FNA – Iranian-German Businessmen to Discuss Join Ventures
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian and German industry managers will discuss ways to boost bilateral industrial ties in a business forum to take place in Dusseldorf in the near future, Iranian ambassador to Berlin announced.
Representatives of around 200 German companies and numerous Iranian industrial managers will discuss ways to further boost bilateral industrial ties, especially in the sphere of steel and automobile, Iran’s Ambassador to Berlin Ali Reza Sheikh Attar was quoted by the Islamic republic news agency as saying on Monday.
The Dusseldorf forum is organized by the influential German Near and Middle East Association (NUMOV) whose chairman is former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
Schroeder visited Iran in February and met with Iranian officials, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad where he reiterated Berlin’s interest in expanding relations with Iran.
Sheikh Attar also underlined that studying joint investment opportunities, increasing bilateral trade volume and cooperating in area of common markets in places like Iraq, Latin America and Afghanistan will be on the forum’s agenda.
Despite western sanctions, German exports to Iran surged 10 percent to reach around four billion Euros last year as the two country’s trade flourished in 2008.
The expanding bilateral business ties between Tehran and Berlin come amid fierce political pressures by Germany’s powerful pro-Israeli lobby to force Berlin to cut its traditional trade links with Iran over the Iranian nuclear program.
Iran is under three rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West’s calls to give up the right of uranium enrichment, saying the demand is politically tainted and illogical.
Meantime, German companies have stepped up their criticism of the German government for backing UN financial sanctions against Iran, saying their business interests have been severely affected by this controversial political move.
Several German companies are involved in major Iranian infrastructure projects, specially in the petrochemical sector, like Linde, BASF, Lurgi, Krupp, Siemens, ZF Friedrichshafen, Mercedes, Volkswagen and MAN.
Some 50 German firms have their own branch offices in Iran and more than 12,000 firms have their own trade representatives in the country. -

JP – German firms to attend Teheran oil show – BENJAMIN WEINTHAL
Three days after the German government decided to boycott the UN’s Durban II conference in Geneva, The Jerusalem Post has learned that German companies have representatives attending Iran’s 14th International Exhibition of Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Industries taking place in Teheran this week. There are conflicting reports about German government funding for the trade show. According to Nadine Gold from the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry, the Economics Ministry is funding „an association exhibit“ with German firms at the oil show.
A German government spokesman, however, told the Post that the „trade show is not being sponsored“ this year. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s administration has not funded trade shows in Iran since last year, he said.
The Iran Oil Show Web site shows a list of companies, including a large number of German ones, that were present at the 2008 trade event in Teheran, but has not updated the list for 2009.
Ruth Rogers, a spokeswoman for the British company Orient Exhibitions Ltd., which is listed on the Web site as the organizer of the show, told the Post that a list of firms at the 2009 event would „appear on the Web site at the end of May.“
She said it was Orient’s „company policy“ to not publish the names of the companies at this stage.
German firms frequently do not make their ties with the Islamic country public, to protect their reputations.
Many Western energy companies, including France’s Total, were attending the show, the Middle East Newsline Web site reported. The exhibition attracted a record turnout of 450 foreign companies – 25 percent more than in 2008 – including five unidentified US firms, the organizers said, according to the site. -

