  U.S. frustration with German chancellor Angela Merkel and her foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, seems to have reached a breaking point this week. Germany’s recalcitrant position about shutting down Iran’s main financial conduit in Europe – the Hamburg-based European-Iranian Trade Bank (EIH) – prompted a bipartisan group of U.S. senators on February 1 to issue a strongly worded letter to German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle.

  IranOLA – SKANDAL IM SPERRBEZIRK!
  Ich bin fassungslos über diese Nachricht. Ali Akbar Salehi, Irans neuer Aussenminister wird laut EU Abkommen die Einreise verboten, aber da er doch nach München zur Sicherheitskonferenz fliegen kann, zieht die EU seine Verbannung zurück.

  Wie äußerst großzügig von der EU und vor allem demokratisch. Ich bin extremst enttäuscht von dieser Entwicklung. Sobald es um wirtschaftliche Interessen geht, wird alles was nicht passt, passend gemacht und das nicht nur von der eigenen Regierung, sondern auch noch von der EU.
  Hinzu kommt noch, dass Zeitungen wie z.B. die Süddeutsche Zeitung lediglich über die Sicherheitskonferenz berichten, dass es wegen der Absperrungen zu Parkplatzproblemen und Beeinträchtigungen im Straßenverkehr kommen kann oder eine seitenlange Werbung als Zeitungsartikel verkleidet über diese Münchener Sicherheitskonferenz…
3. JTA – Iran says NGO website is Mossad tool
  JERUSALEM (JTA) — Iran says it has arrested several Iranian citizens who volunteered information to a website offering cash rewards for information on missing Israeli airman Ron Arad.
  Iranian Intelligence Minister Heidar Moslehi on Monday announced the arrests, saying the Born to Freedom Foundation, which offers $10 million to anyone who provides information for “proven information leading to soldiers missing in action,” including Ron Arad, is a branch of the Israeli Mossad intelligence agency. Arad has been missing since crashing in Lebanon in 1986.
  “The Zionist regime is interested in finding spies in different countries using this site and enlisting them in order to lead its intelligence operations in Muslim states,” Moslehi said.
  “The Zionist regime has run the institution inside the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighboring states even in forms of NGO some 20 years ago under a humanitarian cover.”
  Moslehi said that Iranian intelligence had identified a large number of citizens who had made contact with the site and urged others who also had made contact to come forward, promising that their punishment would be lighter if they did.
  He also told the Iranian News Agency that “We used some of these people in order to penetrate Mossad base, and that is how we have made use of them.”
4. WJC – British defense secretary: Iran might build atomic bomb by next year
  Britain’s Defense Secretary Liam Fox has told the House of Commons that Iran may be capable of building a nuclear weapon by next year. Fox disagreed with the retired Mossad Director Meir Dagan who had said earlier this month that Iran would not be able to build a nuclear bomb before 2015. Fox said the West should be wary of optimism over Iran’s nuclear program and make decisions on the basis of the most pessimistic assessment of its capability. His remarks follow the failure of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States in talks earlier this month to persuade Iran to open up its nuclear activities to more scrutiny.
  Tehran claims it is only pursuing nuclear power for civilian ends, but Western countries believe the Iranians are working on a covert weapons program. “We know from previous experience, not least from what happened in North Korea, that the international community can be caught out, assuming that things are more rosy than they are,” Fox told the British lawmakers. “We should therefore be entirely clear. It is entirely possible that Iran may be on the 2012 end of that spectrum.” The Conservative politician said that the West should act “in accordance with that warning.”
5. WJC – Diker urges Huckabee to support campaign against Iranian regime for incitement to genocide
  World Jewish Congress Secretary General-Designate Dan Diker has called on Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and one of the candidates who in 2008 sought the Republican Party’s nomination for the US presidency, to lend his support to an international campaign for the referral of the Iranian regime to the UN Security Council over Tehran’s incitement to genocide, in particular repeated calls by Iranian leaders to destroy Israel. Diker pointed out that Iran was the only UN member state that openly denied the Holocaust while calling for genocide backed by nuclear weapons against the Jewish people in their own state. Iran was in violation of the 1948 Convention for the Prevention of Genocide, to which Tehran is a signatory. He said that the Iranian regime was “denying the Holocaust while threatening and planning the next nuclear Holocaust.”

