Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko intervened to prevent the Kyiv city council from naming a street in honor of a Nazi collaborator and an SS official, following a complaint by Israeli Ambassador Michael Brodsky, the New York Sun reported Tuesday.
According to Ukrainian Jewish Committee Director Eduard Dolinsky, a street in the Ukrainian capital was set to be renamed after Volodymyr Kubiyovych, according to a motion adopted by the city council. During the Holocaust, Kubiyovych was heavily involved in the formation of the Waffen-SS Galizien, a Nazi military force composed of Ukrainian volunteers.
