   1. ULRICH W. SAHM – Israelisches Massaker ?
      Jerusalem, 6. Januar 2009 – Die Zahl der Toten bei einem israelischen Angriff auf die Al Fahoura Schule im Flüchtlingslager Dschabalija, oder „in dessen Nähe“, liegt zwischen 3, 12, 30, 40 und 42. Als Quelle geben die Agenturen mal „Palästinenser“ oder den Chef der Rettungsdienste in Gaza, Mo’aweya Hassanein, an. Der Sprecher der UNWRA Flüchtlingshilfe Organisation, Chris Gunness, verurteilte schon die israelische Attacke und sprach von 3 toten Zivilisten bei dem Angriff auf die „deutlich als UNO Einrichtung gekennzeichnete Einrichtung“. Einer anderen Agentur sagte er, dass er keine Ahnung habe, wie viele Tote es gegeben habe, da er seine eigenen Mitarbeiter nicht erreichen könne. Ebenso widersprüchlich sind die Angaben der namentlich nicht genannten „Augenzeugen“, ob eine israelische Panzergranate oder aber eine vom Kampfflugzeug  abgeschossene Rakete die Schule getroffen habe, „in deren Nähe“ die Zivilisten getötet worden seien. In der Schule hätten 400 Palästinenser Zuflucht gesucht, nachdem sie ihre Häuser aus Angst vor den israelischen Angriffen geräumt hätten. Angeblich parken israelische Panzer in drei Kilometern Entfernung von der Schule außerhalb des Flüchtlingslagers. Vom Gelände der Schule oder „aus ihrer Nähe“, wiederum je nach Quelle, beschießen angeblich Hamaskämpfer die israelischen Panzer, woraufhin diese dann zurückgeschossen hätten.
      Die Nachrichtenagenturen berichten inzwischen von mindestens drei Schulen in im Gazastreifen, in Khan Younis, Gaza und Dschabaliah. In jeder Schule hätten jeweils 400 Menschen Zuflucht gesucht, aber die Zahl der Opfer nach angeblichen israelischen Angriffen klaffen gemäß palästinensischen Angaben gewaltig auseinander, zwischen 3 Toten und 48.
      Der israelische Militärsprecher hat nach einer „ersten noch unvollständigen“ Untersuchung des Vorfalls bei einer Schule im Norden des Gazastreifens festgestellt, dass „angeblich“ von der Schule aus israelische Truppen mit Mörsergranaten beschossen worden seien. Als israelische Panzer das Feuer erwiderten, sei die Schule „möglicherweise“ getroffen worden. Weiter erklärte der Militärsprecher, dass die Hamas in „zynischer Weise“ den Schutz ziviler Einrichtung nutze, um Israel zu beschießen. Im Oktober 2007 habe die Hamas vom Hof der gleichen Schule aus Raketen auf Israel abgefeuert. Das sei von einer Drohne gefilmt und später veröffentlicht worden. Der UNO-Generalsekretär hatte daraufhin die Hamas verurteilt, die Schule als Raketenstellung missbraucht zu haben.
      Die Nachrichtenagenturen berichten inzwischen von mindestens drei Schulen in im Gazastreifen, in Khan Younis, Gaza und Dschabaliah. In jeder Schule hätten jeweils 400 Menschen Zuflucht gesucht aber die Zahl der Opfer nach angeblichen israelischen Angriffen klaffen gemäß palästinensischen Angaben gewaltig auseinander, zwischen 3 Toten und 48. Widersprüchlich sind auch Angaben zu Kämpfern der Hamas die angeblich von den Schulen aus israelische Panzer beschossen hätten. Augenzeugen widersprechen sich auch, indem sie mal behaupten, die Schulen seien von Flugzeugen oder aber von Panzergranaten getroffen worden.
      Die israelischen Medien berichten ausführlich über den Vorfall, ebenfalls ohne auf zuverlässige Informationen zurückgreifen zu können. „Es besteht die Gefahr, dass die Hamas hier ihr Kana-Massaker konstruiert. Die israelische Armee muss alles tun, um das zu verhindern“, sagt Gal Berger, Radiokorrespondent für „palästinensische Angelegenheiten“. Kana steht für zwei „Massaker“ im gleichnamigen libanesischen Dorf. 1996, während der vom damaligen Ministerpräsidenten Schimon Peres befohlenen Operation „Früchte des Zorns“ hatte die israelische Artillerie Beschuss der Hisbollah erwidert. Die Hisbollah hatte ihre Stellung keine zehn Meter neben einem UNO-Hauptquartier einrichtet. In dem UNO-Lager hatten viele Dorfbewohner Zuflucht gesucht. Ein winziger Fehler in der Zieleinrichtung führte zu etwa 300 Toten im Lager, anstatt wenige Meter davon entfernt die Hisbollahstellung zu treffen. Israel musste deswegen auf internationalen Druck seine Operation abbrechen. Im Sommer 2006 gab es eine Explosion auf oder neben einem Haus, in dessen Keller über hundert Menschen Schutz gesucht hatten. Bis heute ist unklar, was genau passierte. Aus dem angeblich eingestürzten Keller holten die Retter aufrechten Ganges einen Toten nach dem anderen heraus und hielten sie in die Kameras. Die Agenturen überschlugen sich förmlich mit den Totenzahlen, 60, 70, 80.  Obgleich die wahre Totenzahl von 28 schon am ersten Tag bekannt war, lenkten die Agenturen erst eine Woche später ein, nachdem die Menschenrechtsorganisation Human Rights Watch eine eigene Untersuchung gemacht und die Namensliste der 28 Toten veröffentlicht hatte. So wurde Kana zu einem Symbolname in Nahost, und zu einem bewährten Mittel der Hisbollah und jetzt vielleicht der Hamas, Israel eine moralische wie politische Niederlage beizufügen.
      Derweil berichtete die Militärkorrespondentin Carmela Menasche von einigen kleineren Zwischenfällen, die zu dem Dilemma der israelischen Soldaten betrügen. In einer Schule entdeckten sie eine versteckte Bombe in einem Klavier. Ein Palästinenser, als israelischer Soldat verkleidet, näherte sich in verdächtiger Weise einer Gruppe Soldaten. Als sie auf ihn schossen, explodierte der Mann mit der Jacke eines Selbstmordattentäters. Weiter berichtete sie von Hamaskämpfern, die Kinder vor sich hielten, um sich zu schützen und andere, die sich hinter Ambulanzen gehockt hätten, um von den Israelis nicht beschossen zu werden.
      
   2. ULRICH W. SAHM – Den Schlüssel zum Waffenstillstand hält Ägypten (aktualisiert)
      Jerusalem, 5. Januar 2009 – Eine ganze Riege europäischer Außenminister, aus Frankreich, Tschechien und Schweden, sowie die EU Kommissarin Benita Ferrero-Walder und EU-Chefdiplomat Javier Solano füllte am Montag Mittag das Büro der israelischen Außenministerin Zipi Livni. Am Abend machte zusätzlich der französische Präsident Nicolas Sarkosy seine Runde, erst bei Präsident Abbas in Ramallah und dann bei Israels Staats- und Regierungschef, Schimon Peres und Ehud Olmert. Am Dienstag trat Sarkozy schon mit dem syrischen Präsidenten Baschar Assad in Damaskus vor die Presse und redete von dem Einfluss Syriens auf die Hamas, sich den Forderungen der internationalen Gemeinschaft zu stellen.
      Diese geballte europäische Präsenz in Nahost will das amerikanische Vakuum füllen, das der scheidende Präsident George W. Bush hinterlässt und der auf Hawai Golf spielende künftige Präsident Barack Obama noch nicht mit eigenen Worten füllen will.
      Die Europäer machen sich in erster Linie Sorgen um die Zivilisten in Gaza.
      Sie glauben willig den Notrufen der internationalen Hilfsorganisationen, die politischen Druck auf Israel fordern und mit einer baldigen humanitären Katastrophe drohen. Im Namen der EU forderte der tschechische Außenminister Karel Schwarzenberg allein von Israel die Einstellung der Kriegshandlungen, einem umgehenden Rückzug aus Gaza und die Öffnung der Grenzübergänge. Die Europäer haben keinen Einfluss auf die Hamas. Die radikalislamische Organisation hatte eine mit ägyptischer Hilfe ausgehandelte halbjährige Waffenruhe erst gebrochen und dann aufgekündigt. In den Tagen um Weihnachten provozierte sie Israel mit heftigem Raketenbeschuss zur militärischen Reaktion. Ägypten wirft Hamas vor, Israel leichtfertig in den Krieg gezogen zu haben. Der palästinensische Präsident Abbas klagt, dass die Hamas alle seine Ratschläge, Israel nicht anzugreifen, ausgeschlagen habe.
      Die EU kann mit der von ihr selbst und vom UN Sicherheitsrat definierten „Terrororganisation“ Hamas nicht reden, solange die nicht drei Bedingungen
      erfüllt: Anerkennung Israels, Absage an Gewalt und Akzeptanz bestehender Verträge.  So können die Europäer öffentlichen Druck nur auf Israel ausüben, während Druck auf die Hamas nur auf Umwegen funktioniert, über die ägyptischen Vermittler oder über Syrien. „Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass Syrien einen wichtigen Beitrag bei der Suche nach einer Lösung leisten kann“, sagte der französische Präsident. Assad sollte seinen Einfluss nutzen, die Hamas zu „Vernunft, Frieden und Versöhnung“ zu bekehren. Assad verurteilte den „barbarischen Angriff der Israelis“ und versprach nichts Konkretes. Syrien gilt neben Iran als wichtigster Verbündeter der Hamas und beherbergt in Damaskus den „Auslands-Chef“ der Hamas, Khaled Maschal.
      EU-„Außenminister“ Solana soll angeboten haben, die EU-Beobachter an die Grenze zwischen Gaza und Ägypten zurückzuschicken, damit der Rafah-Übergang wieder geöffnet werden könne. Das würde bedeuten, dass zwei Parteien des Abkommens über das Rafah-Grenzterminal ausgeschaltet werden müssten: Israel und die durch den Putsch der Hamas vertriebenen Polizisten der Autonomiebehörde. Ägyptens Präsident Hosni Mubarak hatte zuvor erklärt, dass Ägypten die Grenze bei Rafah erst öffnen werde, sowie die Streitkräfte der Autonomiebehörde, die israelischen Überwachungskameras und die EU-Beobachter entsprechend des Abkommens wieder installiert seien. So machte Mubarak die Öffnung der Grenze vom Ende der Hamas-Herrschaft abhängig.
      Angesichts der widersprüchlich formulierten israelischen Kriegsziele, die Hamas abzusetzen oder nur zu schwächen um ein Ende des Raketenbeschusses herbeizuführen, lässt sich nicht ablesen, wie sich Israel einen Waffenstillstand vorstellt, gemäß der Formel „die Sicherheitslage grundlegend zu ändern“.
      Der tschechische Außenminister sagte im Namen der EU im Jerusalemer Außenministerium, dass ein Waffenstillstand umgehend durchgesetzt werden müsse, auch ohne dass Israel seine Ziele erreicht. Doch das würde der Hamas einen Sieg bescheren, der nicht nur auf Israel  sondern – wie Zipi Livni sagte – verheerende Auswirkungen auch auf die „gemäßigten Regime“ in der arabischen Welt und sogar auf die Autonomieregierung in Ramallah haben würde.
      Gleichgültig wie die israelische Militäroperation ausgeht und wie hart am Ende die Hamas geschlagen sein wird, liegt der Schlüssel für eine echte Beruhigung der Lage in Kairo. Nur die Ägypter können mit der Hamas und ihrem Erzfeind, der Fatah-Partei  in Ramallah, reden. Es liegt zudem allein an Ägypten, eine künftige Wiederbewaffnung und Stärkung der Hamas, finanziell wie militärisch, zu verhindern. Denn nur die Ägypter könnten den einzigen von Israel nicht kontrollierten Zugang zum Gazastreifen versiegeln: die Schmugglertunnel unter der Grenze nach Sinai. Die Ägypter haben bisher die Augen verschlossen, wenn da ganze Rinderherden, Millionen Liter Treibstoffe, riesige Mengen Waffen und Raketen aus Iran unterirdisch in den Gazastreifen gebracht wurden. Die Israelis vermuten 200 bis 300 Tunnel, von denen sie viele mit bunkerbrechenden Bomben zerstört haben.