  Die iranischen Machthaber schauen hoffnungsvoll auf die neue Massenbewegung in der arabischen Welt. Eine neue Achse des Islam sei im Entstehen begriffen.
  Der iranische Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami predigt regelmäßig bei den sogenannten Freitagspredigten in Teheran, wo seit der islamischen Revolution von 1979 regelmäßig „Tod Israel und den USA” gebrüllt wird.
  Am 28. Januar betete Ayatollah Khatami die „neue Achse des Islam im Nahen Osten” herbei. Für ihn zeichnet sich eine solche Achse infolge der Protestbewegung in Tunesien, in Ägypten, in Jordanien und in Jemen ab, berichtete IRNA. Ayatollah Khatami sprach den früheren US-amerikanischen Präsidenten Bush an und sagte: „Er hatte die Perspektive eines neuen Nahen Osten in Aussicht gestellt. Er glaubte, dass er und die Zionisten die Region kontrollieren werden. […] Ich spreche es direkt aus. Der Nahe Osten wird sich als eine Achse des Islam, als eine Achse der Religion und der religiösen Volksherrschaft formieren.”
  Ayatollah Khatami meint, dass die tunesische Bevölkerung eine 23-jährige Diktatur gestürzt habe und spricht von den „Nachbeben der islamischen Revolution”, die sich 1979 im Iran ereignet hat. Ayatollah Khatami behauptet auch, dass die „westlichen Medien bemüht seien, die neuen Bewegungen als „demokratische Proteste hinzustellen und sie wollen den islamischen Charakter dieser Proteste verheimlichen.”

  Am Freitag, den 11. Februar findet in der Residenz des Botschafters des iranischen Regimes in Wien-Hietzing der alljährliche Empfang zur Feier des Jahrestages der islamischen Revolution statt. Diese Revolution hat dem Land eine seit über 30 Jahren andauernde Terrorherrschaft beschert. Während das Regime im Iran seine Legitimität bei großen Teilen der Bevölkerung längst verloren hat, hofieren Politiker, Wirtschaftsvertreter und Diplomaten, die sich zu solch einem Empfang einladen lassen, weiterhin die Diktatur aus Ajatollahs und Revolutionsgarden. Trotz des unbeirrten Festhaltens am Nuklearwaffen- und Raketenprogramm, das eine Gefahr für die gesamte Region und eine existenzielle Bedrohung für Israel darstellt, suchen EU-Politiker immer wieder den völlig nutzlosen Dialog mit dem Regime, anstatt endlich die demokratisch-rechtsstaatliche und säkulare Opposition zu unterstützen. Anstatt dem Regime durch scharfe und umfassende Sanktionen die Fortsetzung seiner Projekte zu verunmöglichen, ist die Europäische Union weiterhin der wichtigste Handelspartner des Regimes und auch in Österreich steigt das Handelsvolumen mit dem Iran weiter an.

  Human rights organizations report that in January 2011 alone, Iran has executed at least 65 people, while another 43 executions took place in the 10 days before the new year. This is a rate of about one person every eight hours, an unprecedented “execution binge” even by wanton Iranian standards. It has gone largely unnoticed.
  This past weekend, The Netherlands froze its ties with Iran to protest the hanging of a Dutch-Iranian woman, Zahara Bahrami. She had been executed on trumped-up drug charges, but her real “crime” had been to protest the fraudulent June 2009 election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Her execution came just after the hanging of two other post-election demonstrators in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, and the sentencing of seven other protestors to death.

  The all-important matter of
  Iran’s timetable for achieving a military nuclear capability surfaces periodically. The 2007 US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was never formally modified, the pronouncements of various US officials and, more recently, Israel’s deputy prime minister Yaalon and the retiring Mossad chief Dagan have all pointed to mid-decade as an approximate target date. On January 24, 2011, the new head of IDF Military Intelligence, Maj. Gen. Aviv Kohavi, said, that it was the Iranian leader’s decisions that will determine the timescale of the project: “Based on their infrastructure, technical know-how and the amount of uranium they have, after he makes that decision, they will have nuclear weapons within a year or two.” Dagan himself revised his previous estimate and stated that in a worst case scenario, Iran could have a nuclear device much sooner than 2015.
  The contradictory assessments can be reconciled if one takes into account that different estimates may be based on different sources of information and on different scenarios. In the case of Iran, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reports provide reliable and verified technical information on which some estimates can be based. According to the latest IAEA report, Iran has a sufficient amount of low-enriched uranium (LEU) that, if further enriched to military – high values (HEU), could be used to produce the cores for at least two nuclear explosive devices. Iran certainly has the technical capability to do so. It would take six months to produce the amount of HEU needed for the first core, and another six months to produce the core itself, meaning one year from the moment of decision.
