    In some ways, the most important — or at least second most important — thing to happen in the Middle East this week is that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah went too far, calling for the overthrow of Egypt’s government. Egypt’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit responded, „They have actually declared war on Egypt.“ And when he says „they“ he means Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, and Hamas. The Saudis and Gulf Arabs are also drawing lines deeper than ever before. Publicly and loudly, they look at Gaza and see Arabs and Muslims, and criticize Israel. More softly in public and loudly in private they look at Gaza and see the Iranian axis. This is the Middle East of 2008 and not of 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, or 1998. The Palestinian issue has little effect on any other issue. The real conflict is Iran-Syria against Egypt-Saudi Arabia. Islamists are seeking to conquer the region from Arab nationalists. Radical groups are not interested in happy homelands but jihad and genocide. And so the issue is not why Israel is attacking Hamas in Gaza now, but     why Hamas in Gaza is attacking Israel now.

    IRGC commander Mohammad Ali Jafari noted on January 4 that Israel will face another failure within a few days. 
    He said, „Considering the history of Gaza people, who have been growing in difficulties and their fighter spirit, we will be witnessing Israel’s failure in the Gaza region.“
    He added that the Gazans‘ war and resistance mechanism is not in need of military aid from other countries, and that „Gaza has been perseverance throughout the history, and has very courageous and strong people and even the geographic condition allows them to continue resistance.“
    Jafari then said that Muslims did not expect Arab leaders to show a green light to Islam’s enemies for incursions against a part of Palestine.
    „This would be a blemish in history of these Arab states and they will be punished in this world for their silence,“ he warned.

    Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) called on world Muslims to defend Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
    In a statement released January 4, the IRGC invited world Muslims to „defend the oppressed Palestinians in Gaza Strip“ and urged „Muslims of the world should stay united against world arrogance, the criminal Zionists in particular.“
    The statement also asked Muslim nations „to line up against wicked party with more solidarity than ever.“

    Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said today that the Israelis‘ attitude towards the defenseless people of Gaza is worse than that of the Nazis.
    „Today, the attitude of the Israelis towards the defenseless people of Gaza is worse than that of the Nazis. Internationally, the Zionist regime is compromised to attain its objectives,“ said Larijani in a meeting with a group of officials at the Majlis.
    Larijani criticized certain regional leaders for their indifference in the face of recent events in Palestine, saying, „Justifying their indifference to recent events in Palestine, certain regional leaders said that the reason we cannot interfere in Palestine is that our Palestinian brothers have differences among themselves.“

  10. MEMRI IRANIAN MEDIA BLOG – Iranian Supreme National Council Sec’y Jalili Meets With Nasrallah In Lebanon

    Iranian Supreme National Security Council secretary Saeed Jalili has met with Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon to discuss the latest developments in the Gaza Strip.
    Jalili had already gone to Syria and discussed Gaza with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and Hamas political bureau head Khaled Mash’al. He is to return to Damascus after holding talks with Lebanese officials and Nasrallah.
    In another meeting, Jalili spoke with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and stressed the necessity of using the parliament’s full potential to pressure the Zionist regime to „end the slaughter of defenseless Palestinians and remove the Gaza Strip blockade.“
    Jalili also reviewed latest developments of Gaza with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora in Lebanon.

    More than 70,000 students from universities throughout Iran have registered to carry out esteshhadi (martyrdom-seeking) operations.
    Announcing this at a press conference today, Esmaeel Ahmadi, public relations director for the Students‘ Basij Organization said that the students would act as part of Esteshhadi battalions.
    He added that a supplement on Gaza was being published, covering Gaza events and student movement activities in related areas, and would be distributed among the people by public centers in the coming days.

    Senior IRGC official and head of Iran’s Foundation for the Remembrance of the Holy Defense Brig.-Gen Mir-Faisal Baqerzadeh has said that the army of the Islamic countries must defend the Muslims, and that „only the military option can save Gaza.“
    He also called on the Muslim countries not to export oil to countries that support Israel, so as to pressure them.
