  11. politicalmavens – Israel faces a two front proxy war
    By Judith A. Klinghoffer (bio)
An Israeli operation against Gaza may be moral, but it will also mean a two front war in addition to the Iranian existential threat, Israeli intelligence warns:
„The main strategic threats are from Iran through its nuclear programme and the pivotal role it is playing as a leader of the radical axis in the Arab and Muslim world,“ the official quoted the annual report as saying. The Islamic republic, whose President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly called for Israel to be wiped off the map, is also increasing its cooperation with other foes Syria, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Palestinian militant groups, he said.

  12. THE JERUSALEM POST – Int’l support for Iran sanctions down
Worldwide support for severe international action against Iran has dropped over the past year and a half, according to a new study by the BBC. According to the results of the study, there has been a marked decline in the number of people who favor sanctions or military action against the Islamic Republic over its unwillingness to heed the UN and the international community and stop enriching uranium.
Most of the 30,000 people who were polled said that Iran should be allowed to produce nuclear fuel under the condition that it does so under UN supervision. Support for outright military action against Teheran has declined in over half of the countries that participated in the study, including in countries that in the past had shown support for such an action.
In 14 of 21 countries polled in a similar study in 2006, over 35 percent supported harsh action against Iran. In 2008, the number of countries sporting over 35 percent support for military action dropped to nine.
Over 40 percent of those polled in Middle Eastern countries favored the diplomatic track as the best way to solve the conflict.

    nytimes Attack Iran, With Words
    By REUEL MARC GERECHT
    Prague
FOR those who believe — as I do — that the clerics who rule Iran must never have an arsenal of nuclear weapons, the United States‘ course of action ought to be clear: The Bush administration should advocate direct, unconditional talks between Washington and Tehran. Strategically, politically and morally, such meetings will help us think more clearly. Foreign-policy hawks ought to see such discussions as essential preparation for possible military strikes against clerical Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The consensus among Iran’s ruling elite is that a hard-line stance on the nuclear question has paid off: uranium enrichment, the most industrially demanding part of developing nuclear weapons, has rapidly advanced. And, unexpectedly and gratifyingly, the Bush administration’s National Intelligence Estimate of November, which found that „in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program,“ damaged Western resolve to invoke economy-crippling sanctions, let alone the American threat to use force against Tehran.

  20. ACHGUT – Yossi Klein Halevi: The Iranian-Israeli War
The Palestinian struggle is no longer about creating an independent state. It is about being a front-line participant in the Iranian-led jihad to destroy Israel, evolving from a nationalist to a religious war. The thousands of celebrants in Gaza who, following the yeshiva massacre, offered prayers of thanksgiving in the mosques and distributed candies to passersby weren’t only indulging in feelings of revenge for Israel’s recent military incursion but heralding the coming jihadist victory over the enemies of God. A real solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict can only be reached by dealing with its primary instigator: Iran.

According to the Iranian weekly Sobh-e Sadeq, the mouthpiece of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei circulated among the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), U.N. Security Council Resolution 1803 includes little that is new, and therefore „China’s and Russia’s support for the resolution is understandable.“

The weekly stated that this points out the U.S.’s inability to enforce significant sanctions, and that all it can do is send a warning to Iran.

It added that restricting the movement of a few Iranian officials outside Iran will have no effect on Iran’s nuclear project.
