Washington – Im Persischen Golf hat ein von der US-Marine gechartertes Schiff Warnschüsse auf zwei mutmaßliche iranische Schnellboote abgegeben. Wie ein Vertreter des US-Verteidigungsministeriums am Freitag in Washington weiter mitteilte, ereignete sich der Zwischenfall bereits am Donnerstag in der Früh.
Die gesichteten Boote näherten sich den Angaben zufolge dem Schiff, das von der US-Marine genutzt wird. Der Zwischenfall habe sich mehrere Dutzend Meilen vor der iranischen Küste abgespielt, hieß es weiter. Die Schnellboote seien dann abgedreht. Navy spokeswoman confirms cargo ship traveling in international waters in central Gulf fired several warning shots at unresponsive Iranian boats
A cargo ship contracted by the US Military Sealift Command fired „a few bursts“ of warning shots in the Gulf at small boats believed to be Iranian, US defense officials said on Friday.
„They were able to avoid a serious incident by following the procedures that we use,“ said Commander Lydia Robertson, a spokeswoman for the US Navy’s Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet.
The Westward Venture, a cargo ship chartered by the US Department of Defense, was traveling north in international waters in the central Gulf at around 8 am local time on Thursday when the incident took place, Robertson said.
The ship was approached by two unidentified small boats and its crew issued „standard queries“ to the vessels by radio but did not receive a response, she said. The ship then fired a flare, which also produced no response, she said.
The boats continued to approach the cargo ship and its onboard security team fired „a few bursts“ of machine gun and rifle warning shots, Robertson said. „The small boats left the area a short time later,“ Robertson by telephone.
A US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the boats were believed to be Iranian.
Shortly after the incident, the ship received a radio query from a ship identifying itself as an Iranian coast guard vessel, Robertson said.
„It is not clear if this was one of the small boats or a separate boat,“ she said. She said the query from the vessel was conducted correctly.
The United States said in January Iranian boats threatened its warships on Jan. 6 along a vital route for crude oil shipments.

Wie staatliche Medien am Samstag berichteten, entfielen nach vorläufigem Auszählungsstand zwölf Sitze auf die Anhänger von Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinejad, sieben auf seine konservativen Kritiker, 12 auf die Reformisten und 25 auf unabhängige Kandidaten.

Dort warb sie auch dafür, die Wiederstandskämpfer der Volksmudschaheddin von der EU-Terrorliste zu streichen.
In einer religiösen Diktatur hätten freie Wahlen keinen Sinn. Hamman, ein Minister des Königs Xerxes, plante die Vernichtung der iranischen Juden. Königin Ester setzte sich für die Rettung der Juden ein und ein Massenmord an ihnen wurde verhindert. Purim werde wie ein Karnevalsfest gefeiert. Während eines solchen Festes müssen die Israelis heute aber für höchste Sicherheitsmaßnahmen sorgen, weil sie auch während des Karnevals von terroristischen Anschlägen und von Selbstmordattentätern bedroht werden.
Amir bekommt regelmäßig Anrufe aus dem Iran. Immer wieder berichten Iraner aus ihrem Land, dass sie sich eine andere politische Herrschaft wünschen, eine Regierung, die eine friedliche Politik mit den Nachbarn Irans verfolge, schreibt Amir. Er berichtet, einmal habe ihn ein Anrufer gefragt, wo denn das Grabmal Daniels liege, der auch den Muslimen heilig sei. Tatsächlich liegt es in der iranischen Stadt Schusch.

Siemens has with „high likelihood“ delivered sophisticated data surveillance systems to Iran, Erich Moechel, an Austrian investigative journalist, disclosed on April 7, 2008. „Monitoring Centers,“ used to track mobile and land-line phone conversations, had been sent to Iran. These systems could enable the Iranian intelligence service to document conversations between Israel and Iran and „build a communication profile.“ Moechel, a specialist in the field of data protection and surveillance, said that he was highly certain that the Iranian regime had purchased German-designed „Intelligence Platform“ systems, which allow the Iranian secret service to monitor „financial transactions and traffic and airplane movements.“ [3]
Moechel wrote in his article that the integrated intelligence devices were used against persecuted minority groups and political dissidents in Iran. He cited German and Austrian privacy experts who noted that these types of machines would not be lawful within the EU. [4]