2. NEUESTE KURZMELDUNGEN VON ISRAELNETZ….
   1. Hohe Auszeichnung für „Waltz With Bashir“
      NEW YORK (inn) – US-Filmkritiker haben den dokumentarischen Trickfilm „Waltz With Bashir“ des israelischen Produzenten Ari Folman zum besten Film des Jahres 2008 gekürt. Das gab das Magazin „Variety“ bekannt.Der Film ist eine israelisch-deutsch-französische Koproduktion. Er gilt als das außergewöhnlichste Kinoereignis des vergangenen Jahres. In dem animierten Dokumentarfilm begibt sich Folman auf eine Reise in seine Vergangenheit während des ersten Libanonkrieges 1982.
      Die Auszeichnung wurde von der US-amerikanischen „National Society of Film Critics“ (NSFC) verliehen. Der 1966 gegründeten Gesellschaft gehören etwa 60 namhafte Filmkritiker an. Sie vergeben jährlich den „National Society of Film Critics Award“ für verschiedene Kategorien. Der Preis gilt neben dem „Oscar“ und dem „Golden Globe Award“ zu den begehrtesten Filmpreisen.  
       
   2. Schulklassen weichen palästinensischen Raketen
      JERUSALEM (inn) – Aufgrund der Angriffe ziehen ganze israelische Schulklassen aus Ortschaften im Einzugsgebiet der palästinensischen Raketen in ruhigere Gegenden um. Betroffen sind vor allem Schüler der Abschlussklassen, die sich auf das Abitur vorbereiten müssen.Einem Bericht der Zeitung „Jediot Aharonot“ zufolge wurde eine 11. Klasse aus Aschdod mit 20 Schülern und ihrem Lehrer in einem Internat der Küstenstadt Netanja untergebracht. Nach dem Unterricht nehmen die Gäste an den Freizeitangeboten des städtischen Jugendrates teil. In dem Internat werden derzeit 100 weitere Schüler der Jahrgangsstufen 11 und 12 aus der Wüstenstadt Netivot erwartet. 30 weitere Jugendliche aus dem Gebiet um den Gazastreifen sind bereits eingetroffen. Die Stadt Holon südlich von Tel Aviv hat 134 Schüler aufgenommen. Zudem wurden 40 Kinder aus der raketengeplagten Region in Kindergärten untergebracht. Abiturienten kamen auch in die Gegend von Jerusalem. An israelischen Gymnasien endet die Schulzeit nach zwölf Jahren. Die Abiturprüfungen sind auf mehrere Schuljahre verteilt.  
       
   3. Arabischer Schauspieler: „Hamas ist schuld“
      KAIRO (inn) – Der berühmte ägyptische Comedian und Schauspieler Adel Imam hat die Hamas für die Gewalt im Gazastreifen verantwortlich gemacht. Zudem sprach er sich gegen Generalstreiks als Zeichen der Solidarität mit den Palästinensern aus. Diese schadeten der Wirtschaft des Landes und dienten lediglich Israel.Die ägyptische Regierung habe die Hamas vor einer israelischen Militäroperation gewarnt. Die radikal-islamische Organisation habe dies jedoch ignoriert und sich stattdessen für einen „asymmetrischen Krieg“ entschieden. Die Hamas hätte wissen müssen, dass Israel den andauernden Raketenbeschuss nicht einfach so hinnehme, so der Schauspieler laut der Tageszeitung „Jerusalem Post“.
      Laut dem Bericht geriet Imam für diese Äußerungen in Misskredit bei zahlreichen Schauspielerkollegen, welche die Hamas unterstützten.
      Der 68-Jährige ist ein langjähriger Kritiker des islamischen Fundamentalismus. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Schauspieler in der arabischen Welt. Sein letzter Film, „Hassan wa Morqos“, ruft zum friedlichen Zusammenleben zwischen Christen und Moslems auf. Seit dem Jahr 2000 ist Adel Imam UN-Sonderbotschafter.
      
   4. Tausende iranische Studenten zum Kampf gegen Israel bereit
      TEHERAN (inn) – Im Iran haben fünf Studentengruppen zu Selbstmordanschlägen gegen Israel aufgerufen. Bislang hätten sich etwa 70.000 Freiwillige gemeldet. Sie stünden bereit, um im Gazastreifen gegen Israel zu kämpfen.Wie die Tageszeitung „Jediot Aharonot“ unter Berufung auf die staatliche iranische Nachrichtenagentur „IRNA“ meldet, hatten die Studentengruppen sowie eine Gruppe konservativer Geistlicher in der vergangenen Woche den Aufruf gestartet. Sie hätten die Regierung unter Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinedschad gebeten, bei den entsprechenden Behörden den Weg für ihre Ausreise in den Gazastreifen zu bereiten. Allerdings habe Ahmadinedschad sich bislang nicht zu der Forderung geäußert.
      Am 28. Dezember 2008 hatte Irans oberster Geistlicher, Ajatollah Ali Chamenei, ein religiöses Edikt erlassen. Demnach gelte jeder als Märtyrer, der bei dem Versuch falle, die Palästinenser im Gazastreifen gegen Israel zu verteidigen.   
       
   5. Solidarität mit Israel bekunden
      BERLIN (inn) – Am kommenden Sonntag treffen sich Demonstranten in Berlin zu einer Solidaritätskundgebung mit Israel. „Die Demonstration ist kein Aufruf zum Führen eines Krieges, vielmehr soll das Selbstverteidigungsrecht Israels unterstützt werden“, heißt es in der Ankündigung der Veranstaltung. Die Demonstration soll auf die Kriegsopfer auf beiden Seiten hinweisen. Die Teilnehmer fordern politische Lösungen sowie die Abschaffung der Hamas-Regierung in den Palästinensergebieten. Neben verschiedenen Rednern treten Maya Saban und Vivian Kanner auf und singen die israelische Nationalhymne zum Abschluss der Veranstaltung. Die Teilnehmer treffen sich am 11. Januar ab 14 Uhr auf dem Berliner Breitscheidplatz. Die Kundgebung endet gegen 15 Uhr.  
       

   6. Mauretanien zieht Botschafter zurück
      NOUAKCHOTT (inn) – Die Regierung von Mauretanien hat ihren Botschafter aus Israel abgezogen. Wie ein Sprecher des mauretanischen Außenministeriums mitteilte, wurde der Diplomat zur „Rücksprache“ in sein Land beordert.In der vergangenen Woche hatten Tausende Menschen in der Hauptstadt Nouakchott demonstriert.  Sie hatten die Regierung aufgefordert, die Beziehungen mit Israel aufgrund der Militäroperation im Gazastreifen abzubrechen.
      Mauretanien gehört neben Jordanien und Ägypten zu den arabischen Staaten, die offizielle Beziehungen mit Israel haben. Der Botschafter im jüdischen Staat, Ahmed Ould Teguedi, hat seit der Aufnahme der Beziehungen 1999 seinen Posten inne.
      

   7. Hamas: „Koran verdammt Juden zur Vernichtung“
      GAZA (inn)- Die radikal-antijüdische Haltung der Hamas dokumentiert die Organisation „Palestinian Media Watch“ (PMW). Ein Video zeigt einen Religionsführer der palästinensischen Terrorgruppe, der die Vernichtung aller Juden mit dem Koran rechtfertigt.In einem Kapitel des Koran heiße es, die Kinder Israels, also die Juden, bildeten das „Zentrum der Korruption“ und Palästina könne nur dann gesegnet werden, wenn es „den Kopf dieser Schlange abbeißt“. Dies, so der Kleriker, gelte für Palästina, aber auch für den Rest der Welt und zu jeder Zeit. „Der Koran verdammt die Juden zur Vernichtung“, heißt es in der Aufnahme aus dem vergangenen Jahr weiter.
      Die PMW wurde 1996 mit dem Ziel gegründet, palästinensische Medien und Schulbücher zu beobachten und so radikal-islamische und terroristische Einflüsse auf die palästinensische Gesellschaft aufzuzeigen. Die Aufnahme des Klerikers stammt aus dem Hamas-Fernsehsender „Al Aqsa TV“. 
       

   8. Sarkozy auf Friedensmission
      JERUSALEM / RAMALLAH (inn) – Der französische Präsident Nicolas Sarkozy hat erneut eine humanitäre Feuerpause im Gazastreifen gefordert. Am Montag kam er mit israelischen und palästinensischen Politikern zusammen, wie die Tageszeitung „Jediot Aharonot“ berichtet.Der amtierende Premier Ehud Olmert sagte bei seinem Treffen mit Sarkozy in Jerusalem, Israel wolle die Hamas durch den Einsatz im Gazastreifen nicht stürzen, auch wenn es dazu in der Lage sei: „Wir haben für diese Operation ein begrenztes Ziel bestimmt, nämlich, die Sicherheitslage im Süden zu ändern und Hunderttausende Bürger von der Angst des Terrors zu befreien.“ Frankreich spiele eine entscheidende Rolle beim Zügeln der Hamas, fügte Olmert hinzu. Er forderte Sarkozy auf, die Bemühungen des UN-Sicherheitsrates aufzuhalten, eine Waffenruhe zu erzwingen oder Israel in einer Resolution zu verurteilen. Eine solche Resolution sei derzeit angesichts des israelischen Kampfes gegen den Terror nicht weise. „Heute ist es die Hamas, morgen die Hisbollah und der Islamische Dschihad, und dann kommt Al-Qaida.“
      „UN-Kompromisse oft zu Lasten Israels“
      „Die Erfahrung hat gezeigt, dass das Bedürfnis des UN-Sicherheitsrates, einen Kompromiss zu finden, auf Kosten Israels geht“, so Olmert. „Wir werden es nicht aufrechterhalten, dass wir auf dieselbe Plattform gestellt werden wie die Hamas, einen Terror-Organisation. Wir sind nicht zwei Seiten derselben Gleichung.“ Ein Kompromiss sei nicht möglich, wenn die Hamas anschließend in zwei Monaten immer noch auf Israel schießen könne. Vor der jüngsten Feuerpause hätten die Raketen der Palästinenser eine Reichweite von 20 Kilometern gehabt. Danach habe sich die Reichweite auf 40 Kilometer erhöht. „Das Endziel ist, dass die Hamas nicht nur das Feuer einstellt, sondern dass auch gewährleistet ist, dass sie in Zukunft nicht feuern kann.“
      Sarkozy sprach auch mit dem israelischen Staatspräsidenten Schimon Peres. Dieser sagte, Israel wolle verhindern, dass der Iran Gaza erreiche. „Wir haben nicht vor, in Gaza zu bleiben, aber wir wollen es auch nicht der Kontrolle der Hamas überlassen.“ Sarkozy bezeichnete sich als Freund, der offen reden wolle. Er forderte eine mehrtägige Feuerpause für humanitäre Zwecke. „Israel ist stark, Israel muss das Risiko des Friedens eingehen.“ Der Franzose fügte an, er habe die israelische Sicherheit immer als Priorität betrachtet.
      Treffen mit Abbas
      In Ramallah war Sarkozy zuvor mit dem palästinensischen Präsidenten und Fatah-Vorsitzenden Mahmud Abbas zusammengetroffen. Dieser verlangte eine unverzügliche und bedingungslose Einstellung der israelischen Angriffe im Gazastreifen. „Danach können wir über alle anderen Dinge diskutieren, einschließlich der Wiederöffnung der Grenzübergänge und der Erneuerung der Waffenruhe.“ Bei einer gemeinsamen Pressekonferenz mit Abbas sagte Sarkozy, die Europäische Union bemühe sich um ein Ende des Blutvergießens. Er verurteilte die Angriffe der Hamas auf Israel. Der französische Präsident war am Montag in der Region eingetroffen. Er plant auch Gespräche mit Politikern in Ägypten, Syrien und dem Libanon. 
       