JTA – Measure to extend Iran sanctions introduced
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The U.S. Congress introduced a bipartisan measure to place U.S. sanctions on companies helping to supply Iran with gasoline.
The Iran Diplomatic Enhancement Act, introduced Tuesday in the House of Representatives by Reps. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), would extend sanctions to suppliers, brokers, insurers and tankers carrying gasoline to Iran. The bill also would apply to companies that build refineries in Iran.
The congressmen said that such sanctions address a critical vulnerability because Iran lacks refining capacity and must import 40 percent of its gasoline.
In a news release, Kirk and Sherman said nearly all of Iran’s imported gasoline is provided by five European companies — the Swiss firm Vitol, the Swiss/Dutch firm Trafigura, the French firm Total, the Swiss firm Glencore and British Petroleum — as well as the Indian firm Reliance. The majority of tankers carrying gasoline to Iran, they said, are insured by Lloyds of London.
„We should use every conceivable lever within reach to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power and to halt its support of international terrorism,“Sherman said. „Iran’s need to import a significant portion of its gasoline is among the best levers we have at our disposal.“
Sherman and Kirk said a bipartisan group of more than 20 lawmakers already had signed on to co-sponsor the bill.-
BUNDESTAG – Karl-Otto Sattler – Verstoßene der Gesellschaft – MENSCHENRECHTE – Minderheiten im Irak und Iran leiden unter Verfolgung und Repressalien
Zwei Staaten, zwei Welten.
Doch was tun? -
IRANPRESSWATCH – In Iran, ‘crackdown‘ on Christians worsens
Editor’s Note: Reports are emerging from Iran of heightened persecution of Christians. For decades, the largely Armenian Christian community has suffered a fate similiar to that of the Baha’is. Monitoring, arrests, torture, closure of religious centres are frequent following the conversion of a large number of Muslims to Christianity.
In Iran, ‘crackdown‘ on Christians worsens
(CE) Two Christian women are being detained by Iranian security forces as „anti-government activists,“ according to International Christian Concern, a human rights organization based in Washington. The imprisoned women reportedly are in ill health.
A Pentecostal church in Tehran has been ordered closed and three Iranian Christian men have been declared guilty of cooperating with „anti-government movements,“ according to Compass Direct News of Santa Ana, Calif., which provides reports on Christians worldwide who are persecuted for their faith.
In an overview of persecution in Iran, International Christian Concern stated: „Iranian officials have dramatically increased their persecution of Christians following the conversion of a large number of Muslims to Christianity. Last year alone, 50 Christians were arrested for practicing their faith, some of whom were tortured. There have also been reports that Christians died due to the torture they were forced to endure.“ -
ROOZ – The Death Penalty
According to reports by Amnesty International, at least 346 people received the death punishment in Iran in 2008. This makes Iran the country with the second highest number of court-ruled death cases in the world. China occupies the first position with 1718 capital punishment cases. But if one considers the populations of these two countries, then Iran leads the world in deaths per capita, and China follows suit.
The AI report says that eight of those executed in Iran had committed crimes before they had reached the age of 18. The methods used to execute the court orders in Iran were hanging by rope and stoning, which are inhuman. One can add to the comments made in the AI report that in most countries that support the capital punishment, there are continuous efforts through scientific quarters to find ways to reduce the pain caused to those who face such a fate. In Iran however, the case is just the opposite and the proponents of the death penalty are in continuous search for ways to increase the pain that the person facing death will bear, and add physical and psychological torture as well. Carrying out executions in public is one such example, which was decided last year with the purpose of adding torment to the victim and arousing zeal among those watching the event.
While the political atmosphere in Iran is dangerous and costly for human rights activists, human rights groups in the country continue to voice their protests against such practices by providing information to relevant international organizations. So the Iranian government is under pressure regarding this not only from international groups, but also domestic human rights activists whose aim is to end this practice altogether.
The Iranian government occasionally tries to respond to these protests and thus reduce the pressures from the international bodies. In some cases official spokespeople of the Islamic Republic have stressed that these acts are sanctioned by the criminal laws of the country which are based in religious principles, or that the executions are carried out because of the calls by the families of the victims of the crime. These spokespersons portray the image as if execution is only for the most serious homicide criminals. The reality is quite the contrary. The provisions of the criminal law of Iran also apply to those who have not shed blood and who have not trespassed on the rights of others. They include those who hold different religious or sexual orientations, which may result in the death penalty.