Obwohl selbst iranische Regimekritiker an der Wirksamkeit von Wirtschaftssanktionen zweifeln (1), verschärften die USA unilateral die Finanzsanktionen gegen Iran. Internationale Banken, die mit iranischen Banken Geschäfte machen, laufen von nun an Gefahr, auf einer Schwarzen Liste von Unterstützern des Terrorismus zu landen und selbst Objekt von Sanktionen zu werden. Bei einer weltweiten Akzeptanz könnten diese Sanktionen Iran hart treffen, es mag aber bezweifelt werden, ob China und einige europäische Staaten sich an diese Sanktionen halten, die allen voran ihnen selbst schaden.
Seit der Revolution im Jahre 1979 wird Iran von den USA sanktioniert und boykottiert. Im langjährigen Streit zwischen den USA und Iran, der sich momentan vor allem auf Irans Atomprogramm fokussiert, werden Wirtschaftssanktionen von den USA als Mittel der Wahl propagiert. It’s in French, though there’s a dubbed version, too. Satrapi adapted it from her four-part graphic novel, itself drawn from her own life story. She has achieved a remarkable synthesis between her illustrative style – simple, attractive and instantly accessible black-and-white panels, a little like woodcuts – and the moving image.

The consensus among Israel’s political and military leaders as we near our 60th anniversary of independence is that modern Israel has never been as threatened as it is today. Given the wars of survival it had to fight in its first quarter century, that’s a profoundly troubling assessment.
Although Syria has all of Israel within missile range, Hizbullah has rearmed and the quantities of weaponry flowing into Gaza risk turning a major irritant into a grave concern, the key focus of potentially devastating confrontation is the Islamist regime in Iran – itself, of course, the key state player behind Hizbullah and the Gaza Islamic radicals.
One might be tempted to disregard the annihilatory rhetoric from Teheran were it not accompanied by the relentless drive for a nuclear bomb. One might seek to downplay the nuclear drive were it not for the rhetoric. But the combination of Iran’s incitement to genocide and its determined acquisition of the tools to carry out the deed has created a consensus in leadership here – not absolute unanimity, but certainly a strong majority view – that Israel’s future well-being necessitates the thwarting of this Iranian regime’s nuclear aspirations.
The widespread belief among Israel’s leaders as recently as Israel’s 59th birthday was that, one way or another, the Bush administration would halt the mullahs – either by galvanizing concerted, biting international sanctions or by force. Some of Israel’s most highly placed officials, only too aware of the negligible impact sanctions were having on Iran, indeed, believed until a few months ago that the US might be resorting to military action right about now – late spring to early summer of 2008.
That the sanctions are not hurting Iran is plainly still the case, notably with oil prices at $100 a barrel compared to $25 just a few short years ago. Every small rise in oil prices yields hundreds of millions of dollars for the Iranian exchequer. Thus the quadrupling in price massively outweighs the limited impact of international sanctions – sanctions that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain described in his interview with The Jerusalem Post last month as „remarkable“ in their weakness.
But the notion of a Bush presidency’s resort to military action was shattered by the US National Intelligence Estimate late last year that highlighted an asserted halt in the Iranian nuclear weapons program dating back to 2003.

In his Friday sermon, Tehran Interim Friday Prayer leader Ayatollah Mohammad Emami-Kashani responded to U.S. senator and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton’s recent comment on eliminating Iran from the world map if she is elected.
He told thousands of worshipers at the central campus of Tehran University, „When that lady says that if Iran attacked Israel using its nuclear weapons, America would eliminate the country from the world map, she knows all too well that Iran does not possess, and will never posses, such weapons, and is not a type to launch such attacks – so this is merely a part of their [sic] psychological war against us.“
He also pointed out to his audience that „only yesterday, there was a debate between two presidential election groups in America, [and] one side argued that it preferred to hold direct talks with Iran.“ This, he said, was „proof of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s strength, stability, and national sovereignty.“
Kashani added that the West „never ceases its campaign against us [Iran and the Muslims] or against our Prophet because they notice how victorious and rapidly advancing Islam is in today’s world… The world nations realize that when a government like America that has been engaged in terrorist training activities for a long time, and is the major supporter of the world’s greatest state sponsor of terrorism, like Israel, claims to be launching a campaign against international terrorism, those enemies of mankind are definitely telling a big lie.“
He stressed that Iran’s enemies were counting on low voter turnout for today’s run-off Majlis elections.

At a ceremony marking his leaving office, resigning Iranian treasury minister Daoud Danesh J’afari joined in the criticism of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad economic performance.
He said that Ahmadinejad was not setting policy according to economic standards.

During a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mu’alem, who is currently visiting Iran, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned that anyone joining the Americans would be temporary, like them: „The truth is that the Americans are temporary [in the region], and anyone who is with them will leave as well.“
Yesterday, April 23, Ahmadinejad stated in a speech in Hamadan that the U.S. was on the brink of collapse and of losing its hegemony in the world due to its economic problems.

Iranian international relations researcher Darisuh Safarnejad has stated that Moscow’s moves arouse a profound lack of confidence in it on Iran’s part.
He said that Russia is aspiring to leave Iran under pressure by the international community, but not to permit a military attack on it. Thus, he said, Iran must prevent Russia from playing the Iranian nuclear card for its own purposes.