   9. Kämpfe nehmen zu – 4 Soldaten getötet
      GAZA (inn) – Die Kämpfe im Gazastreifen weiten sich immer mehr auf dicht besiedelte Wohngebiete aus. Dabei wurden am Montagabend nahe Gaza drei Armeeangehörige durch sogenanntes „freundliches Feuer“ getötet. In der Nacht zum Dienstag kam zudem ein Offizier der Fallschirmjäger ums Leben – offenbar ebenfalls durch israelischen Beschuss. Unter den Palästinensern gab es Schätzungen zufolge allein am Montag etwa 100 Tote.Am Montagabend hatten Soldaten der Golani-Einheit bei Gefechten mit Hamas-Kämpfern in Dschabalija Schutz in einem Gebäude gesucht. Wie die Tageszeitung „Jediot Aharonot“ unter Berufung auf einen Armeesprecher meldet, habe ein israelischer Panzer anschließend versehentlich eine Granate auf das Haus abgefeuert. Dabei wurden drei Soldaten getötet. 24 weitere Soldaten wurden verletzt, drei davon schwer, ein weiterer befindet sich in kritischem Zustand.
      In der Nacht zum Dienstag wurde im nördlichen Gazastreifen ein Offizier der Fallschirmjäger getötet. Ersten Berichten zufolge kam er ebenfalls versehentlich durch israelisches Feuer ums Leben. Die Armee prüft den Vorfall derzeit noch.
      Israelischen Schätzungen zufolge kamen bei den Kämpfen am Montag etwa 100 Palästinenser ums Leben, darunter auch zahlreiche Zivilisten. 80 Palästinenser wurden von Soldaten verhaftet.
      Am Montag feuerten Palästinenser mehr als 40 Raketen auf israelisches Gebiet ab. Die Geschosse landeten in Aschkelon, Aschdod, Sderot, Kirijat Malachi, Netivot und Be´er Scheva. In der Mittelmeerstadt Aschdod verfehlte eine Rakete nur knapp einen leeren Kindergarten. Bei den Angriffen entstand Sachschaden.
      Israelisches Baby verletzt
      Am Dienstagmorgen ging der palästinensische Beschuss aus dem Gazastreifen weiter. Eine Rakete landete in Gedera, rund 30 Kilometer vor Tel Aviv. Sie schlug neben einem Wohnhaus ein. Dabei wurde ein drei Monate altes Baby leicht verletzt. Mehrere Israelis erlitten einen Schock.
      Laut palästinensischen Angaben kamen bei Kämpfen in verschiedenen Ortschaften des Gazastreifens am Dienstagmorgen mindestens 18 Palästinenser ums Leben. Zehn von ihnen wurden getötet, als eine Granate der israelischen Marine ein Haus am Strand traf.
      Laut dem UN-Nothilfekoordinator John Holmes wurden seit Beginn der Militäroperation vor elf Tagen mehr als 550 Palästinenser getötet, 125 davon waren Zivilisten. Mehr als 2.500 Palästinenser wurden zudem verletzt.
      Ende der Kämpfe am Wochenende?
      Wie ein hochrangiger israelischer Offizier gegenüber der Tageszeitung „Jerusalem Post“ mitteilte, versuche die Hamas, die Armee in dicht besiedelte Gebiete zu drängen. Die Soldaten versuchten hingegen, die palästinensischen Kämpfer in die Peripherie zu treiben. Laut dem Bericht sei ein Ende der Operation „Gegossenes Blei“ in Aussicht. „Sollte alles wie geplant verlaufen, könnte die Operation in den nächsten 72 Stunden zu Ende sein“, sagte ein hochrangiger Militärangehöriger der Zeitung. 
       

   10. Hamas-Führer droht weltweit mit Ermordung von Israelis
       GAZA (inn) – Einer der ranghöchsten Führer der radikal-islamischen Hamas-Terrororganisation im Gazastreifen, Mahmud Sahar, hat mit weltweiten Anschlägen auf Israelis gedroht. In einer Ansprache auf dem Hamas-eigenen Fernsehsender Al-Aksa-TV rief er seine Kämpfer dazu auf, „den Feind zu zermalmen“. Mahmud Sahar gehört zu den langjährigen Anführern der Hamas im Gazastreifen und gilt als einer der Rädelsführer der gewaltsamen Machübernahme der Hamas über das Gebiet im Juni 2007.
       In einer Ansprache auf „Al-Aksa-TV“ sagte Sahar, die Tötung von Israelis „überall auf der Welt“ sei durch die Ermordung „unserer Leute durch Israelis“ gerechtfertigt. Hamas-Kämpfer rief er auf, „den Feind zu zermalmen“. In den gegenwärtigen militärischen Gefechten mit Israel gab sich Sahar siegessicher – die Hamas werde im Kampf gegen Israel einen „endgültigen Sieg erringen“.
       Es ist unklar, wann und wo die Ansprache aufgezeichnet wurde, schreibt die Tageszeitung „Jerusalem Post“. Seit dem Beginn der Kämpfe am 27. Dezember halten sich alle Hamas-Führer in Verstecken auf.

   1. Raketenangriffe auf Israel 
       
      Auch heute haben die palästinensischen Terroristen im Gaza-Streifen ihre massiven Raketenangriffe auf Israel fortgesetzt. Bis zum frühen Nachmittag waren es bereits mindestens 34 Raketen, von denen die meisten in der Kleinstadt Sderot und ihrer Umgebung landeten. Doch schlugen auch zwei Grad-Raketen in Be’er Sheva ein, und eine Grad-Rakete gelangte sogar bis nach Gedera im Zentrum des Landes. Dort wurde ein Säugling leicht verletzt.

   2. Humanitäre Hilfe für Gaza
      Parallel zur Militäroperation der israelischen Armee koordiniert Israel die Lieferung von humanitären Hilfsgütern in den Gaza-Streifen. Gestern passierten 49 Lastwagen mit Lebensmitteln, Medikamenten und medizinischem Equipment den Übergang Kerem Shalom. Dazu gehörten 19 Transporte der Flüchtlingshilfswerks UNRWA, 12 Transporte des UN-Welternährungsprogramms (WFP) und drei Transporte des Roten Kreuzes.
      Heute werden 50 bis 60 Lastwagen den Übergang in Richtung Gaza passieren.
      Am Treibstoff-Terminal Nahal Oz wurden gestern 215 000 Liter Diesel für das Kraftwerk in Gaza, 93 000 Liter Diesel für den Bedarf diverser UN-Organisationen und 50 Tonnen Kochgas für Privathaushalte in den Gaza-Streifen geleitet. Auch heute soll der Zufluss fortgeführt werden.

      Präsident Shimon Peres: „Europa muss seine Augen öffnen in Hinsicht auf die Kämpfe in Gaza.       Since December 27, over 500 rockets and mortars have landed in Israel. Almost a million Israeli residents are under immediate threat.

      Jan 6: A 3-month-old baby girl was injured by shrapnel when a Grad rocket fired from north Gaza Tuesday morning exploded in the city of Gedera, between Ashdod and Rehovot. 
      Jan 5: A Grad rocket exploded in a kindergarten – this time in Ashdod – causing extensive damage as schools remain closed.
      Four IDF soldiers were killed during the fighting in Gaza. (Haaretz report). 
      FM Tzipi Livni holds joint press conference:
      In a joint press conference with EU representatives visiting Israel, FM Livni said: „We all share the same understanding of what Hamas means. Israel is part of the international community, and all of us need to understand that the clear demand coming from the international community is to stop terror and violence… This is a fight against terrorism, and it is not going to be settled in an agreement with terror.“  Full story  
      Humanitarian effort complements ground operations 
      Today for the first time since the beginning of the ground operation the Gaza Strip crossings opened for activity. The humanitarian effort, that is a complementary component of the military operation, facilitated the movement of 49 trucks laden with humanitarian good. The goods transferred were comprised of basic food commodities, medical supplies and medication. Today the World Food Programme resumed delivery of commodities to the Gaza strip following a two day recess. Tomorrow Kerem Shalom is scheduled to open for 80 shipments of aid.

      Also, the Nahal Oz fuel depot operated and conveyed 215,000 liters of heavy duty diesel (required for the Gaza power station), 93,000 liters of diesel for the use of various UN organizations and 50 tons of cooking gas for domestic uses. 
      At the request of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Israel also facilitated the access for two doctors and two nurses to the Gaza Strip, via Erez crossing.

