Israel was elected on Monday to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), garnering 154 votes, more than two-thirds of UN member states.
It is the country’s first time elected to the council, which has 54 members and, together with the Security Council and Human Rights Council, makes up the UN’s big three bodies. ECOSOC deals with economic, development, environmental and humanitarian issues.
