Der heute unterschriebene Vertrag mit einer Laufzeit von 25 Jahren sieht vor, dass Iran ab 2011 jährlich 5,5 Milliarden Kubikmeter Erdgas an die EGL liefert. Erste Lieferungen können aber schon 2009 beginnen. Angeblich hat der Vertrag eine Höhe von 18 Milliarden Euro. Zudem wurde vereinbart, zusammen mit der norwegischen StatoilHydro die Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) zu bauen, mit der das Gas ab 2012 nach Italien fließen soll. Damit soll, wie es beim Konzern heißt, die „langfristige Versorgungssicherheit in Italien und der Schweiz sowie eine Diversifizierung der Versorgung Europas mit Erdgas“ garantiert werden.

    The Chicago Tribune reported that Muqtada al-Sadr addressed on Friday „in an unusually personal letter to his followers“ that he is taking a break, seemingly hanging up ballots an bullets. It is of course difficult for a Baghdad slumlord to address his ‘masses‘ in person. It’s a long walk from Tehran.
    „So far I did not succeed either to liberate Iraq or make it an Islamic society — whether because of my own inability or the inability of society, only God knows,“ Sadr wrote.
    „The continued presence of the occupiers, on the one hand, and the disobedience of many on the other, pushed me to isolate myself in protest. I gave society a big proportion of my life. Even my body became weaker, I got more sicknesses.“
    What Muqtada did not say was that, having outlived his usefulness, his Iranian masters have determined that he needs to stay out of the way. Sadr is apparently not the only one ‘sick‘ and ‘tired.‘

    The British government announced Thursday that it was ending efforts to deport Mehdi Kazemi, a 19-year-old Iranian who has been studying in Britain – a move that should be applauded by human rights activists everywhere. Had he been forced to return to Iran, Kazemi would almost certainly have been executed there. Roger Roberts, one of eight members of the House of Lords who petitioned British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to allow Kazemi to stay in Britain, declared: „There is no doubt that he will be persecuted and possibly face state-sanctioned murder if he is forced to return.“
    This is because, while in Britain in 2005, Kazemi learned that his male lover back in Iran had been hanged for the crime of sodomy. He applied for asylum in Britain, was turned down, went to the Netherlands and applied for asylum again, and was turned down again.
    The Dutch denied Kazemi’s application because European Union regulations allow someone to apply for asylum in only one EU country. But why did Britain initially turn him down also? Because according to British authorities, Iran does not persecute homosexuals.

    On the eve of the new year in Iran, the daily Kayhan, which is close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, stated in an editorial that there had been no strategic change in Iran’s nuclear dossier in the past year.
    The paper said that the third U.N. Security Council sanctions resolution was the last concrete action by U.S. President Bush, and that now everyone was waiting for the next president.
    The paper added that the resignation of commander of the U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan Adm. William Fallon, who it says acknowledged that it was not possible to attack Iran, attests to the fact that Iran is very close to being a nuclear country.