IRAN PRESS NEWS – You can have an Opinion but are not Free to Express It – Iran Press Watch: The Baha’is
Editor’s Note: The following essay by European Foundation for Democracy was published on Monday, March 16, 2009, and is reprinted here for our readers‘ benefit.
Iran: Where you can have an Opinion but are not Free to Express It
The hatred of the Shiite state clergy for the Bahai assumes greater proportions every day. The Bahai are not permitted to disclose their identity publicly and have been banned as a subject in society for 30 years. They are not allowed to study at university, to have their administration, to hold their own meetings. Even their graves are destroyed on orders by the state authorities.
On 20 February 2009, Rasa news agency reported on the hate tirades of Semnan’s Friday imam, Hojjatu’l-Islam Siyyid Muhammad Shah-Cheraqi, the representative of the Iranian leader in the city of Semnan. In Shah-Cheraqi’s words: „[…] every Muslim must avoid dealing with the followers of this sect and avoid marriage with these people outside the law. If the people of Iran arise, then in the same way that we toppled the Pahlavi regime, we can stamp out the Bahai from their roots in this country.“ [see http://www.iranpresswatch.org/2009/02/the-verdict-of-the-imam-jumih-of-semnan/]
Such positions are not represented only by an unknown state cleric from Semnan. Fars News reported on 15 February 2009 that Ayatollah Qorbanali Dori-Najafabadi, Iran’s senior prosecutor, had banned all activities of the Iranian Bahai „at all levels“ and that he had declared as „illegal“ any form of assembly by the Bahai. Dori-Najafabadi argues that Articles 20 and 23 of the Iranian Constitution guarantee freedom of opinion of Iranians and that while every Iranian may have an opinion not every opinion may be expressed because confusion may arise if someone contradicts other positions.-
REUTERS UK – Ebadi team denied access to U.S.-Iranian reporter
TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran’s Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi has agreed to help defend a U.S.-born journalist jailed for spying but prison officials refused to let a member of her team see Roxana Saberi on Sunday, an Ebadi aide said.
Lawyer Abdolfattah Soltani, a member of Ebadi’s defence group, could not visit Saberi for a first meeting in Tehran’s Evin jail even though a court had given its permission, spokeswoman Narges Mohammadi told Reuters.
Mohammadi initially said it was Ebadi who went to Evin, but she later said it was Soltani who had tried to see Saberi on behalf of the defence team.
„They didn’t let him visit her,“ she told Reuters.
She was speaking a day after Saberi’s father said his 31-year-old daughter had called to say she was on a hunger strike and would continue to refuse food until she was released.
The freelance journalist was sentenced to eight years in jail on April 18 on charges of spying for the United States, in a verdict that could complicate Washington’s efforts towards reconciliation with Iran after three decades of mutual mistrust.
The defence lawyer who so far has handled her case, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, said on Saturday he had appealed the sentence. He had previously said he believed Ebadi would help in the appeals process.
Mohammadi said Saberi’s father, Reza, had come to Ebadi’s office on Saturday and appointed a team of three lawyers led by the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. -

PR-INSIDE – Im Iran verurteilte US-Journalistin tritt in Hungerstreik

DEUTSCHE WELLE – Ahmadinedschaft schlägt weichere Töne an
Luxembourg, April 27 (DPA) European Union foreign ministers Monday called on Iran to respond positively to the US‘ recent diplomatic overtures and help find a negotiated solution to the nuclear standoff.
„The EU warmly supports the new direction of US policy towards Iran, which opens a window of opportunity for negotiations on all aspects of Iran’s nuclear programme,“ ministers said in a joint statement issued during talks in Luxembourg.
The EU calls upon Iran to seize this opportunity to engage seriously with the international community in a spirit of mutual respect,“ ministers said.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has so far offered only tepid responses to US President Barack Obama’s calls for dialogue, and the EU’s top diplomats warned Monday that relations between Iran and their 27-member bloc would depend on Tehran engaging „seriously with the international community.“
Iran is suspected of trying to equip itself with nuclear weapons through a uranium enrichment programme which Ahmadinejad insists is only for civilian use.
Mirek Topolanek, the outgoing prime minister of the Czech Republic, recently accused the EU of „underestimating“ Iran’s nuclear threat.
EU foreign ministers responded to Topolanek indirectly Monday by insisting that „Iran’s nuclear programme remains a matter of grave concern for the international community“.
The Czech Republic currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, but Topolanek’s government was toppled by a no-confidence vote last month, and a caretaker government is now due to take office in early May.

RIA NOVOSTI – Israelischer Minister schildert Weg zum Stopp von Irans Atomplänen
MOSKAU, 27. April (RIA Novosti).

MEMRI IRANIAN MEDIA BLOG – Iranian Website: Ahmadinejad Doesn’t Recognize Two-State Vision
The Iranian website Asr-e Iran stated that the Western media had distorted statements by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in an April 26 interview on ABC TV, that „Iran would agree to any decision made by the Palestinians,“ as meaning agreement to the „two-state vision“ and recognition of Israel.
The website stated that the distortion of Ahmadinejad’s words was aimed at weakening Iran’s status among the Arabs who see it as supporting Palestinian rights.
It should be noted that during the interview, Ahmadinejad said that „the Palestinian people has the right to decide its own fate“ by means of a referendum held amongst all Palestinians worldwide, not only residents of the Palestinian territories.
Under this Iranian solution, the Jews in Israel could participate in the referendum only if they had lived in pre-1948 Palestine.
