A telephone call on the morning of Sept. 5 1972, woke up three east German journalists who had been sent to cover the Munich Olympics. This was the first Olympics Games in which East Germany was participating as an official, independent entity – a great achievement for its communist regime, which had been fighting for international recognition for decades. This was also the first Olympics held on German soil since World War II.
