(May 18, 2023 / JNS) The earliest recorded use of the term “shootout”—defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “a sustained exchange of shooting, a gun-fight”—comes from a 1953 New York Times article, which refers to a “justly famous shoot-out between the Earps and the Clantons in the O-K Corral.”
