  2. THE JERUSALEM POST Don’t turn Iran’s Jews into a political football  RAFAEL MEDOFF , THE JERUSALEM POST
Are 25,000 Jews living happily and securely under the most repressive and anti-Semitic regime in the world?
Apparently the answer is yes, if one is to believe New York Times columnist Roger Cohen, who in a February 23 op-ed reports that what he saw recently in Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Iran demonstrated „Iranian civility toward Jews.“
Cohen was especially impressed by the fact that „there are more than a dozen synagogues in Teheran,“ as well as several more in Esfahan. He attended a prayer service and described it in rather picturesque terms.
Cohen is hardly the first American to be misled by the existence of synagogues in totalitarian countries. Assessing the status of Jews in Nazi Germany in October 1936, president Franklin D. Roosevelt likewise put too much stock in the scenes at the synagogues. „I have just seen two people who have toured through Germany,“ FDR told American Jewish Congress leader Stephen Wise. „They tell me that they saw that the synagogues were crowded and apparently there is nothing very wrong in the situation [of Germany’s Jews] at present.“

  5. THE JERUSALEM POST  Tougher EU sanctions loom for Iran  Benjamin weinthal, jerusalm post correnspondent, berlin ,
A German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday that France, Britain and Germany – the EU-3 – are „considering further sanctions“ against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
She said that Teheran could „count on“ a new round of penalties if the regime maintained its „uncompromising“ position with respect to its refusal to suspend its nuclear uranium enrichment program.
The Financial Times reported on Thursday that the EU-3’s sanctions list targeted 34 Iranian institutions and 10 individuals with connections to Iran’s atomic and biological weapons programs. The firms named in the Times report are Iran Insurance company, Iran Space Agency, Razim Institute for Serum and Vaccine and the construction company Khatam al-Anbia, which is linked to the Revolutionary Guards.

    4. ACHGUTJohn Rosenthal: Dialogue on the Holocaust – did it really happen?
Schröder’s trip to Iran represents that nec plus ultra of Germany’s much-vaunted „dialogue model,“ which is supposed to compare so favorably to the well-known intransigence of the erstwhile American administration. It is, as if, Ahmadinejad and Larijani, on the one hand, and Schröder and Steinmeier, on the other, were having a „dialogue“ on whether or not the Holocaust occurred. Moreover, the outcome of this „dialogue“ – or whether there even is an outcome – appears to be irrelevant to the continued pursuit of German-Iranian cooperation. „The relations between Tehran and Berlin are too important to be overshadowed by a subject such as the Holocaust,“ Iranian Ambassador to Berlin, Aliresa Sheikh-Attar, was reported as saying by the German state news agency Deutsche Welle. Apparently, Tehran’s German interlocutors agree.

  7. INSS Insight No. 96, February 23, 2009 The IAEA February Reports on Iran and Syria   Asculai, Ephraim
On February 19, 2009, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general (DG) delivered to the constituent membership two periodic reports, on Iran’s nuclear program and on the progress in assessing Syria’s activities at the bombed site of al-Kibar, prior to September 2007. They both merit comments on their findings.
    Iran
The outstanding finding of the report on Iran is that it has so far produced around one ton of enriched uranium hexafluoride to the level of around 3.5 percent – Low Enriched Uranium (LEU). By achieving this, Iran moved a step closer to the capability of further enriching the LEU to High Enriched Uranium (HEU) and producing some 25 kilograms of HEU, sufficient for one nuclear explosive device according to IAEA definitions.

  24. MEMRI IRANIAN MEDIA BLOG –   In Friday Sermon, Rafsanjani Says Military Weapons Have No Room In Iran’s Nuclear Program – And We’ll Prove It In Talks

Interim Tehran Friday prayer leader Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said in his sermon today that Iran is ready to prove in talks that military weapons have no room in Iran’s nuclear program.
He told worshipers, „Absolutely, manufacture of military weapons has no position in Iran’s nuclear program. We are ready to prove the issue in talks,“ Rafsanjani, who is also Assembly of Experts chairman, Expediency Council chairman, and former president, said, „Those listening to this sermon should know that we do not wish to divert our nuclear program towards military side and we are ready to prove the issue in talks“
He continued, „If you have good intention towards talks, so do not seek pretexts. Talks should be long, constant, and logical, while being free of any threat, intimidation and warning so that we can reach a point that is fact. I tell you for sure that in Iran’s nuclear program there is no room for manufacture of military weapons. Those are you who insinuate the wrong concept to the world public opinion and minds; don’t do that. You terrify the region; that’s not to anybody’s interest.“
Commenting on the recent report on Iran by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director Mohammad ElBaradei, Rafsanjani said that the report had a double standard and was not good. „Despite announcing that there is no reason for Iran going after military works, the report continued to leave the ambiguity why Iran does not implement the Additional Protocol?“
He added, „We have not signed the Additional Protocol and have neither given any commitment.“
Elsewhere in his address, Rafsanjani asked the Russians to make good on their promise with regards to the Bushehr nuclear power plant. „Russians and others too should know that Iran has reached some point as showed in uranium enrichment and satellite launching to the space. If they do not come, we will be able to complete it ourselves; But they should fulfill their promise.“
He then welcomed the Palestinian groups‘ agreement to form a national unity government: „Based on news available, Hamas, Fatah and Islamic Jihad agreed to form a national unity government; the move can be source of happiness.“

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today that Iran’s absolute and principled policy is based on expansion of relations with the neighboring and Muslim states.

He told visiting Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmad Al-Khalifa: „The Islamic Republic of Iran sides with all the friendly and brother countries of the region, believing that friendship and fraternity should be promoted day by day. The Islamic Republic of Iran considers Bahrain’s progress and dignity as its own.“

Ahmadinejad added that Iran has always favored expansion of solid relations with Bahrain and will remain so in the future either, and added, „Enemies of the two nations are not willing to see our brothers in the region, including Iran and Bahrain, have good friendly and good-neighborly based relations.“

The Bahraini minister, for his part, said that Iran-Bahrain relations are consolidated and in line with interests of the two nations.

In response to criticism from senior conservative officials and from the media close to them, i.e. that his statements were sacrilege against the Koran and an insult to the religion and to the „rule of the jurisprudent,“ Shabestari said that he had made the statements within a scientific, philosophical discussion and that the attacks on him were aimed at restricting freedom of debate in advance of the presidential elections.

In addition, Student Basij members attacked the office of the Islamic student union at the university, which had hosted Shabestari, and the university administration ordered the offices closed.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency report of February 20, 2009, Iran has in its possession 1,010 kg of low-grade enriched uranium, which, says the U.S. State Department, will allow it to produce an atom bomb.
The report demanded that Iran implement the Additional Protocol (permitting snap inspections by the IAEA); that it stop construction of the IR-40 heavy water facility at Arak and stop producing fuel for it; that it permit inspectors to enter the other facility at Arak, which cannot be observed by satellite; and that it permit the IAEA access to documents and to elements that are highly knowledgeable in Iran’s nuclear program.
Iranian representative to the IAEA Ali-Asghar Soltaniyeh said that there is no evidence that Iran is producing banned weapons, and that it would continue with its nuclear program.
The Iranian daily Jomhouri-e Eslami called the IAEA’s demands unacceptable, and said that they proved that its director Mohamed Elbaradei was a tool of U.S. President Obama and that Obama had no intention of changing U.S. policy.
At a February 21 meeting with Majlis spokesman Ali Larijani, former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder supported Iran’s proposal to the U.S. to establish an international nuclear consortium to enrich uranium on Iranian soil.
