Ashdod-Yam Fortress was built in the late 7th century BC by a friend of the Caliph ‘Abd al-Malkh (685- 705 CE) on the remains of a Byzantine settlement. The fort served as part of a coastal defense system designed to prevent raids of The Byzantines from the sea.
