TEHRAN: Iran will boycott this year’s Paris book fair in protest because Israel is being invited as guest of honor, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said Saturday. Iran „has participated in previous fairs but this year, because of France’s decision, Iran is boycotting the fair,“ said Ali Alipour, an official at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. Iran does not recognize Israel and has sharpened its rhetoric against it during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The Islamic Republic is one of several Muslim and Arab countries and writers‘ associations that have said they will stay away from the March 14-19 Paris book fair.

    3. EJP – Paris book fair organizer regrets uproar around Israel
PARIS —The organizer of the international Paris book fair says he regrets the uproar around the fact that Israel has been invited this year as guest of honour.
Each year the fair puts the spotlight on one country. This year it is inviting 39 writers from Israel, including David Grossman, Amos Oz, A. B. Yehoshua and Aharon Appelfeld.
Israeli President Shimon Peres, who is to pays an official visit to France, will also  attend the fair’s opening.
„I’m not a government minister. My job is to bring literature to readers, not take sides in international politics,“ Serge Eyrolles, the event’s organizer, said.
„I’m very surprised by how political this is getting. It was not at all our goal, which was to invite Israeli literature, not the state of Israel.“
Several Arab and Muslim countries and writers‘ associations have said they will stay away from the March 14-19 Paris fair.
On Tuesday, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization urged its 50 member states to boycott the event.

  11. the Forward –  Long-silenced Iranian Jews find their political voice in America  By Rebecca Spence,
LOS ANGELES – When Beverly Hills‘ Iranian Jewish mayor, Jimmy Jamshid Delshad, ran for office in 2007, he faced an uphill battle. But contrary to conventional wisdom, his biggest challenge wasn’t persuading skeptical non-Iranians to rally behind him.
Instead, Delshad’s toughest fight was convincing his natural constituency – the city’s roughly 8,000 Iranian-American Jews – simply to register to vote, let alone vote for him.
„I worked on the Persian vote four times harder than I worked to get the American vote,“ Delshad said in a recent interview in his office inside the Beverly Hills City Hall. „They wouldn’t even register to vote. They would say, ‚I don’t want my name on anything.‘ They wanted to be under the radar.“

  13. MEMRI BLOG Friday Tehran Sermon: IAEA Report „Failure“ For U.S., Attests To Iran’s Righteousness

Tehran interim Friday prayer leader Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said in his sermon today that the International Atomic Energy Agency’s report on Iran’s nuclear program was „solid evidence“ of Iran’s righteousness and of the U.S.’s failure.
Ayatollah Jannati congratulated Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the Iranian people and officials on the country’s „nuclear victory“ following the IAEA report, and added that the report was proof that there are no ambiguities in Iran’s nuclear program, and that charges raised against the righteous Iranian nation were baseless.
He said that this nuclear victory would not have been possible easily without the courage of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or his success in securing the Supreme Leader’s consent.
Turning to Turkey’s lifting of the ban on the veil in Turkish public schools [sic], Ayatollah Jannati said the „humanitarian gesture,“ taken in light of Turkish nation’s ceaseless endeavors and resistance, showed that democracy and religion can easily go alongside each other.

The paper also warned that an Israeli operation in Lebanon or Gaza would be „suicide,“ and condemned Germany for joining those seeking to weaken Hizbullah.
