    1. WORLD JEWISH CONGRESS – PRESS RELEASE – 12 May 2008 – World Jewish Congress president Lauder wants Austrian energy firm OMV to suspend Iran deals – Ronald S. Lauder: „Austria has a moral responsibility to fight the Iranian threat“
      NEW YORK – Ronald S. Lauder, the President of the World Jewish Congress
      (WJC) and a former United States Ambassador to Austria, has asked shareholders of the Austrian energy giant OMV to urge the company’s management to suspend multi-billion-dollar deals with Iran until Tehran fully complies with United Nations demands regarding its nuclear program.
      „Currently, the Iranian regime is openly defiant of the UN sanctions imposed against it. It threatens Israel with annihilation and sponsors terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. Therefore, it is wrong for any Western company to sign business deals of such a magnitude with the regime in Tehran,“ the WJC President pointed out.
      Lauder added: „Because of its recent history, Austria has a moral responsibility to fight the Iranian threat. As the biggest shareholder, the government should bring its influence to bear on OMV. Like in Switzerland, politicians err if they believe that the economic interests are more important than the threat posed by Iran.“ The Austrian government still controls over 30 per cent of the shares in OMV, the largest listed company in Austria and Central Europe’s leading oil and gas corporation. Referring to Israel’s 60th anniversary, Lauder said: „OMV shareholders will meet for the Annual General Meeting in Vienna on 14 May, on the day sixty years after the independence of Israel, a country that Iran’s President Ahmadinejad wants to wipe off the map. Let’s hope that OMV decides to pursue alternative options instead of giving Iran the international recognition they so desperately seek.“
      OMV has a number of energy interests in Iran. In 2007, the company signed an agreement with Iran’s state-owned natural gas company to develop the South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf, following a similar agreement in 2001.
      In April, OMV signed a deal with Iran to build a plant for liquefied natural gas, reportedly Iran’s biggest such contract with Europe valued at up to US $30 billion over 25 years. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and US President George W. Bush recently announced a push for the inclusion of liquefied natural gas in the list of UN sanctions should Iran continue to ignore the demands by the UN Security Council.

      Austrian company OMV should cancel 22 billion Euro deal with Iran BBE President Reinold Simon: „Iranian nuclear bomb has to be prevented by any means necessary“
      Wednesday May 14 the OMV shareholders‘ meeting will be taking place in Vienna. During this meeting the topic of a planned 22 billion Euro deal with Iran will be discussed.
      We protest the deal between Iran and Austrian conglomerate OMV partly owned by the Austrian government which is its largest shareholder. Under this agreement, OMV would develop Iranian gas and oil fields along the Persian Gulf. Its investments in Iran’s energy sector would significantly increase the finances Tehran has available for its nuclear program.
      Dealing with a regime that threatens to wipe Israel off the map, that denies the Holocaust and that works to develop a nuclear bomb is completely unacceptable. We therefore call on OMV to cancel its deal with Iran. Moreover, we demand that the Austrian government instead impose effective and comprehensive sanctions to isolate the Iranian regime politically and economically. The Iranian nuclear bomb has to be prevented by any means necessary.

      „It is wrong for any Western company to sign business deals of such a magnitude with the regime in Tehran,“ World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald S. Lauder said in a statement Monday.

      Ist Österreich im Begriff, potenzieller Mittäter des nächsten Holocaust zu werden? Ein jüngst in der renommierten und einflussreichen israelischen Tageszeitung „Jerusalem Post“ publizierter Kommentar unter dem Titel „Österreich – der iranische Brückenkopf in Europa“ legt diesen Schluss nahe. Denn indem die teilverstaatlichte OMV („Österreicher Mit Verantwortung“) im Begriff sei, 22 Milliarden Euro in die Ausbeutung iranischer Erdgasfelder zu investieren, missachte die Regierung in Wien die wichtigste Konsequenz aus dem Holocaust, argumentiert der Kommentar: nämlich das Existenzrecht Israels.
      Tatsächlich erklärt der iranische Staatspräsident ja bei jeder Gelegenheit, dass er inbrünstig auf die Auslöschung des Judenstaates hoffe. Und dass dieses düstere iranische Regime vom geplanten Deal mit der OMV erheblich profitieren würde, ist evident.

    Berlin (ots) – Die vermutliche atomare Aufrüstung des Irans ist nicht nur eine akute Gefahr für den Staat Israel, sondern auch für die arabischen Nachbarn des Landes. Diese Ansicht vertrat der langjährige Botschafter Israels in der Bundesrepublik, Avi Primor, in einem Interview mit dem „Tagesspiegel am Sonntag“. Der Iran stehe für die Kräfte, die sich noch immer nicht mit der Existenz des Staates Israel abgefunden hätten und die diesen vernichten wollten. Die Unterstützung Irans für die Hamas und die Hisbollah bereite der israelischen Regierung große Sorgen. Dass sich zunehmend auch arabische Länder wie Saudi-Arabien und die Golfstaaten um einen Interessenausgleich mit Israel bemühten, geschehe vor allem, um dann die ganze Kraft auf die Verteidigung ihrer Staaten gegen die Bedrohung aus dem Iran konzentrieren zu können.