   2. Kommentar von Ed Koch  (ehemaliger Bürgermeister von NY) – January 5, 2009  – Israel Is Exercising Its Right of Self-Defense
                   Opponents and enemies of Israel are in full  hue and cry over Israel’s attack on the terrorist organization Hamas and its government and military installations in Gaza.  The main criticism is that the Israeli response to the rocketing of southern Israel is „disproportionate.“  There is little, if any, dispute that Israel’s goal of ending all rocket attacks on Israel and its civilian population, is reasonable and indeed sanctioned by international law.
                  It seems to me that if the goal is reasonable, then the only issue is whether the force applied to achieve that goal is reasonable.  In my view, the fact that seven days of continuous bombing of Gaza by the Israeli air force did not accomplish the goal demonstrates that the amount of force used by Israel has been less than needed.   Hamas could have stopped its rocket attacks but chose not to.  So now Israel’s ground attack has begun with greater force.
                   Every day during the bombing of Gaza, Hamas proudly announced that it was keeping up its rocketing of Israel.  Never did the number of rockets fall below 20 per day, and on some days it reached 70.  On one day, one of the rockets landed in an Israeli classroom which, had it been occupied at the time,  would have injured or killed dozens of Israeli children.  
                    There is a difference between the injuries and deaths of Palestinian civilians and in particular, children in Gaza – which everyone, including the Israelis deplore — and the deaths of Israeli civilians and children in Israel, which apparently no one in Gaza regrets.  Hamas wants to deliberately kill every Israeli Jew it can, and they say so, while the Israelis regret any Palestinian civilian casualties that occur as the Israelis direct their fire at Hamas terrorists who maintain their installations in civilian occupied areas, using those civilians as human shields.
                   The governments of Egypt and Jordan, as well as the Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas, all acknowledge that Hamas began the latest hostilities by declaring the existing ceasefire agreed to in June 2008 at an end in mid-December 2008.  The New York Times of January 3rd reported, „…government officials including Mr. Mubarak and Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit have blamed Hamas for abandoning the cease-fire with Israel and seeming to seek Israeli retaliation.“  The New  York Post of January 3rd reported, „The so-called moderate Arab regimes – Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, as well as the Palestinian Authority – have limited their response to what can best be called lip-service condemnations of the Israeli attack.  And nothing more.  ‘The one responsible for the massacres is Hamas, and not the Zionist entity, which in its own view reacted to the firing of Palestinian missiles,‘ Nimr Hammad, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.  Similar remarks have been voiced in Cairo, Amman and Riyadh…“
                   Since it declared a unilateral end to the cease-fire in December, 2008, Hamas has never stopped firing rockets at Israel, which have numbered over 1,000 just in the last six months.  Since Hamas gained power in Gaza seven years ago, it has fired over 10,000 rockets.  Hamas has not only been raining down rockets on Israel, it also has been steadily widening the range and accuracy of its rockets.  While originally Hamas used more primitive rockets which went six miles before landing and exploding, now it launches rockets that are capable of going 24 miles before exploding, bringing 750,000 Israelis living in southern Israel within the rocket danger zone.  Hamas has also smuggled into Gaza from Egypt through a vast network of tunnels tremendous quantities of weapons for use against Israel.
                   So what is a reasonable definition of „proportionality?“  Since the rockets have never stopped and are fired at Israel every day, it is clear that the force used to date has not been adequate to achieve the goal: ending the daily rocket attacks on Israel.  Logic and rationality require that Israel increase the force used to achieve its goal.
                   The civilian residents of Gaza are not entirely innocent.  They voted to make Hamas their government in a free election, just as the Germans voted for Hitler in a democratic election.   The Times reports on January 5th two different responses by citizens of Gaza.  In one case, a woman whose family was decimated after Israel began its ground invasion, said, „May God exterminate Hamas.“  She understood who was responsible for the carnage.  Another woman quoted by The Times, whose family was cowering during the invasion without electricity or water, said about Hamas, „God bless these fighters.  They are throwing themselves to death to protect us.“  It is those fighters who send rockets into Israel to kill civilians who are responsible for the retaliation of the Israel Defense Force doing what it can to stop the rocketing.
                   The goal of Hamas is to expel all Jews who came to Historic Palestine, now Israel, after 1917, and then create a single, Islamic state.  They have said they will not recognize the State of Israel as a sovereign state.  They will not recognize as binding on them any prior agreements that the Palestinian Authority has signed with Israel.  They will continue to use violence to achieve their goals.
                   What the world has to do, and many do already, is understand that promises by Hamas that are not verifiable are worthless.  The ultimate answer is a two-state solution which both Israel and the Palestinian Authority have accepted.  In Israel there is a small minority opposed to two states.  They and their policies are rejected by the Israeli government.  In Gaza it is the Hamas government which has rejected the two-state solution and is actively pursuing violence to achieve its genocidal goals. Those living in Gaza are now reaping the consequences.

      Overview 
      1. This study examines how Hamas and the other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip make extensive use of Palestinian civilians as human shields. It shows how the terrorist organizations constructed a vast military infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, including a large arsenal of rocket and mortar shells used to target the southern Israeli population (in 2001-2008 more than 8,000 rockets and mortar shell were fired into populated Israeli areas). The terrorists‘ military infrastructure was hidden in and around civilian homes and dispersed to locations scattered around the Gaza Strip, home to an estimated more than 1.4 million people, one of the most densely populated areas on earth. 
      2. The calculated, cynical use of the civilian population as human shields is intended to decrease the vulnerability of Hamas and the other Palestinian terrorist organizations by affording them a kind of immunity from the IDF’s counterterrorism activities, since they are aware that Israel avoids harming the civilian population insofar as is possible. It is also intended to make it possible for Hamas and the other terrorist organizations to make political-propaganda gains in the battle for hearts and minds by representing Israel as operating against innocent civilians. The terrorist organizations‘ doctrine of using human shields was inspired by Hezbollah’s tactics in Lebanon and by the lessons they learned from the terrorist campaign they have been waging against Israel since 2000.  
      3. Today Hamas and the other terrorist organizations have approximately 20,000 arms-bearing operatives in the Gaza Strip with varying degrees of skills. They have light arms, anti-tank weapons, powerful explosive devices, and rockets and mortar shells. Their military infrastructure is situated in urban population locations (with Gaza City serving as the nerve center) and eight densely populated refugee camps throughout the Gaza Strip .
      

      4. Hamas and the other terrorist organizations copied and developed Hezbollah’s warfare doctrine, which is based on exploiting the civilian population as human shields. They adapted it to the unique conditions of the Gazan arena, which are topographically easier than those in south Lebanon . Using civilians as human shields is a war crime, a grave breach of the laws of armed conflict and a crime against humanity. Rockets and mortar shells are routinely fired from built up, densely populated areas and near structures and facilities (including educational institutions and mosques) provided special protection by the Geneva Conventions. In the scenario of an IDF incursion into the Gaza Strip, the terrorist organizations will use those urban and refugee camp settings as the focal points from which they fight.

      5. This study (completed during the first week of Operation Cast Lead) provides many examples of how Gazan civilians are used as human shields during terrorist attacks against Israel and combat against the IDF. The examples are based on Israel ’s accumulated experience in its combating terrorism from the Gaza Strip, including the first week of the Operation. The main findings are the following:

      i) Military and security personnel, facilities and installations are situated within dense population concentrations (including residential dwellings and public institutions, such as schools, mosques and hospitals): The military infrastructure attacked massively attacked by the IDF during Operation Cast Lead, includes terrorist operatives, weapons, and the facilities and installations themselves: headquarters, bases, offices, arsenals, tunnel and underground networks, lathes, workshops and bunkers. Constructing a vast security-military infrastructure within the civilian population exposes it to frequent „work accidents“ and puts it on the front line in the fighting when the Israeli security forces carry out counterterrorism activities or when there are violent internal Palestinian conflicts.

      ii) Rockets and mortar shells are fired at Israeli population centers from inside or close to private Palestinian residences and sometimes from educational institutions or mosques. The rocket launching squads deliberately situate their launchers near houses to camouflage themselves and to protect themselves from the IDF. The attacks carried out by the terrorists often disrupt the daily lives of the Palestinian population and endanger them. Sometimes rockets explode as they are being prepared for firing, and in some instances homemade Qassam rockets (whose technical quality is low) fall in the Gaza Strip instead of Israel and kill and wound local civilians.

      iii) The terrorists fight against the IDF from within residences and public institutions, and use ambulances to evacuate terrorist operatives from the battlefield: In Operation Cast Lead, terrorist operatives found refuge in facilities such as hospitals, educational institutions and mosques. In IDF operations carried out in recent years, including Operation Hot Winter in March 2008 and Operation Autumn Clouds in October 2006, the IDF often faced terrorist operatives fighting from within private residences and receiving support from civilians, including women and children, who patrolled and carried out intelligence missions. In some instances the terrorist operatives wore civilian clothing, making it difficult to distinguish between them and genuine civilians. During Operation Hot Winter the IDF found weapons hidden in a mosque in the Jabaliya refugee camp. During battles in the Al-Zeitun neighborhood in 2004, the terrorists used UNRWA ambulances to evacuate a wounded Palestinian and terrorist operatives. All are grave breaches of the laws of war and an exploitation of the special protection afforded to places of worship and medical installations and vehicles.

      iv) Civilians, including women and children, are deliberately used as human shields to protect terrorist operatives whose houses the organizations fear may be attacked by the IDF: During Operation Cast Lead and in many instances in the past, the terrorist organizations have exploited IDF warnings to civilians to evacuate their residences before attacks to send children and adolescents to the relevant locations, knowing the IDF will not deliberately attack civilians. Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya and many other Hamas leaders (such as Nizar Rayyan, killed in Operation Cast Lead) have openly boasted about their use of their human shield tactics.

      v) The terrorists hold military training, exercises and shows of fighting , important for improving their fighting skills and raising morale, in the midst of population concentrations (where the terrorists feel more secure than in exposed settings). They endanger the civilians‘ lives, disrupt their daily routines, expose them to various types of work accidents (random gunfire, explosions) as well as to IDF counterterrorism activities. The Gazans have often appealed to the terrorist organizations to stop such activities, but without success. Exercises and shows of fighting increased during the six month lull arrangement prior to Operation Cast Lead.

      vi) Women and children are used as human shields: The terrorist organizations sent 200 women to rescue dozens of operatives from the Nasser mosque in Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip during an IDF action in November 2006. The terrorists mingled with the women, exploiting the fact that the IDF would not fire indiscriminately at a large group of women, and escaped from the combat area. Moreover, during IDF combat in the Gaza Strip in the past, the IDF often found terrorist operatives shooting at them while surrounded by children and adolescents , sometimes on their own initiative and sometimes prompted by the terrorists (incidents well documented and presented below). Women and children are also used in logistic operations and to carry out terrorist attacks (collecting intelligence, smuggling weapons, suicide bombing attacks). Such tactics may be repeated during Operation Cast Lead.

      6. The civilian Gazan population pays a high price both with regard to personal injury and death (this study documents heavy civilian casualties caused by terrorist activity) and the severe disruption of their daily routines . Beyond the issue of using civilians as human shields, the entire Gazan population pays a heavy price for Hamas’s policy, because when Hamas took over the Gaza Strip in June 2007, it turned its more than 1.4 million Gazans into hostages of its radical Islamic ideology and attendant strategy. Hamas forced them into a situation of unending combat with Israel , a harsh confrontation with the Mahmoud Abbas’s Palestinian Authority, the deterioration of relations with Egypt and other Arab states, and isolation from the international community.

      7. The fundamental contradiction between the needs of the civilian population and Hamas’s policies is clearly manifested by the continuing attacks made by Hamas and the other terrorist organizations on the crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip, the lifelines for the Gazans, and by the difficulties imposed by Hamas on their operation. Although for years Hamas has tried to falsely represent the situation in the Gaza Strip as a humanitarian crisis and even a „holocaust,“ in effect it prefers carrying out terrorist attacks against Israel to caring for the basic interests of the Gazans. For the past few years the Kerem Shalom, Sufa, Karni, Nahal Oz and Erez crossings, through which fuel and other vital supplies are delivered to the Gaza Strip, have been repeatedly attacked with rocket and mortar shell fire as well as attempted mass-casualty and suicide bombing attacks. The rocket and mortar shell fire at the crossings continued during the six months the lull arrangement was in force. In addition, the terrorist organizations have publicly targeted the Ashqelon power plant, which provides the Gaza Strip with 65% of its electricity.

