What Iranian Leaders Really Say about Doing Away with Israel: A Refutation of the Campaign to Excuse Ahmadinejad’s Incitement to Genocide – Joshua Teitelbaum
    • Over the past several years, Iranian leaders – most prominently, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – have made numerous statements calling for the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people. While certain experts have interpreted these statements to be simple expressions of dissatisfaction with the current Israeli government and its policies, in reality, the intent behind Ahmadinejad’s language and that of others is clear.

    • What emerges from a comprehensive analysis of what Ahmadinejad actually said – and how it has been interpreted in Iran – is that the Iranian president was not just calling for „regime change“ in Jerusalem, but rather the actual physical destruction of the State of Israel. When Ahmadinejad punctuates his speech with „Death to Israel“ (marg bar Esraiil), this is no longer open to various interpretations.
    • A common motif of genocide incitement is the dehumanization of the target population. The Nazi weekly Der Stürmer portrayed Jews as parasites and locusts. Ahmadinejad said in a speech on October 26, 2005: „In the Middle East, they [the global powers] have created a black and filthy microbe called the Zionist regime.“
    • Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who succeeded Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989, has made statements about Israel similar to Ahmadinejad. On December 15, 2000, he declared on Iranian TV: „Iran’s position, which was first expressed by the Imam [Khomeini] and stated several times by those responsible, is that the cancerous tumor called Israel must be uprooted from the region.“
    • Michael Axworthy, who served as the Head of the Iran Section of Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, notes that when the slogan „Israel must be wiped off the map“ appeared „draped over missiles in military parades, that meaning was pretty clear.“
    • There is an ample legal basis for the prosecution of Ahmadinejad in the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court for direct and public incitement to commit genocide and crimes against humanity.

  2. SPIEGEL ONLINE ‚MISSION DOABLE‘: Israeli Ministers Mull Plans for Military Strike against Iran – Ralf Beste, Cordula Meyer and Christoph Schult
The Israeli government no longer believes that sanctions can prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons. A broad consensus in favor of a military strike against Tehran’s nuclear facilities — without the Americans, if necessary — is beginning to take shape.
Dani Yatom, a member of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, was invited to attend a NATO conference in Brussels last year. While reviewing the agenda, Yatom, a retired major general, was surprised to see that the meeting was titled „The Iranian Challenge“ and not „The Iranian Threat.“
When a speaker with a French accent mentioned that a US military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities would be the most dangerous scenario of all, Yatom said, politely but firmly: „Sir, you are wrong. The worst scenario would be if Iran acquired an atom bomb.“

LONDON — Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced Monday that Britain and the European Union would freeze the overseas assets of Iran’s largest commercial bank, joining the United States in intensifying financial pressure against Iran over its refusal to address international concern over its nuclear activities.
Mr. Brown, appearing with President Bush after discussions here, also pledged to send additional troops to Afghanistan, and indicated that he would not bend to political pressure at home to withdraw British forces in southern Iraq more quickly.

In an editorial, the Tabnak website stated that the sanctions on Iran were preventing it from obtaining nuclear technology on a wide-scale basis due to its dependence on international companies.
The paper wondered whether, in the wake of the economic damage caused by the sanctions on Iran, Iran’s nuclear dossier would not change from a means of securing its national interests into an aim in itself.
It also stated that Russia would make political use of its energy sources and therefore that there was no guarantee that it would supply Iran with nuclear fuel at a fair price for the Bushehr reactor, if it is activated, and for other nuclear facilities.

  16. MEMRI IRANIAN MEDIA BLOG Anti-Government, Anti-Regime Graffiti In Iran
Spray-painted slogans have been found in several Iranian cities, including Rasht, Tabriz, and Mashhad, against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Iranian regime.
Among the slogans were „Iran’s Oil Revenues – On the Dinner Tables of the Lebanese“; „Ahmadinejad – Responsible For The High Cost Of Living And Inflation“; „Death to the Rule of the Jurisprudent“; „Islamic Republic = Executions, Jail, Torture“; and „Oil At $160 a Barrel – 40% Increase In Inflation.“
The graffitists also called on the public to participate in demonstrations next week to protest against inflation.
Criticism of the government’s economic management was voiced recently also by Iranian Expediency Council Chairman Hashemi Rafsanjani, Ahmadinejad’s political rival, in a speech in the Majlis, where he spoke of the Ahmadinejad government’s „pointless and unprofessional“ use of the country’s oil revenues.
