They attacked Michael Freilich, an ultra-Orthodox Jew from the right-wing party NVA, who lit a menorah at the country’s parliament. “There is no place for religion in politics, secularism must be absolute,” the critics, including the party of the Jewish MP, argued. “I wanted to convey a message of courtesy, to tell the Belgian people about the Jewish holiday of lights,” Freilich explained.