      8. In the past, Hamas’s use of civilians as human shields and its cynical and malicious disregard for their basic interests have led to harsh criticism from the residents of the Gaza Strip (even though Hamas makes an effort to minimize it in the media it controls), as well as the Palestinian Authority and Egypt . Hamas has ignored the internal and external criticism, refuses to change its policies and frequently exploits the shortages, poverty and suffering in the Gaza Strip as fodder for media campaigns attacking Israel , Egypt and the Palestinian Authority.

      9. During Operation Cast Lead , which began on December 27, 2008 , the IDF has carried out precise attacks on the military infrastructure established in the midst of the civilian population. The Israeli air strikes from the air and sea against Hamas (and other terrorist organization) targets situated in civilian locations are acceptable according to international law. They have been carried out because of the State of Israel’s need to afford security to its civilians and to ensure their welfare and basic right to life and safety in accordance with the principles of armed combat. For eight years Israeli citizens have been exposed to continual rocket and mortar shell fire, as well as other forms of terrorism, all originating with Hamas and the other terrorist organizations which control the Gaza Strip and operate from it .

      10. Hamas and the other terrorist organizations, for their part, carry out war crimes and crimes against humanity, both by the deliberate, indiscriminate firing of massive rocket barrages at civilian targets to sow terror, death and destruction, and by using the civilian population of the Gaza Strip as human shields. All of the above violate the basic principle of the distinction between combatants and non-combatants, which is one of the cornerstones of the laws of armed warfare. It is up to the international community to deal with the terrorist organizations and the countries which sponsor and support them (especially Iran and Syria ) with all the political and legal means they have at their disposal.

      11. The composition of this study began in the middle of 2008 and was completed at the end of the first week of Operation Cast Lead, with the beginning of the IDF land incursion into the Gaza Strip. The analysis of the use of civilians as humans shields and the many examples presented here are based on Israel’s experience in fighting against Hamas and other terrorist organizations controlling and operating in the Gaza Strip. It includes examples from the first week of Operation Cast Lead, but without a doubt it will have to be updated when the operation in the Gaza Strip ends.

Fieberhaft arbeiten die Terrorbanden daran, die Reichweite ihrer Waffen deutlich zu erhöhen – mit tatkräftiger Unterstützung aus dem Iran.

          Der Ton schwankt zwischen Verständnis und Ablehnung: Der Nahostkonflikt spaltet in Deutschland die Geister – die Debatte über das kompromisslose Vorgehen Israels geht quer durch die Parteien. Unionspolitiker ergreifen Partei für Jerusalem und halten das Vorgehen für alternativlos. Die SPD sieht die Schuld beim Westen.

           

          1. tah.de – SPD-Fraktionsvize: Israels Aktionen „nicht verhältnismäßig„ – Ramsauer verteidigt dagegen Vorgehen der Armee
             SPD-Fraktionsvize Walter Kolbow hat die israelischen Militäroperationen im Gazastreifen als „nicht mehr verhältnismäßig“ kritisiert. Zwar habe die Hamas den Waffenstillstand aufgekündigt und Israel daraufhin nur von seinem Selbstverteidigungsrecht Gebrauch gemacht, sagte Kolbow dem Fernsehsender N24. Nun sei aber ein Waffenstillstand nötig, um das Leid der Zivilbevölkerung zu bekämpfen. CSU-Landesgruppenchef Peter Ramsauer nahm Israel dagegen in Schutz und äußerte Verständnis für die Offensive.
             Israel könne „in dieser Situation nichts anderes tun als sich zu verteidigen“, sagte Ramsauer N24. Dagegen sei das Verhalten der Hamas im Gazastreifen „ausgesprochen zynisch“. Die Organisation verschanze sich gezielt in Kindergärten und Schulen und provoziere damit zivile Opfer, sagte Ramsauer.

          Nach rund 170 Raketen und Granaten allein zwischen dem 19. und 26. Dezember 2008, abgefeuert aus dem Gaza-Streifen, hatte die Israelische Regierung nicht nur das Recht sondern die Pflicht ihre Bürger vor weiteren Angriffen wirksam zu schützen. Bei diesen Raketen- und Granatangriffen handelt es sich um feige, hinterhältige Mordanschläge auf die hilflose israelische Zivilbevölkerung und angesichts der jetzt laufenden Diskussion frage ich mich, wie beispielsweise Russland, Frankreich, England, Deutschland oder andere arabische Staaten angesichts der Angriffe reagiert hätten…

          Für Russland lässt sich die Frage am Beispiel Georgiens einfach und nachvollziehbar beantworten. Wobei Russland was demokratische Traditionen und Menschenrechte angeht, ein erhebliches Defizit im Gegensatz zu Israel hat.
          
      16. LIZASWELT – Das „Kana-Massaker“ der Hamas?
          
          Es war abzusehen, dass irgendwann im Verlauf der Operation Gegossenes Blei der Tag kommen wird, an dem die Medien hierzulande endlich das Ereignis präsentieren, mit dem sie Israel endgültig des kaltblütigen Mordes an unschuldigen Zivilisten überführen zu können glauben. Nun scheint es so weit zu sein: Ein Angriff der israelischen Armee auf eine Schule der Vereinten Nationen in Djabalija im Norden des Gazastreifens hatte zwischen drei und 42 Tote – die Angaben schwanken erstaunlich stark – zur Folge. Der Fall scheint auf den ersten Blick klar: Bis zu 1.000 Flüchtlinge hielten sich in der Schule auf, die vom Uno-Palästinenserhilfswerk UNRWA betrieben wird, und wurden dort mit Decken, Essen und Trinkwasser versorgt, als die IDF ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste zur Attacke blies. Das zumindest haben palästinensische Journalisten Spiegel Online gegenüber behauptet. „Die Leute campieren in den Schulen, weil sie sich in Uno-Gebäuden sicher fühlen. Auf dem Dach sind mit großen blauen Lettern Markierungen angebracht, die auch aus großer Höhe zu sehen sind. Die Israelis wissen genau, wo die Uno-Schulen liegen. Wir übermitteln ihnen sogar die GPS-Daten unserer Gebäude.“ Das wiederum hat UNRWA-Sprecher Adnan Abu Hasna zum selben Medium gesagt. Und auch der Leiter der Uno-Vertretung in Gaza, John Ging, hat sich geäußert: „Niemand ist sicher im Gaza-Streifen. Alle hier sind terrorisiert und traumatisiert.“ Wer wollte also daran zweifeln, dass die israelische Armee da ein veritables Kriegsverbrechen begangen hat?

          Nachdem die Hamas den sechsmonatigen „Waffenstillstand“ mit Israel dazu genutzt hatte, Raketen mit größerer Reichweite zu entwickeln, schlugen am 30. und 31. Dezember letzten Jahres insgesamt fünf dieser Geschosse in Beer Sheva ein, einer 200.000 Einwohner zählenden Stadt im nördlichen Negev. Eine Rakete traf eine Schule, eine weitere einen Kindergarten. Die in Beer Sheva lebende Ruth Bracha hat auf ihrem Weblog bereits ausführlich über diese Terroranschläge berichtet [1], [2], [3]. Auch Tzion Godfrey, der aus West Virginia stammt und an der Ben-Gurion-Universität in Beer Sheva studiert, wurde Zeuge der Raketenangriffe. In einer am Silvestertag verfassten E-Mail an seine Freunde schildert Godfrey eindringlich, wie er mit den Attacken umgeht und warum er jetzt erst recht in dieser Stadt bleiben will.       18. LIZASWELT – Die Logik der Nahostexpertokratie
          
          „Nahostkorrespondent“ zu sein oder als „Nahostexperte“ gehandelt zu werden, ist ein höchst einträgliches Geschäft. Und es ist absolut krisensicher, weil die Krise da unten nie in die Krise gerät und es hier oben immer welche gibt, die hören oder lesen wollen, was die Gründe für die Krise sind. Wenn aus der Krise dann ein Krieg wird, was ziemlich oft der Fall ist, erfährt die Nahostexperterei sogar noch einen konjunkturellen Aufschwung, von dem fast alle anderen Berufszweige nur träumen können. Ausgesprochen vorteilhaft für die „Nahostkorrespondenten“ und „Nahostexperten“ ist dabei auch, dass sie den tiefen Teller nicht jedes Mal neu erfinden müssen. Es genügt, wenn sie ihrem Publikum das erzählen, was sie ihm schon immer erzählt haben und was es von ihnen auch erzählt bekommen will. Allenfalls müssen hin und wieder ein paar Details aktualisiert werden, aber das erledigen die Steinbachs und die Putzens, die Lüdersse und die Kühntopps, die Paechs und die Watzals ganz lässig zwischen Morgentoilette und Milchkaffee.

          * Erklärung zum Begriff „Fauxtography“ vorweg:
          Der weithin noch unbekannte Begriff Fauxtography bezeichnet die Manipulation von Bildern zu Propagandazwecken, aber auch die der dazugehörigen Bildunterschriften (engl.: Captures), also die Herstellung einer meist bewusst falschen Deutung, was den Zusammenhang zwischen Bild und Bildunterschrift betrifft. Traurige Berühmtheit erlangte dieser Begriff z.B. während des Libanonkrieges 2006, als ein eifriger Photoshop-Trickser namens Adnan Hajj, der als Freelancer für REUTERS arbeitete, mittels (plumper) technischer Betrugsversuche halb Beirut in Trümmer aufgehen ließ. Der SPIEGEL fälscht in diesem Fall zwar keine Bilder, aber er stellt die dazugehörigen Unterschriften in einen ideologischen Kontext, um Stimmung gegen Israel zu erzeugen. Das ist unfair und stellt inhaltlich gesehen auch eine Fälschung dar.

          „Friedensinitiativen und so genannte Friedens ideen oder internationale Konferenzen widersprechen dem Grundsatz der Islamischen Widerstandsbewegung. Die Konferenzen sind nichts anderes als ein Mittel, um Ungläubige als Schlichter in den islamischen Ländern zu bestimmen … Für das Palästina-Problem gibt es keine andere Lösung als den Jihad.           Die Reaktionen und Äußerungen der meisten westlichen Regierungen erinnert mich an etwas, das aus der Psychologie kommt. So lange die Juden beschossen werden, kümmert sich niemand. Aber in dem Moment, wo Israel zur Waffe greift, kommt der Reflex der pawlow’schen Hunde: „sofortiger Waffenstillstand“, „Einstellung der Kämpfe“, „unverhältnismäßige Gewalt“. Sind diese Regierungsleute wirklich so konditioniert? Derart von der puren Stimulation geleitet? Es sieht zumindest so aus. Die Tschechische Regierung nehme ich davon ausdrücklich aus.

