The new sanctions proposed by the U.S. government, and reportedly accepted by the other permanent members of the UN Security Council-Britain, China, France, and Russia-will make it harder for Iran to get arms and slightly more difficult for it to get foreign investment. It is a step forward, a good thing, but a step too small and too slow.
At this stage of the process, U.S. efforts hardly match Iran’s determination to obtain nuclear weapons. Many will argue that this is the best outcome the Obama Administration could get with its approach. Perhaps true, but this shows the strategy is a problem….

wjc – Concern over exclusion of Russian missile system from Iran sanctions
Concern has been expressed in several quarters that the latest proposed set of sanctions against Iran do not include ground to air missiles. The Washington Times reported last Friday that enhanced sanctions agreed upon by the major world powers, and now under consideration by the United Nations Security Council, include an implied carve-out for ground-to-air missiles — apparently a concession designed to bring Russia into the sanctions.
Iran is known to want purchase Russia’s S-300 ground to air system, and intelligence analysts believe it would use the system to protect its suspected nuclear weapons facilities from air attacks. Russia, under Israeli and US pressure, has so far resisted making such a sale….

HA’ARETZ – Report: Nuclear forum to ignore Iran, urge Israel to sign NPT
Iran may escape censure at a meeting of the 189 signatories of a global anti-nuclear arms pact despite growing concerns that Tehran might be developing atomic weapons, according to a draft declaration.
The United States and other countries say Iran is in breach of its obligations under the 1970 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a landmark arms-control pact that has been the focus of a month-long conference and review wrapping up this week.
A draft declaration prepared by conference president Libran Cabactulan of the Philippines fails to mention Iran or its nuclear program, though it names India, Pakistan and Israel as NPT holdouts. Diplomats said Iran had threatened to veto any final declaration if it was named.…

2. JP – ‚Iran deal is a diversion tactic‘  
   PM praises US sanctions effort, calls on PA to accept Jewish state. The uranium enrichment deal brokered by Turkey and Brazil is „a transparent Iranian ruse meant to divert the international public’s attention from sanctions,“ Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said during a special Knesset session on Tuesday evening.
   Addressing the assembled MKs, Netanyahu said the deal, which drew mixed responses from the permanent UN Security Council members and in particular the US, still left enough uranium in Iran’s possession to produce a nuclear weapon. He stressed that the agreement did not prevent Iran from continuing to enrich the fissile material to a high degree.
   „This proposal also guarantees Iran the right to take back at any point the kilograms [of uranium] transferred to Turkey,“ Netanyahu said, praising Washington for deciding to go forward in its pursuit of Security Council countermeasures…

   Iran merely seeking to delay sanctions, will never agree to enrich uranium abroad
   The seemingly dramatic agreement we were just informed of, which emerged from Iran’s talks with world powers, will not prompt a solution to the crisis, or the disappearance of the danger of a nuclear bomb at the hands of the Ayatollah regime. This issue will be making news – and not necessarily good ones – for a long time to come.
   If the agreement reported by the Turkish foreign minister Sunday is indeed a result of the talks between Tehran and Ankara, then this is a nice achievement for the Iranians that will somewhat delay the international sanctions against them, grant them a bonus in the public opinion theater, and mostly provide an alibi for the Russians and Chinese to maintain excellent economic ties with Tehran….
