitled to benefit from Iran’s experience.