          Welchen Krieg will die Welt Israel erlauben?
          Der sähe so aus: Erst einmal darf Israel überhaupt nichts tun, was einem Palästinenser nicht gefällt. Sollte es doch Militär einsetzen, dann dürfen die Palästinenser in ihrem Alltagsleben das nicht spüren. Sie müssen sich frei bewegen können. Die Terroristen müssen sich innerhalb dieser Deckung ungehindert bewegen können, damit die Zivilisten nichts geschädig t werden. Die israelischen Soldaten müssen sich erschießen lassen, statt die Terroristen zu bekämpfen, die sich zwischen den Zivilisten verstecken. Die Israelis haben dafür Sorge zu tragen, dass jeder Palästinenser gut versorgt ist, auch medizinisch bestens bedient wird, damit er seinen „Widerstand“ baldmöglichst wieder aufnehmen kann. Israel darf keine Luftwaffe einsetzen, weil selbst Präzisionswaffen zu viel Schaden anrichten. Israel darf keine Panzer einsetzen, weil das gegenüber den Terroristen unfair ist. Israel darf sich allerdings mit Infanterie in Hinterhalte begeben und seine Soldaten erschießen oder totbomben lassen. Sollten die Soldaten trotzdem einen Terroristen erwischen, dann muss der ihnen unversehrt in die Hände fallen und wie ein festgenommener Verdächtiger behandelt werden, der erst noch vor Gericht gestellt werden muss – er hat bis zum Urteil als unschuldig zu gelten. Und ein Urteil wird es nicht geben, weil der Terrorist ja ein politischer Gefangener ist, der unverzüglich frei gelassen werden muss, denn er wurde ja bei einem böswilligen Besetzungsversuch gefangen genommen.

          Die Legende, vielleicht ist sie sogar wahr, erzählt, der verstorbene Mathematiker Professor Haim Hanani habe seine Studenten beauftragt, eine Konstruktionszeichnung für eine Blut-Pipeline von Haifa nach Eilat zu entwerfen. Die gehorsamen Studen holten ihre Logarithmen-Tafeln heraus und skizzierten hochintelligente Pipelines. Sorgfältig planten sie die Route, bedachten die Topograpie, die Möglichkeiten der Korrosion, den Durchmesser der Pipeline und ihre Fließfähigkeit. Als sie ihre Ergebnisse vorlegten, lautete das Urteil des Professors: Durchgefallen. Keiner von euch fragte, wozu wir eine solche Pipeline brauchen, wessen Blut fließen soll und vor allem warum.

          Diese Woche sprach ich mit meinen Studenten im Rahmen einer Stunde über nationale Sicherheit über den Gaza-Krieg. Ein Student, der ziemlich konservative Ansichten geäußert hatte, überraschte mich. Der Journalist Gideon Levy hatte den Premierminister-Kandidaten damals gefragt, was er tun würde, wäre er als Palästinenser geboren worden, und Barak antwortete offen: „Ich würde mich einer Terrororganisation anschließen.“

          Jerusalem. Nach zehn Tagen Gaza-Krieg nimmt die internationale Diplomatie Fahrt auf. Die EU-Troika, bestehend aus Chefdiplomat Javier Solana, Außenkommissarin Benita Ferrero-Waldner sowie den tschechischen, französischen und schwedischen Außenministern, traf am Montag nach Gesprächen im ägyptischen Scharm el-Scheich in Jerusalem ein; dazu Frankreichs Staatschef Nicolas Sarkozy als Extra-Joker, um die europäischen Karten zu verbessern. Januar 2009 „Der wahre Holocaust findet in Gaza statt.“ Diese geschichtsklitternde Bemerkung zur Lage der Palästinenser im Gazastreifen stand im Mittelpunkt der Rede, die der notorische Holocaustleugner Mahmud Ahmadineschad vor einigen Tagen vor dem iranischen Parlament hielt. Irans Präsident habe mit seiner Ansprache, wie das Regierungsblatt „Iran Daily“ betonte, eine „wichtige Botschaft an alle Frieden suchenden Nationen gerichtet“.Die gleiche Begrifflichkeit verwendet seit geraumer Zeit auch die Hamas zur Beschreibung des Schicksals der im Gazastreifen eingeschlossenen Palästinenser. Der arabische Terminus für Holocaust „mahraka“ ist schon längst fester Bestandteil der Sprachregelung der Hamas und begegnet einem sowohl auf deren Internetseite als auch in ihrer Hauszeitung „Felesteen“ sowie in den Nachrichten ihres Satellitenfernsehens „Al-Aqsa“. In den Propagandaabteilungen in Teheran und Gaza freut man sich:

          Einige der wortgewaltigsten Israel-Kritiker haben geschrieben, auf jeden getöteten Israeli kämen einige Hundert getöteter Palästinenser. Eine solche Halbwahrheit ist oft schlimmer als eine Lüge.
          Nur – an dieser Aussage ist nicht einmal die Hälfte
          wahr. Es handelt sich vielmehr um eine bewusste Irreführung, und zwar aus dem Grund, weil der monate- und jahrelange Raketenbeschuss einer Zivilbevölkerung kein Gegenstand für blutige Gleichnisse ist.

          Als ich in Deutschland die ersten Nachrichten über Gaza sah und die Kommentare von Udo Steinbach und Marcel Pott hörte, hatte ich das Gefühl des „dèja vu“, das habe ich schon einmal gehört, diesen Film habe ich schon einige Mal gesehen. 
          Zurück in Wien erfuhr ich, dass der ORF auch wenig gelernt hat. Dr. Theodor Much musste den ORF belehren, dass die Hamas nicht israelische Siedlungen sondern israelische Städte, die innerhalb der grünen Linie, der Waffenstillstandslinien von 1949 liegen, mit Raketen beschießt. In dieser Frage scheint der ORF belehrungsresistent zu sein.

          In the fog of war, it isn’t just the truth that falls casualty. So does common sense. Quite a few pundits seem to think that Israel lacks a strategy in Gaza. But unlike the Lebanon war of 2006, this war has been planned in advance, and every stage has been war-gamed. Here is my read of Israel’s strategic plan, which lies behind „Operation Cast Lead.“
          Israel’s long-term strategic goal is the elimination of Hamas control of Gaza. This is especially the goal of the Kadima and Labor parties, which are distinguished by their commitment to a negotiated final status agreement with the Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas. The Hamas takeover in Gaza reduced Abbas to a provincial governor, who no longer represents effective authority in all the areas destined for a future Palestinian state. Hamas rule in Gaza is a bone in the throat of the „peace process“—one Israel is determined to remove.

          Seit gestern wird hier diskutiert, was der Hamas in diesem Krieg (denn das ist es) passiert. Gestern hat sich der Repräsentant der Hamas im Libanon lauthals beschwert, daß Teheran die Hamas im Stich läßt. Das ist ein Bruch der gemeinsamen Front und stellt geradezu eine Auflehnung dar. Er hat nichts über die Hisbollah gesagt, entweder weil er nichts zu sagen hat oder keinen Mut hatte – es läßt sich nicht leugnen, daß der von vielen erwartete Angriff der Hisbollah auf uns bisher ausgeblieben ist. Ehrlich gesagt, ich glaube auch nicht, daß er noch erfolgen wird, die Zeit läuft aus.

          Eigentlich haben seine arabischen Brüder ihn und den Rest der Hamas im Re gen stehen lassen. Es gab Kritik von Seiten der Fatach – das kann einen nicht verwundern, es sind ja Todfeinde. Auch die Ägypter und Saudis kritisieren die Hamas, und keiner lehnt sich so richtig heftig aus dem Fenster für die Hamas. Lippenbekenntnisse und Demos (überwiegend von Moslems) auf der ganzen Welt sind zwar schöne Zeichen, aber sie helfen der Hamas nicht wirklich, sondern betonen noch den Unterschied zwischen der „arabischen Straße“ und den arabischen Regierungen bzw Iran.

      A Cologne appeals court ruled on Tuesday that German-Jewish journalist Henryk Broder is allowed to describe the statements of fellow Jew Evelyn Hecht-Galinski as anti-Semitic.
      „Even German courts are beginning to understand that it is not enough to be Jewish in order not to be anti-Semitic,“ Broder told The Jerusalem Post by phone. He is in Israel, covering the Gaza war for Der Spiegel’s Web site.
      Hecht-Galinski equates Israeli policies with Nazi Germany’s, and has said that a „Jewish-Israel lobby with its active network is extended over the world, and thanks to America its power has become so great…“
      The appeals court overturned a regional court ruling barring Broder from labeling Hecht-Galinski’s statements as anti-Semitic without citing reasons for his assertions.
      Broder’s attorney Nathan Gelbart told the Post the ruling „is a victory for freedom of speech“ in Germany and „a victory over those hiding their anti-Semitism in pretended criticism of Israel’s policies.“
      The appeals court said Broder’s criticism of Hecht-Galinski contributed to a public discussion on Israel’s policies and was protected by free speech guarantees.
      Hecht-Galinski said Broder statements defamed her character.

      06. Januar 2009 Gaza sei ein Geschenk an Ahmadineschad, schreibt der in Iran geborene israelische Iran-Kenner Meir Javendafar in seinem Blog. Denn es lenke die Iraner von den wirtschaftlichen Schmerzen ab, die der vorgeschlagene Abbau der Energiesubventionen bedeute. Die Subventionen für Energie und Lebensmittel belasten den iranischen Staatshaushalt jedes Jahr mit 100 Milliarden Dollar. Davon muss die Regierung nun einen Teil einsparen.

      It is not clear who will run against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June election, but Mohammad Khatami, the reformist former president, has hinted that he may enter the race. Mehdi Karroubi, a former speaker of Parliament and a reformer, has said he will run.

       The Iranian website Press TV reports that senior Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Zahar is saying that the people of Palestine have no need for foreign help, and that he declares that victory is near.
       In an address on Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV, Al-Zahar said, „Victory is coming,“ and asserted that the Palestinians need no foreign help but the help of God to achieve victory.
       Also in his address, Al-Zahar criticized the European Union and United Nations, pitying them for their inability to pass a resolution to bring the Israeli offensive to an end.
       „With the help of God and the resistance of our people we will successes in defeating our enemy,“ he continued, urging Palestinians to stay united against Tel Aviv.
       The broadcast was his first since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on December 27.
       Blaming Washington for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Al-Zahar warned that White House policies would not alleviate the suffering in the Middle East but would lead to further violence in the region.

