        TEHRAN — Iran has test fired its home-built surface-to-surface Fateh 110 missile, state television reported on Wednesday, less than a week after a similar test was carried out on another missile.
        The television showed a sand-coloured missile being launched from a vehicle and blasting into the sky from a desert terrain, leaving behind a thick plume of smoke. It did not say when the missile was fired.
        Iran’s English-language Press TV said the short-range Fateh 110 (Conqueror) missile is nine metres (29 feet) long and weighs 3,500 kilograms (7,700 pounds).
        The channel’s website quoted Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi as saying that the third generation Fateh 110 was a „single stage solid propellant“ missile.
        He did not specify the exact range of the missile but Iran has previously paraded a version of Fateh 110 which it said could travel between 150 and 200 kilometres (90 to 125 miles).
        „This version works on solid fuel, so compared to previous generations it has an increased range and accuracy. Its preparation as well as launching systems are speedier,“ Vahidi said.
        „This missile, which is in the short-range class, has added new features to the country’s missile system.“

      Iran is prepared to sell weapons to Lebanon if Beirut asks for help in equipping its military, the Islamic Republic’s defense minister said Wednesday.
      Gen. Ahmad Vahidi’s comments come one day after the leader of Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah group, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, called on the Lebanese government to formally seek military assistance from Iran.
      „Lebanon is our friend,“ Vahidi was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency. „If there is a demand in this respect, we are ready to help that country and conduct weapons transactions with it.“
      In a televised speech on Tuesday, Nasrallah vowed that his Iranian-backed group could help secure the aid for Lebanon’s poorly equipped army.
      The Hezbollah leader made his suggestion after a U.S. congressman suspended $100 million of American       military aid to Lebanon earlier this month over concerns the weapons could be used against Israel and that Hezbollah may have influence over the Lebanese army.
      Lebanon’s government has since opened an account at the central bank to receive donations to help it purchase weapons for the military.
      But Beirut is not entirely dependent on U.S. military assistance, and has turned to other countries, including Russia and Arab nations, for assistance in the past.
      Iran is a key supporter of Hezbollah, believed to funnel it weapons and millions of dollars in funding, though Tehran denies arming the Shiite group.

    5. WIENERZEITUNG – Irans zweitmächtigster Mann, Ali Rafsanjani, übt harsche Kritik an Präsident Ahmadinejad – Zwist in Irans Klerus: Der Hai zeigt Zähne-  Rafsanjani spricht von „desolater politischer Situation“. –  Khamenei beruft Kommission zu Foltervorwürfen gegen Bassij-Granden ein.
      Teheran/Wien. Strengste Sicherheitskontrollen, mehrere dutzend Sicherheitskräfte und ein Gebäudekomplex, der einem Labyrinth gleicht. Das Gelände des so genannten Schlichtungsrates, Irans Vermittlungsinstanz zwischen Parlament und Wächterrat, ist in diesen Tagen besonders gut besucht. Denn der Hausherr, Ex-Präsident Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, ist einer der gefürchteten Kritiker der Regierung rund um Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Pünktlich zu seinem 76. Geburtstag nutzte er den Medienrummel rund um seine Person, um seine Sorge über den „politisch desolaten Zustand des Iran“ medienwirksam kundzutun. Vorher war es monatelang ruhig um ihn geworden, doch Kenner des Gottesstaates wussten, dass er nur auf den richtigen Augenblick wartet, um ein lautstarkes Zeichen von sich zu geben.
      Nun zeigt der wegen seines spärlichen Bartwuchses auch als „Haifisch“ bezeichnete moderate Politiker wieder seine Zähne: „Seit den Präsidentschaftswahlen brodelt es. Herr Ahmadinejad hat Aussagen getätigt, die einfach nicht der Wahrheit entsprechen. Hierbei legt er sich direkt mit dem Großteil der Kleriker des Landes, der festen Stütze der islamischen Republik, an. Viele von uns haben daher eine harsche Replik des obersten Führers Ali Khamenei erwartet, die bisher ausgeblieben ist“, spricht Rafsanjani mit zittriger Stimme. Und weiter: „Unter dem Deckmantel der Kritik gegen mich, gegen Mohammad Khatami, Nategh-Nouri und Mehdi Karroubi, die wir allesamt Präsidenten oder Parlamentspräsidenten waren, hat Herr Ahmadinejad eine rote Linie überschritten und die Errungenschaften der Geistlichkeit zunichte gemacht. Wir werden nicht tatenlos zusehen und einige werden sich noch wundern.“

