    Einzelne EU-Länder schrecken aus Sorge um den Handel vor schärferen Maßnahmen zurück.
    BRÜSSEL (pö). Soll der Iran mit noch schärferen internationalen Maßnahmen daran gehindert werden, sein Atomprogramm fortzusetzen? Diese Frage spaltet seit Monaten die Staatengemeinschaft und nun auch die Europäische Union. Gestern, Mittwoch, verhandelten die EU-Botschafter in Brüssel über Details, eine Entscheidung soll in wenigen Wochen fallen.
    Österreich zählt laut „Presse“-Informationen zu den Ländern, die schärferen EU-Sanktionen kritisch gegenüberstehen: Der Staat sei „eher nicht dafür, das wäre kontraproduktiv“, hieß es in Brüsseler Kreisen. Der Iran solle „nicht isoliert werden“, so wird dies begründet. Österreich sei „gegen eine extensive Interpretation“ der UN-Resolution. Diese wird auf EU-Ebene erst umgesetzt. Details über das Einfrieren von Finanz- oder Warenströmen müssen noch näher definiert werden.

  3. Wiener Zeitung – Gesprächsrunde zwischen Iran und IAEO
     Teheran/Wien. Die Chefs der iranischen Atomenergie-Organisation AEOI und der Internationalen Atomenergie-Organisation IAEO haben sich am Donnerstag in Wien getroffen. In dem Gespräch mit IAEO-Generaldirektor Mohammed ElBaradei sei es um die Verhandlungen der letzten Monate und die Kooperation mit der IAEO gegangen, sagte AEOI-Chef Gholamreza Aghazadeh in einer anschließenden Pressekonferenz.
    Der Westen verdächtigt den Iran, mit Hilfe seines umstrittenen Urananreicherungsprogramms eine Atombombe bauen zu wollen. Teheran hingegen bestreitet das vehement und bekräftigt immer wieder, die Atomenergie nur für zivile Zwecke nutzen zu wollen.

      Irans Präsident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hat am Mittwoch verkündet, dass die Islamische Republik ihr Atomprogramm in keiner Weise einschränken wolle.

      In den Verhandlungen um Irans Atomprogramm weicht Mahmud Ahmadinedschad keinen Schritt von seiner Position zurück. Über die Aufforderung seitens der Vereinigten Staaten, sich zwischen Kooperation und Konfrontation zu entscheiden, sieht Irans Präsident hinweg.
      Im Atomstreit hält Irans Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinedschad auch nach dem jüngsten Kompromissangebot des Westens an seiner Position fest. „Ich erkläre hiermit, dass es niemanden gibt, der auf seine nuklearen Rechte verzichtet“, sagte er am Mittwoch in einer Rede in der Stadt Jasudsch im Westiran. Die „Weltmächte“ müssten das akzeptieren. Ein positives Zeichen nannte Ahmadinedschad, dass an den Atomverhandlungen am Wochenende in Genf die Nummer drei im US-Aussenministerium, William Burns, teilgenommen hatte.

    Teheran (Reuters) – Irans Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinedschad hat ungewöhnlich versöhnliche Töne im Atomstreit angeschlagen, zugleich aber ein Einlenken gegenüber den Forderungen des Westens ausgeschlossen. 
    In einer Rede am Mittwoch in der südiranischen Stadt Jasudsch lobte er die erstmalige Teilnahme eines hochrangigen US-Vertreters an den Atomgesprächen mit den UN-Vetomächten und Deutschland sowie das respektvolle Auftreten des Diplomaten. An die Adresse des Westens fügte er jedoch hinzu: „Ich rate Ihnen, diesen positiven Schritt nicht zu verderben, indem Sie die Sprache der Kolonialzeit verwenden und uns drangsalieren.“

      One thing the presumed president will have to deal with in Europe is an uneven, and sometimes reckless, attitude toward Iran.  On the one hand, Europe has joined with America in opposing the Iranian nuclear program, but, on the other, has shown little stomach for actually doing anything about it.  One reason, of course, is money.  Trade between Europe and Iran is major, and Europeans have never been known to look down on the word „profit,“ except in writing term papers in universities.
      There is a wonderful organization operating out of Vienna called Stop the Bomb, devoted to exposing and opposing the mullah regime in Iran.  Its website is here.  I’ve met one of its key people, Simone Dinah Hartmann, who acts as the group’s spokesperson.  She’s an impressive and vigorous person, totally devoted to this cause.

    Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, on his first official visit to Washington, warned Thursday that Israel would not rule out any course of action regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Israel Radio reported.
    „We are all united in the view that Iran needs to be prevented from obtaining a nuclear weapon. There is no doubt that diplomatic activity and sanctions are preferable, but we all understand – we and the Americans – that we need to prepare all options,“ the radio report quoted Ashkenazi stating after meeting with senior United States officials.

  8. MEMRI BLOG – Iranian Human Rights Group Protests Bill Setting Death Penalty For Blogs, Websites „Promoting Corruption And Apostasy“
     
    Iran’s Defenders of Human Rights Center released a statement on July 19 protesting a bill seeking to toughen punishment for crimes ‎deemed to „disrupt public security“ and to „intensify the scheme of punishment for disrupting the mental security of society.“
    The Majlis is set to ratify the bill, after ratifying ‎the first step on July 2.
    According to the statement, „the bill not only increases the number of ‎crimes punishable by death, but also endangers the security of citizens if it is passed, ‎given its deficiencies.“ ‎The center criticized the bill for ‎defining „malicious“ acts as deserving of death, and noted that that another section of the bill establishes that „weblogs and sites promoting corruption and ‎apostasy are deserving of capital punishment in the same way that crimes such as rape and ‎armed robbery are.“

  9. MEMRI IRANIAN MEDIA BLOG – Ahmadinejad: Martyrs‘ Path Known By All Nations As Only Path To Salvation; Iran in Economic Struggle With Enemies
    Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said July 23 that today all the „martyrs‘ aspirations“ are „being realized,“ and that „the „hegemonic system is on the verge of annihilation.“
    Ahmadinejad was speaking to a group of families of martyrs in Yasouj, Kohgilouyeh-Boyer Ahmad province.
    He added that the path trodden by martyrs is known by all nations as the only path to salvation, dignity and glory, and that Iran was proud of its 200,000 martyred citizens.
    Addressing the great powers, he said, „The Iranian nation invites you to make recourse to the path of purity and justice of the divine prophets. This is good for all, especially for you.“ He then warned the West, „If you wish to use the language of force and threat with the Iranian nation, our nation will stand united and deal a heavy blow to the ill-wishers of the system.“
    He said that the world is fed up with the ongoing international conditions and await a ray of hope.
    In another speech in Yasouj, Ahmadinejad said that Iran is engaged in economic struggle with its „enemies and their followers“: „Enemies and some of their agents inside the country made their utmost efforts since two years ago focusing particularly on economic issues as they thought they could topple the Iranian government, revolution and nation.“
    He added, „This is wishful thinking… With the help of God, the Islamic Revolution will thwart all conspiracies.“