      Mit sechzig ist Israel ein trauriger Ort. Traurig trotz seines Wohlstands und des überall greifbaren materiellen Erfolgs. Auf dem Land, die Siedlungen des Westjordanlandes eingeschlossen, schießen neue Wohnungsblocks und Häuser aus dem Boden (und verschandeln die Landschaft und verschmutzen die Luft). In großer Zahl verbringen Israelis ihren Urlaub in Europa und im Westen (obwohl ein Fünftel der Bevölkerung, zumeist ultra-ortodoxe Juden und Araber, in Umständen leben, die die Regierung als Armut definiert). Immer öfter sieht man neue Autos auf den Straßen. Und die Bildungsmöglichkeiten sind vielfältig und bahnen einer sozialen Mobilität den Weg – mehr als die Hälfte der jungen Leute besucht eine Universität oder eines der privaten Colleges, die immer häufiger werden.
      An politischen und wirtschaftlichen Maßstäben gemessen, ist Israel eine phänomenale Erfolgsgeschichte. Es ist einer der wenigen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gegründeten Staaten, der eine funktionierende, pulsierende Demokratie geblieben ist. Die Bevölkerung, die arabische eingeschlossen (1,3 Millionen von sieben Millionen), genießt volle Bürgerrechte und die Vorzüge eines Rechtssystems, das so frei und ehrlich ist wie nur irgendeines im Westen, sowie die eines Sozialsystems, das das Überleben der Ärmsten sichert. Gemessen an seiner Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und kulturellen Kreativität, ist Israel ein Kraftwerk. Hightech-Errungenschaften, eine Handvoll Nobelpreise und eine Heerschar international erfolgreicher Autoren beweisen es.

    Wien. Ganze neun Monate wurde ein iranischer Botschafter für Österreich gesucht: Mit der Ernennung des moderaten Ökonomen Ebrahim Sheibany wurde diese Lücke gefüllt. Der Kompromisskandidat zählt sicher nicht – wie Irans Vertreter in Rom – zu den Hardlinern rund um Präsident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Das Außenministerium in Teheran sieht Wien mit Sitz der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde (IAEO) als Brücke zu Europa und wertet den Standort nun mit Sheibanys Berufung auf.     The Iranian website Tabnak and Iran’s PressTV television channel have said that because Al-Arabiya TV is close to Saudi Arabia, it is promoting anti-Iranian propaganda, working to advance civil war in Lebanon, and depicting the events there as a struggle between Sunnis and Shi’ites.
    Tabnak stated that Al-Arabiya’s commentary is taking the line of depicting the Lebanon events as an armed coup in which Iran is the main behind-the-scenes player.
    It also said that following Al-Arabiya’s inciting broadcasts, the unrest has spread to Tripoli and Sidon.

  22. MEMRI IRANIAN MEDIA BLOG – „Kayhan“ To Iraqis: Rebel Against U.S.
    In an editorial referring to the expected signing, in another three months, of an Iraq-U.S. agreement, the Iranian daily Jomhouri-e Eslami called on the Iraqi people to expel the American forces from Iraq via a „popular rebellion.“
    The paper said that the agreement now being reached made Iraq a colony of the U.S., and revealed the U.S.’s intentions to remain in Iraq in order „to accomplish its imperialistic goals in the region.“

  24. MEMRI IRANIAN MEDIA BLOG – Iran: Israel „A Dying Fish… A Stinking Corpse“ 
    In a speech at an MPs‘ conference, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared that Israel was „like a dying fish reaching the end of its life… a stinking corpse about to sink… Anyone who thinks that its 60th anniversary festivities will revive it is badly mistaken, and those participating in the festivities will go down in history as criminal Zionists.“
    Ahmadinejad also warned that the governments of the region that are helping Israel „will be burned in the fire of the rage of the nations.“
    He added that if anyone imagined that by means of sowing division between Iran and its allies he could change the global balances, then they were badly mistaken, because the nations would bury him.
    In an editorial, the Iranian daily Jomhouri-e Eslami stated that despite its 60th anniversary celebrations, Israel was collapsing, and would not live long. The paper said that the Islamic resistance organizations in Palestine and the rest of the Islamic fighters „would soon destroy the spider regime of Israel.“

  25. MEMRI IRANIAN MEDIA BLOG – Ahmadinejad: The Hidden Imam Runs The World 
    In a speech to clerics in Mashad last month, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that the appearance of the Hidden Imam, the Shi’ite messiah, was imminent, and declared, „The time has come for us to carry out our global duty… With God’s help, Iran will become the center of [global] leadership… The Hidden Imam runs the affairs of Iran and of the rest of the countries of the world… and he is preventing the U.S. from taking over Iraq’s oil and looting it.“
    The speech was broadcast on Iranian TV on May 5.
    Alam-al-Hoda, Friday prayer leader in the city of Mashhad, reinforced Ahmadinejad’s statements, saying that nuclear scientists had told him that they had successfully overcome the technical difficulties of developing Iran’s nuclear program by turning to the Hidden Imam.
    In response, Assembly of Experts member and senior Iranian cleric Ayatollah Madavi-Kani said that according to Shi’ite belief, the Hidden Imam, during the time he is hidden, is invisible and conveys no messages to anyone. He added that Ahmadinejad’s statements were harming the image of the Hidden Imam, because Iran’s economic problems were being attributed to him.

    Russia will join the countries imposing economic sanctions against Iran, said Interfax News Agency, quoting a decree issued by new Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
    It was unclear from the Interfax report which sanctions Russia is to join.
    A Kremlin spokesman refused to comment.

    IRGC Joint Chiefs commander Mohammad Hejazi has said that the IRGC soldiers „will decapitate anyone who dares to attack Iran.“
    He added that Iran’s enemies were planning a limited confrontation but that Iran would be the one to determine the scope and duration of the conflict.