      August 21, 2010 marked the official inauguration in Bushehr of Iran’s first nuclear power plant, which was built by
      Russia. It seems that this event finally put an end to the drawn-out ordeal, which in recent years has been used as leverage for international pressure on Iran and has been riddled with question marks. The plant’s inauguration was marked by a celebratory ceremony attended by Iran’s vice president and head of its atomic energy organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, and the head of Russia’s atomic agency (ROSATOM), Sergei Kiriyenko. The operation of loading the 163 nuclear fuel rods from Russia began in advance of the ceremony, thereby launching the preparatory stage for the plant’s start-up, which is slated to take place in late September 2010.
      The establishment of power reactors in Bushehr to generate electricity was begun already under the shah, apparently part of a grand plan that included the option to produce nuclear weapons. The reactors were supposed to be erected by a number of foreign companies; the first pair of reactors were under construction by the German company KWU at the fall of the shah’s regime. The first reactor, begun in 1974, was 85 percent complete at the time of the revolution, but construction stopped entirely. Iraq bombed the reactors‘ center a number of times during the war with Iran. At the end of the war, the German company refused to continue construction and Iran was forced to find another country that would be willing to continue the project.
      Iran saw the continuation of the development as a prestigious goal, though on the face of it there was no economic justification for the erection of power reactors in Iran, due to the abundance of oil to generate electricity as well as the massive investment required. In 1995, Russia signed contracts with Iran agreeing to complete the construction of the first two reactors by installing Russian-type VVER-1000 reactors in the original buildings that had survived from the shah era. These are large reactors, as any smaller reactors would not be economically worthwhile in light of today’s technology. It was clear, though, that fundamental changes to the buildings would be necessary since the Russian reactors were too big for the German infrastructure. The first contract with a company called Atomstroiexport was for the sum of $800 million. Upon operation, the reactor is estimated to produce 915 megawatts of electricity. As in every non-standard project, the erection of the reactor took much longer than expected and cost considerably more than the original estimate. After lengthy deliberations, Iran signed a contract with Russia for the supply of nuclear fuel to the reactor, whereby Iran must return the irradiated fuel to Russia. The purpose of this contract is to ensure Iran a supply of fuel, which it does not (yet) have the capability to produce on its own, and to ensure that the said fuel will not be used to produce plutonium on Iranian soil. Russia began supplying the fuel to Iran in December 2007. The loading of the fuel into the reactor, begun on August 21, 2010, followed charges from the West that the reactor might be used for military purposes.

      Eine Regierungsbehörde im Iran betreibt ganz offiziell einen Internet-Server für Raubkopien und verteilt darüber Programme wie MicrosoftOffice und Adobe Photoshop. Auch die Cracks und Seriennummern liefert die Behörde gleich mit.
      Die Iranian Research Organisation for Science and Technology (IROST) verbreitet offiziell Raubkopien im Internet. Die zentrale Wissenschafts- und Technologiebehörde der iranischen Regierung bietet auf einem Server kommerzielle und urheberrechtlich geschützte Programme zum freien Download an. Dazu zählen alle Versionen von Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop und Premiere aber auch Bildschirmschoner und ähnliche Tools. Wie das Magazin TorrentFreak berichtet, befinden sich auf dem Server auch die Seriennummern der Programme oder so genannte Cracks, also Mini-Programme zum Knacken des Kopierschutzes.

    8. SHORTNEWS – Iranischer Kommandeur enthüllt Pläne für möglichen Vergeltungsschlag
      Einer Zeitung in Kuwait hat ein Kommandeur der iranischen Revolutionsgarden erzählt, wie die islamische Republik auf einen möglichen Angriff auf das iranische Atomprogramm reagieren wird. Egal woher der Angriff kommen würde, der erste Schritt des Vergeltungsschlags würde gegen Israel gerichtet sein.
      Der Iran wird demnach alle israelischen Städte massiv mit Raketen beschießen. Eine Ausnahme für den Reaktor in Dimona wird es nicht geben. Die iranischen Revolutionsgarden würden außerdem die gesamte Golfregion, also auch Länder wie Jordanien und Irak, als in den totalen Krieg involviert betrachten.
      Die USA haben mehr als 100 Militärbasen in der Golfregion, die alle in der Reichweite der iranischen Waffen liegen, so der Kommandeur. In Kuwait haben die USA aktuell neue Patriot-Raketen stationiert. Beobachter sehen auch dies als Zeichen, dass ein Militärschlag gegen den Iran nicht vom Tisch ist.