         Fewer than 100 people showed up on Monday in Nablus for a demonstration in solidarity with the Palestinians of Gaza. The lack of interest was not for lack of support for Hamas, but there is no sign of a third intifada, or uprising, despite Hamas‘ call for one. People also said they were intimidated by the Palestinian security forces of Mr. Abbas and his appointed prime minister, Salam Fayyad – forces subsidized by the U.S. and trained by Jordan – which have cracked down on a series of demonstrations.       1. Three IDF Soldiers Killed by Friendly Fire in Gaza – Hanan Greenberg
         Three IDF soldiers were killed and 24 others were injured on Monday in a friendly fire incident in Gaza when a tank fired a live round at a building in Jabalya in which IDF forces had taken cover. Col. Avi Peled, commander of the Golani Brigade, sustained minor injuries in the incident but refused to leave the scene until the last of his troops were evacuated. (Ynet News)

As long as it takes to get that undertaking, Israel will continue with this military operation. If Israel is perceived as not securing a victory that is bringing about an end to rocket attacks against Israel, that is not just a problem for Israel. Hamas is the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. That will hearten and embolden radical Islamic organizations in Egypt, in Jordan, and even in Europe. Therefore, denying Hamas its military goal of having the right of armed resistance against Israel by hitting Israeli civilians, that victory is essential for Israel and it is also essential for many of our allies abroad.       2. Jihadist Groups in Gaza: A Developing Threat – Yoram Cohen
         Since Hamas‘ 2007 coup in Gaza, a small coterie of other militant Islamist organizations has emerged. These Salafi-jihadist groups have grown in strength and appear increasingly inclined to act independently of Hamas leadership. They include Jaish al-Islam, Fatah al-Islam, Jaish Allah, al-Takfir, Lion’s Den of Jihad Fighters, and Jaljalat. Although they receive no directives from al-Qaeda, these groups identify with al-Qaeda’s ideology and model their tactics and strategy on that organization.          When Hamas, Hizbullah and Iran became leading players in the Middle East struggle, the land-for-peace game was suspended. The new game is not oriented toward a final agreement. The extremist groups believe in the eventual extermination of Israel. They’re not interested in a handshake on the White House lawn. The extremists‘ goal is to kill as many Jews as possible and wait for God (or Iran) to kill the rest. Israel’s goal is to restrain the brazenness of the extremists until their movement somehow burns itself out or is destroyed from within Arab society.          The equation of the actions of Hamas and Israel is disgusting. Imagine terrorist group A attacking country B, where A is trying to maximize civilian casualties on both sides and B is trying to minimize civilian casualties on both sides. What sort of moral judgment would have trouble distinguishing between the two? By taking on Hamas, Israelis deserve the gratitude of decent people everywhere. More than that, by sending in troops to fight them on the ground, Israel is risking its precious soldiers to minimize Palestinian casualties. These soldiers risk becoming martyrs to human rights because they are fighting in places where other countries, including the U.S., might have called in an artillery or air strike and been done with it.          Former top Middle East negotiator Dennis Ross said Sunday the U.S. should back a cease-fire in Gaza only if it ensures that Hamas „can’t rebuild.“ „If Hamas is left with the capability to rearm,“ he said, then the current conflict will have been „just a prelude“ to the next round. Ross said achieving an Israeli-Palestinian agreement now would be much different than his last attempt in 2000.              The head of Hamas‘ rocket unit, Ayman Siam, was believed killed Tuesday in an airstrike in Jabaliya in Gaza.

      2. Hamas Exploitation of Civilians as Human Shields (Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center)
             Hamas and the other terrorist organizations copied and adapted Hizbullah’s warfare doctrine, which is based on exploiting the civilian population as human shields.
             Using civilians as human shields is a war crime, a grave breach of the laws of armed conflict and a crime against humanity.
             Rockets and mortar shells are routinely fired from built-up, densely populated areas and near structures and facilities (including educational institutions and mosques) provided special protection by the Geneva Conventions.
             Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and many other Hamas leaders (such as Nizar Rayyan, killed last week) have openly boasted about their use of human shield tactics.

      3. Hamas Officials Hiding in Gaza Hospital Maternity Ward – Avi Issacharoff (Ha’aretz)
             Palestinian sources said senior Hamas officials have been spotted more than once wandering around the maternity ward of Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital and even using the hospital to hold press conferences, on the theory that it offers a safe haven from Israeli fire.
             For the same reason, Hamas forces have taken refuge near buildings that serve as headquarters for various international organizations, such as the Red Cross and the UN.

      4. Hamas Steals Aid Supplies for Its Own Hospital for Gunmen – Yaakov Katz (Jerusalem Post)
             Hamas has set up an independent hospital in Gaza to treat its wounded and is pilfering a significant portion of the medicine allowed into the Strip, senior defense officials said Monday.
             Nevertheless, the Defense Ministry said it would continue facilitating the transfer of food and medical supplies into Gaza since the humanitarian convoys play a key role in garnering international legitimacy for the IDF’s operations.

      5. Wounded Israeli Troops Yearn to Be in the Fight – Griff Witte (Washington Post)
             Sgt. Natan Weitzman was creeping through Gaza on Saturday night with his Israeli army platoon when a mortar shell landed in their midst.
             Hours later, his brother said, Weitzman was in the intensive care unit of Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba having shrapnel removed from his heart. „Even now, he says he wants to go back,“ his brother said.
             Weitzman’s desire to fight reflects a broader consensus in Israel that the offensive in Gaza against Hamas is necessary and just.
             There is little hand-wringing in Israel over whether putting troops in harm’s way is the right thing to do. It is widely accepted that Israel’s adversaries must be confronted with force.

             As fighting widens in Gaza, threats of an oil embargo against Israel’s friends by some in Iran and Bahrain are falling flat.
             Key Persian Gulf producers like Saudi Arabia are keeping quiet, reflecting a focus on their struggle to deal with the plunge in world oil prices.
         
          

   5. Observations:  
      

      1. Israel’s Gaza Surge – Editorial (Wall Street Journal)

         • In some sense, the ground incursion into Gaza can be understood as Israel’s version of the U.S.-Iraqi „surge“ in Iraq. The strategic question is larger than merely stopping Hamas missiles from landing in Israeli cities, though that is justification enough for Israel’s bombing and the ground operation. A nation like Israel, with enemies on all sides, must maintain an aura of invincibility if it is to have any chance at peaceful coexistence.
         • It was that aura after two wars that induced Egypt to agree to peace with Israel in the 1970s. By contrast, the 2006 Lebanon campaign convinced radical Arabs and Persians that Israel had grown soft and could be beaten. Israel can’t let Hamas maintain a similar mythology at the end of this operation, or the costs will be far higher down the road.
         • The Bush Administration has rightly given Israel the diplomatic cover it needs to pursue its war aims, amid the usual Arab, European and UN denunciations. Similar denunciations were of course never aimed at Hamas missiles fired at Israeli civilians. As Israel’s operation continues, the clamor will build for the U.S. to force Israel to stop short of defeating Hamas.
         • Much as Mr. Obama takes office in a stronger position thanks to the Iraq surge, his foreign policy would also benefit from Israeli success in Gaza. A Hamas humiliation would show Tehran that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s regional militarism has more costs than benefits.
         • The Israelis have done Mr. Obama a favor by striking back at Hamas before he takes office so President Bush can endure the usual global denunciations for U.S. support for Israel. But Mr. Obama will soon need to return the favor by showing Israel – and Iran – that he understands the U.S. stake in the success of Israel’s Gaza surge.

      In early September, I was invited to take part in a press conference in Oslo, along with the Israeli ambassador to Norway, members of the Norwegian media and members of the Norwegian parliament. The title of the press conference was „Iran: At Sderot’s Back Door.“
      It was at that press conference that „rocket reality“ was presented before Norwegians for the first time, showing the Western Negev as the only place in the Western world where rockets and missiles are fired at citizens on almost a daily basis. Of these attacks, 97 percent are launched by Palestinian militias from the convenient cover of civilian homes in Gaza. Their weapons come directly from Iran, with their delivery to Gaza facilitated by Syria and Egypt. This is how Hamas became Teheran’s „third arm,“ after Hizbullah in Lebanon.

      In den Nahost-Analysen der vergangenen Tage war oft von der Spaltung innerhalb der arabischen Staaten die Rede. Von den moderaten Regierungen, die ein Interesse daran haben, dass die Hamas geschwächt wird und der Iran an Einfluss verliert, während die Menschen auf der Straße empört sind über das Leiden palästinensischer Zivilisten. Tatsächlich geht diese Kluft auch durch Europa.
      Auf der einen Seite steht eine aufgeregte Medienöffentlichkeit, die die Militäraktion schon wenige Tage nach ihrem Beginn wieder beendet sehen will – und auf der anderen eine sich nur zaghaft vorwagende Politik, der klar ist, dass Israel einige Zeit benötigen wird, um die Hamas entscheidend zu schwächen. Damit Israels Bürger in Zukunft vor Raketen geschützt sind.

       Israeli hard-liners have warned for many years that any territory Israel vacates will be used to attack it. Now they can point to the Hamas missile that slammed into a bus stop in this port city Monday, killing a 39-year-old woman. It was fired from the Gaza Strip, which Israel gave up in 2005 and is now ruled by Hamas militants who reject the existence of the Jewish state. … Israelis who never thought they would be living under rocket fire prepared bomb shelters. Newspapers and TV stations displayed color-coded maps informing Israelis that they had 15, 30 or 45 seconds to reach cover after a warning siren goes off. In Ashdod malls, directions to the nearest shelters were posted.
       It’s called learning the hard way. After all, the same lesson was evident in 2006, when Hizbullah took advantage of the IDF’s 2000 retreat from its Lebanese cordon sanitaire to snuggle right up to the border and shoot off missiles. As the Hamas rockets improve, an ever-larger portion of Israel’s population comes under fire, now estimated between 700,000 and a million persons, with the number steadily growing. It’s only a matter of time until the rockets reach Tel Aviv, the country’s largest city, and Dimona, the site of its nuclear plant.

      Die Hisbollah hat sich bislang aus dem Konflikt in Gaza herausgehalten. Lediglich Solidaritätsbekundungen für die Hamas waren von der Hisbollah zu vernehmen. Der Hisbollah-Führer Hassan Nasrallah hat seine Kämpfer jedoch in Alarmbereitschaft versetzt.
      Während Israel in seinem Süden der Hamas zu Leibe rückt, hält sich die Hisbollah im Norden bisher aus dem jüngsten Konflikt heraus. Die radikale Schiitenmiliz im Libanon, gerüstet mit einem gut bestückten Raketenarsenal und erfahren im Krieg gegen Israel, unterstützt die Hamas und ruft zu Solidaritätskundgebungen auf. Doch dabei hat sie es bislang auch belassen, wohl aus Rücksicht auf ihre eigenen innenpolitischen Ziele – und aus Furcht vor Vergeltung Israels.
      Entstanden nach dem israelischen Einmarsch im Libanon in den 80er Jahren als Kampftruppe mit Unterstützung des Irans und Syriens, hat die „Partei Gottes“ seit dem Krieg 2006 mit Israel ihre politische Rolle im Libanon ausgebaut und ist seit 2008 an einer Allparteienregierung beteiligt. Dieser politische Einfluss wäre schnell gefährdet, würde das Land in einen neuen Krieg hineingezogen.

      Von Michael Borgstede In Tel Aviv 4. Januar 2009, 02:12 Uhr Die Popularität der radikal-islamischen Hamas im Gazastreifen sinkt. Als Widerstandsbewegung versucht sie nun, den verlorenen Grund wiedergutzumachen. Aber auch in Israel wachsen die Zweifel an der Strategie der Regierung
      Viele hatten schon nicht mehr daran geglaubt, dass die israelische Armee ihre Drohungen wahr machen und in den Gazastreifen einmarschieren würde. Seit Tagen standen mehrere Tausend Reservesoldaten an der Grenze zu Gaza bereit – doch der Marschbefehl kam nicht. Dafür schienen der Luftwaffe nach sieben Tagen langsam die Ziele auszugehen. 750 Ziele hatten die israelischen Kampfflugzeuge und Hubschrauber bis zum Samstag in Gaza zerstört. Es bedarf keiner besonderen Fantasie, sich auszumalen, was das für den gerade einmal 15 Kilometer breiten und 40 Kilometer langen Streifen Land bedeutet. Bisher haben die Angriffe nach palästinensischen Angaben 430 Menschen in Gaza das Leben gekostet, von den ungefähr 150 getöteten Zivilisten sind ein Drittel Kinder. Dennoch landeten jeden Tag weitere Raketen in Israel, der Hamas ist es sogar gelungen, die Reichweite der Geschosse zu erhöhen und bedroht nun die Städte Aschdod und Beerschewa.

