Palestinian division of UN Secretary General Secretariat made members of the extremist Neturei Karta organization the defining image of both its Facebook and Twitter accounts | Hillel Neuer | Facebook
Dear United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres,
The Palestinian division of your Secretariat has just decided to make members of the extremist Neturei Karta organization—self-hating Jews who openly call for the destruction of Israel—the defining image of both its Facebook and Twitter accounts.
This is the same fringe group that infamously participated in the Holocaust denial conference hosted in Tehran in 2006 by the Islamic Republic of Iran — an antisemitic event that your predecessor rightly condemned, together with the international community.
Like your United Nations Palestine Rights Committee, Iran’s then president Mahmoud Ahamadinejad also attached great importance to the presence of Neturei Karta at the conference — not because they are Holocaust deniers per se, but because the primary theme of Ahmadinejad’s remarks was that „The Zionist regime will be wiped out, and humanity will be liberated.“ And the common denominator was that the Neturei Karta group advocates the same eliminationist approach toward Israel, a United Nations member state.
Accordingly, I urge you to immediately distance yourself from the hateful message conveyed by this U.N. division’s new cover photo — and to fire the U.N. official responsible for posting it.
As we now mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations Charter, a response to the Nazi antisemitism that shocked the conscience of humanity, we demand that the world body live up to its founding promise.
Sincerely yours,
Hillel C. Neuer