      TEL AVIV, 26. August (RIA Novosti). Auf die Gefahr, die der Iran für Israel und die ganze Welt darstellt, hat Israels Präsident Shimon Peres am Mittwoch bei seinem Treffen mit dem Chef der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde IAEO, Yukio Amano, verwiesen.
      „Israel und der Rest der Welt sind vom Iran gefährdet, der unbeirrt mit einem Kernwaffeneinsatz droht“, sagte Peres. „Das Atomprogramm eines Landes darf nicht getrennt von der Natur des herrschenden Regimes betrachtet werden.“
      Mit dem IAEO-Chef behandelte Israels Präsident Probleme der Region und Irans gewachsene nukleare Ambitionen, teilt der Pressedienst von Peres mit.
      Bei seinem ersten Israel-Besuch nach dem Amtsantritt am 1. Dezember 2009 traf Amano mit dem Minister für strategische Fragen, Moshe Yaalon, und dem Chef der israelischen Atomenergiebehörde

        French first lady Carla Bruni- Sarkozy published a letter today in three national media outlets supporting an Iranian mother sentenced to death by stoning after being convicted of adultery.
        The case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has drawn international condemnation after the mother of two was sentenced to death.         Bruni-Sarkozy called on the Iranian authorities to grant clemency. „Judges must understand it, Sakineh, your name has become a symbol across the globe,“ she wrote.
        „My husband will plead your cause,“ Bruni-Sarkozy added in the letter published in         Liberation newspaper, Elle magazine and La Regle du Jeu’s web site.

      Iran’s parliament is preparing to discuss a bill this week that would allow men to marry additional wives without the consent of their first wife, and would tax dowries.
      It is called the Family Protection Bill, but it is better known as the antifamily bill.
      Women’s rights activists say the bill, first proposed by President Mahmud Ahmadinejad’s cabinet in 2007, would pave the way for polygamy, harm the family structure, and set back the battle against discriminatory laws in the Islamic republic, where women have second-class legal status.
      Activists say the bill gives men a free hand to abuse the system and deprive women from any right within the family.
      Supporters say the bill is intended to reinforce Islamic principles, with legislator Mohammad Dehghan arguing that it would defend the rights of women and girls who for some reason cannot have an exclusive marriage.
      Under Islamic law as applied in Iran, men can take up to four wives. However, polygamy is not widespread in Iran, and many citizens condemn the practice.

Für vier Musikstudenten aus dem Iran ist beim Versuch, nach Österreich zu kommen, um an der Sommerakademie in Horn teilzunehmen, ein Traum geplatzt. Die österreichische Botschaft in Teheran verweigerte ihnen das Visum. Nur einer von fünf Antragstellern durfte reisen.
      „Wir sind an die Sache herangegangen wie immer, haben Einladungen verschickt“, erklärt Festival-Geschäftsführer Nikolaus Straka. „Doch in vier Fällen wurde von der Botschaft in Teheran zehn Tage vor Festival-Beginn die Einreise abgelehnt.“ Begründung erfuhr man in Horn keine: Datenschutz! „Wir bedauern das sehr, die anderen vier wären sehr gerne gekommen“, so Straka. „Das schaut schon sehr nach Schikane aus.“
      Mit aller Vehemenz unterstützt wurde Allegro Vivo bei seinen vergeblichen Bemühungen um eine gute Lösung von der Bezirkshauptmannschaft Horn. Doch auch diese Interventionen nützten nichts.
      Massive Kritik kommt von den Grünen. „200 Euro für die Visa hatten die jungen Menschen schon berappt. Das Geld ist ebenso futsch wie das für die Tickets“, heißt es in einer Aussendung zum gegenständlichen Fall. „Eine neue Posse in Sachen Angst vor Ausländern. Jetzt trifft es schon den Kulturbereich!“
      Klubchefin Dr. Madeleine Petrovic: „Hier trifft es Studenten aus einem Land, wo die wenigen demokratischen Kräfte gegen ein diktatorisches Regime ankämpfen. Und von Österreich bekommen die jungen Leute dann erneut einen Schlag ins Gesicht.“ Kunst und Kultur sollten die Völker verbinden. „Wenn wir schon so weit sind, Angst vor ausländischen Künstlern zu haben, geben wir Kräften wie der FPÖ eine Macht, die um jeden Preis verhindert werden sollte.“