      Riyadh, 30 Dec.  – A doctor in Saudi Arabia was able to stop the wedding of a five and 11 year-old whose family wanted to marry them to protect financial assets. „Thanks to the law that compels spouses to carry out blood analyses before marriage, we were able to stop a wedding with underage girls, among them a five year-old,“ said Hani Harsani, the doctor in charge of laboratory analysis in an interview with Saudi daily al-Watan.
      „Two sisters came to us accompanied by their parents to undergo pre-marital blood analyses. The first one was five, and the other 11 years-old. When we asked the mother why they wanted to do the tests, she told us that she wanted to marry the girls to cousins to preserve the family’s property rights.“

       In recent years, Campus Watch (CW) analysts have leveled a barrage of criticism against the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) as a bastion of groupthink for scholar-activists peddling a politicized agenda. CW’s current director, Winfield Myers, noted that its „reputation has been shattered by years of politicized scholarship, one-sided teaching, and bullying students.“ Jonathan Calt Harris, formerly with CW, called the organization a „hive of academic opposition to America, Israel, and, in the larger sense, rationalism itself.“ After years of responding to such criticism with cries of „McCarthyism,“ MESA just might be owning up to a few of its failures.
       The 2008 MESA conference, held in Washington, DC in November, consisted of 12 sessions over four days with more than 1,500 scholars and professionals in attendance.

       As the crisis in Gaza enters its second week, international diplomats are seeking a cease-fire. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called the situation „unacceptable“ and demanded that „regional and international partners [do more] to end the violence and encourage a political dialogue.“ Amnesty International has demanded that the United States pressure Israel to stop its aerial bombardment. European and Arab diplomats hope that other states — perhaps Syria and Iran — will pressure Hamas to agree to a cease-fire.It won’t work. Knee-jerk diplomacy — demanding a truce regardless of the cause of the fighting — does more to accelerate conflict than to resolve it.

    4. Jewish World Review – The So-called International Community

       Just for a lark, I decided to google „international condemnations of Hamas“ this morning. You can guess what came up, right? Naturally, searching for condemnations of Hamas, one finds only international condemnations of Israel. An Australian report noted that the „British Foreign Secretary David Miliband is calling for an urgent ceasefire, while Russia’s Foreign Minister says he’s told his Israeli counterpart to urgently halt the military action.“ The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, „strongly condemned Israel’s disproportionate use of force,“ as did Brazil. Indonesia called on all countries to „sever all forms of diplomatic and business ties with Israel.“ French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who currently holds the rotating chair of the European Union, did call upon Hamas to halt its rocket attacks but also censured Israel’s „disproportionate response.“

   Among recent criticism of Egypt in the Arab media was an unprecedented attack on Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu Gheith, in a public address by Sunni Lebanese cleric Sheikh Maher Hamoud.    In another attack, the Syria-based TV channel Al-Rai defamed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak with a poem by poet Nizar Qabbani that was aired as filler. In his poem, Qabbani compares Arab leaders to the pre-Islamic poet Antara bin Shaddad, considered a symbol of false Arab bravado. The poem is accompanied by images of Mubarak, and is part of a recent anti-Egypt media campaign. The film aired on January 3, 2009.    In October 2008, Moussa Abu Marzouq, deputy head of the Damascus-based political wing of Hamas, gave an interview to the Qatari daily Al-Raya [1] in which he expressed surprise at the UAE’s demand for sovereignty over the three islands Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Moussa, which have been in Iranian possession since the Shah’s era. Abu Marzouq’s statements sparked anger against Hamas; in one reaction, a columnist for the UAE daily, Al-IttihadMuhammad Khalfan Al-Sawafi, [2] extrapolated from Abu Marzouq’s statements that Hamas’s claim to Palestinian territory could likewise be questioned, and that the agendas of Hamas and Iran were political rather than religious.

   Masked woman clad in explosives belt: „I, the martyrdom-seeker Umm Suheib, have dedicated myself for the sake of Allah, and for the sake of redeeming my family, from which I have lost eight martyrs so far. I swear by Allah that I will turn my body parts into a fire that will burn the occupation soldiers, if they move towards my house.
   „My beloved people, if Allah supports you, no one will be able to overcome you. We are confident of the support of Allah. There are thousands of martyrdom-seeking women like me, waiting for the occupier, in order to avenge these massacres. I pledge to my people that I will continue on the path of my family, and avenge the widows and the orphans. My people on the front-line, do not wait for any Arab president or king, but direct your appeal to Allah, the King of Kings. We are loyal to our oath, and will meet, Allah willing, in the paradise of eternity.“

4. MEMRI BLOG – Assad: Israelis Didn’t Learn From Lebanon 2006
   Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad said today, during a joint press conference with his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy, that war crimes are being perpetrated in Gaza.
   He clarified Syria’s position to Sarkozy – namely, that a solution for Gaza means an immediate cessation of the barbaric aggression and shooting, an immediate withdrawal from Gaza, and the removal of the blockade on it, as the conditions for a genuine ceasefire.
   Assad said that Israel had not learned its lesson from the 2006 Lebanon war, when it wanted to uproot the resistance, which said was not an organization that could be dismantled, a person that could be assassinated, or a weapons store that could be destroyed, but a form of thought that is expanding.
   He also said that Syria still adhered to its call to convene an Arab summit, and that a limited summit could also be convened (see „Report: Limited Arab Summit Of Moderate Countries“).

5. MEMRI BLOG – Bahrain To Investigate MP Who Compared Shi’ites To Zionists
   The Bahrain Justice Ministry has ordered an investigation against Salafi MP Jassem Al-Sa’idi and has banned him from giving sermons, after he said in a Friday sermon that some Shi’ites in Bahrain were like the Zionists and called them „sons of Zionists in Bahrain.“
   Sa’idi explained that he had been referring to Shi’ites who planned to carry out terror operations in Bahrain.

6. MEMRI BLOG – Mauritanian Recalls Ambassador From Israel
   Mauritania has recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv for consultation, in protest against the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
   A number of parties demanded that Gen. Ould Abdelaziz, head of the country’s ruling Supreme National Security Committee, cut off relations with Israel, but sources in the political system say that Abdelaziz does not think that conditions are right for such a move.

7. MEMRI BLOG – Egyptian Mufti: Israel Perpetrating ‚New Holocaust‘
   During a visit to wounded Palestinians in Egyptian hospitals, Egyptian Mufti Ali Gum’a said that the Israeli attack on Gaza was the blackest point in the history of mankind, calling it a „new Holocaust and worse than the Nazis‘ massacre of Jews – which was condemned by all humanity.“

8. MEMRI BLOG – Report: Limited Arab Summit Of Moderate Countries
   The Qatari daily Al-Arab reported, citing high-level Egyptian sources, that there is a trend among the moderate Arab countries to convene a limited Arab summit in Riyadh with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the leaders of the GCC member countries, „with the aim of stopping the massacre in Gaza.“
   According to the report, Syria and Qatar, which called for an emergency Arab summit, will not be participating.

10. MEMRI BLOG – ‚Al-Hayat‘ Columnist: Israel Has No Right To Exist
    In his column in the London daily Al-Hayat, Jihad Al-Khazen called Israel a Nazi state with no right to exist in the Middle East.
    He said that many Israelis, including Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni, were again supporting transferring the Palestinians, and that therefore Israelis who came to Israel after its establishment must be required to return to the countries from which they had come.
    He added that Israel’s extremism was causing Arab peace seekers like himself to demand that the Arab peace initiative be withdrawn.

    Hassin Rajabi, director of the Iranian interest office in Cairo, has given Egyptian foreign ministerial aide Hassin Hureidi a letter from Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki to Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu Al-Gheit.
    The letter invites Egypt to join with Iran to establish a field hospital on the Egypt-Gaza border.

13. MEMRI BLOG – Syrian FM: Negotiations With Israel Conditional Upon Israeli Inaction
    Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Mu’alem said, after meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, that the condition for indirect Syria-Israel negotiations is that Israel not initiate any military operation in Gaza or in the West Bank.
    Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who also met with Al-Mu’alem, said after also visiting Egypt and Jordan that Ankara’s proposal for a solution to the Gaza crisis included a Hamas-Israel ceasefire and an end to the internal Palestinian schism.

16. MEMRI BLOG – PA Official: ‚Abbas Agrees Under Pressure To Lead Delegation To NY
    An official in Ramallah, Palestinian Authority, has told the London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that PA President Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) has agreed reluctantly and under Arab pressure to lead a delegation of Arab foreign ministers to New York.
    The delegation is scheduled to arrive today.
    When asked whether the PA had plans or initiatives for a ceasefire, the official, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: „There is no initiative. We shall postpone the discussion of the details. The important thing is to stop the aggression.“
    He denied the existence of French, Turkish, Syrian or Qatari initiatives, and said that Hamas, which expected the intervention of a strong state, „has erred in its calculations and has resorted to Egypt seeking a political exit now. „

    In a speech, Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamed bin Khalifa Al-Thani called the attack on Gaza a „war crime“ and stated that anyone calling for a reciprocal Israel-Hamas ceasefire is equating a war criminal with a victim by justifying the aggression and the siege.

   Köln (islamrat.de). In einer Pressemitteilung vom heutigen Tag verurteilte der Vorsitzende des Islamrats für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Ali Kizilkaya, die fortwährenden Luftangriffe und Bombardierungen der Stadt Gaza und sprach von einem „beispiellosen Verstoß gegen die Grundsätze des Völkerrechts“. Kizilkaya forderte die Bundesregierung auf, „alles in ihrer Macht stehende zu unternehmen, um dem Blutvergießen ein Ende zu bereiten“.

   (dpa) Die Bilder der großen Nachrichtensender gleichen sich: Israelische Soldaten, die voll ausgerüstet mit Nachtsichtgeräten im Dunkeln ohne jegliche Gegenwehr in den Gazastreifen vordringen; weiße Rauchwolken am Himmel über Gazastadt. Den Schrecken des Krieges vermitteln diese Bilder nicht und sie können es auch nicht, da Israel den Gazastreifen für internationale Medienvertreter gesperrt hat. Eine unabhängige Berichterstattung wird damit massiv behindert. Doch über Blogs, Videos im Internet und über Anrufe vor Ort lässt sich der Schrecken zumindest erahnen. Ein wackliges Video auf der CNN-Bürgerjournalismus-Webseite ireport.com, auf der weitgehend ungeprüftes Material von Zuschauern oder Betroffenen einstellt wird, zeigt Tote und Verletzte nach einem angeblichen israelischen Angriff. Jugendliche liegen mit schmerzverzerrtem Gesicht am Boden neben verkohlten Leichen. Helfer versuchen, zwischen den Leichen noch Überlebende zu finden. Ein Vater mit seinen kleinen Kindern im Arm flüchtet vom Ort des Schreckens. Ob es sich dabei wirklich um einen aktuellen Angriff oder älteres Material handelt, lässt sich allerdings nicht feststellen.