    6. NWRI – Iran: Erstes Todesurteil für Frau, die während der Aufstände verhaftet wurde
       NWRI – Es gibt glaubhafte Berichte darüber, dass die Todesstrafe für Grau Farah (Elmira) Vazehan einen neuen Abschnitt der Brutalität und Frauenverachtung des religiös faschistoiden Regimes im Iran darstellt. Frau Vazehan wurde wegen Familienkontakten zu Bewohnern aus Ashraf verhaftet. In Camp Ashraf leben Mitglieder der Volksmudschaheddin Iran (PMOI/MEK). Zusätzlich zur Todesstrafe wurde sie zu zwei Jahren Haft und einer Geldstrafe verurteilt.
      Frau Vazehan ist die erste weibliche politische Gefangene, die seit dem Ausbruch der Aufstände im letzten Jahr zum Tode verurteilt wurde.
      Sie wurde zusammen mit zwei ihrer Kinder am 29. Dezember 2009, zwei Tage nach den Aufständen zum Ashura Tag, von Agenten des Ministeriums für Geheimdienste und Sicherheit (MOIS) verhaftet, nachdem diese eine brutale Hausdurchsuchung durchführten.       A few weeks ago, according to official and private reports, the Iranian air force shot down three drones near the southwestern city of Bushehr, where a Russian-supplied nuclear reactor has just started up. When the Revolutionary Guards inspected the debris, they expected to find proof of high-altitude spying. Instead, the Guards had to report to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei that the air force had blasted Iran’s own unmanned aircraft out of the sky.

      TEHRAN (AFP) – Three anti-government protesters who died in a notorious jail have been dubbed „martyrs“ by an Iranian official body, a move which would ensure benefits for their families, a report said on Wednesday.
      Mohammad Kamrani, Amir Javadifar and Mohsen Ruholamini have been named as „martyrs“ by Iran’s Foundation of Martyrs and Veteran Affairs, the hardline Kayhan newspaper reported.
      „After the bitter events of last year’s election which led to crimes in Kahrizak prison, the three deceased there were pronounced as martyrs,“ it reported, quoting an unnamed source from the foundation.
      The family of a person declared a martyr will be „offered various facilities in the cultural, social, economical and welfare fields,“ the website of the foundation said.
      The deaths of the three men caused major embarrassment to the Islamic republic, which after months of denial acknowledged the protesters had died at the Kahrizak detention centre due injuries

      Der Chef der iranischen Atomenergiebehörde, Ali Akbar Salehi, sagte unterdessen am Mittwoch, nach dem Bushehr-Projekt wolle sich sein Land auf die Uran-Erkundung und -Gewinnung konzentrieren. Auf einem Drittel des iranischen Territoriums habe es noch keine Erkundungsarbeiten gegeben, zitierte die Agentur Isna. Bislang war die Uran-Förderung im Iran nur gering und erreichte höchstens 20 Tonnen jährlich.

    5. JTA – Lawmakers ask Obama to enforce Iran sanctions
      WASHINGTON (JTA) — Two U.S. congressmen asked President Obama to bar a Russian oil company from doing business in the United States because it supplies Iran.
      Reps. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Ron Klein (D-Fla.) wrote a letter to President Obama calling his attention to violations of the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2010 and asked him to immediately enforce the law. Kirk and Klein are leaders of a bipartisan effort to limit gasoline supply in Iran to help prevent the country from obtaining nuclear capabilities.
      In the letter, they state that Russian oil company Lukoil supplied Tehran with 250,000 barrels of gasoline within the last month. The company continues to own gas stations in the United States and is listed as a „scrutinized company“ on Illinois State Board of Investment and Florida State Board of Administration lists. The representatives asked Obama to enforce the sanctions by not continuing to allow Lukoil to operate in the United States.
      „Time is running out to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran,“ Kirk and Klein said in a statement. „Despite your offer of engagement, Tehran remains undeterred in advancing its illicit nuclear program and exporting terrorism around the world. Sanctions represent the most viable diplomatic tool to pressure the government of Iran to change course and meet its international obligations. Without rigorous enforcement, however, our efforts will be rendered from ineffective to inexcusable.“
