AFP – Berlin zurückhaltend zu Frankreichs Sanktionsforderunge n gegen Iran
Berlin (AFP) – Die Bundesregierung hat zurückhaltend auf Frankreichs Drängen für härtere Sanktionen gegen den Iran reagiert. Deutschland habe den Brief des französischen Außenministers Bernard Kouchner an die 27 Mitglieder der Europäischen Union erhalten, sagte eine Sprecherin des Auswärtigen Amtes am Freitag in Berlin. In der Tat müsse es Vorbereitungen für den Fall geben, dass der Iran nicht mit der Staatengemeinschaft zusammenarbeite. Dazu müssten die fünf ständigen Mitglieder im UN-Sicherheitsrat „weiter arbeiten“. Der Sicherheitsrat müsse seinen Druck auf den Iran aufrechterhalten.

  PARIS —French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner has urged his European Union partners to pressure Iran to end its „nuclear defiance“ by taking economic sanctions, the foreign ministry said.
  In a letter to his 26 colleagues of the EU released Wednesday by his ministry, Kouchner said: „In parallel to negotiations on a new UN Security Council resolution, which must be pursued, I propose that we start right away exploring together the possibility of new European measures.“
  The issue is likely to be discussed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on 15 October.
  „It is vital that the EU today show its determination and that it set an example once again by taking the initiative of firm new measures, to step up the pressure on Iran, so that it responds, at last, to the demands of the Security Council,“ Kouchner said.

  Diesen Sommer fand im Iran die größte Exekutionswelle seit 1984 statt. Mehrfach wurden Gruppen von Menschen auf öffentlichen Plätzen gehängt und das Spektakel im Fernsehen live übertragen. In keinem Land der Welt werden laut amnesty international mehr Kinder und Jugendliche zum Tod verurteilt als im Iran.[2] Zugleich traf diesen Sommer Christoph Leitl, der Präsident der österreichischen Wirtschaftskammer mit dem iranischen Wirtschaftsminister Jafani zusammen und erkärte: „Rege Wirtschaftskontakte verbinden. … Wir (suchen) [im Iran] das Verbindende und nicht das Trennende.“[3]
  Diesen Sommer erlebte im Iran auch die Hinrichtung durch Steinigung ein Come-Back. „Nach elf Jahren Haft ist im Nordosten Irans ein Mann gesteinigt worden, der wegen Ehebruchs verurteilt war“, berichtete die Frankfurter Allgemeine. Elf Jahre Knast wegen Ehebruchs, anschließend Steinigung. Es wird befürchtet, dass die Frau, die mit diesem Mann einvernehmlich zusammengelebt hatte, ebenfalls getötet werden soll.[4] Zugleich erklärte diesen Sommer der halbstaatliche Konzern „Österreichische Mineralölverwaltung“ , kurz OMV, der im April 2007 einen Vorvertrag über einen 22 Mrd. Euro-Deal mit dem Iran unterzeichnet hatte, in ganzseitigen Inseraten: „Die OMV begegnet ihren Geschäftspartnern auf gleicher Augenhöhe. Schließlich entspricht der Respekt vor Mensch und Umwelt unseren ethischen Prinzipien.“

  Considered as a hardline politician, Haddad-Adel heads the Islamic Iran Developers Coalition in the parliament, a party which insists that all policy should be firmly rooted within Islamic law.
  His daughter is married to a son of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei.

  BRUSSELS (EJP)—The Speaker of Majlis, the Iranian parliament, Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel, has canceled his scheduled visit to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, where he was due to address Thursday the parliamentary assembly, Iran’s news agency IRNA reported.
  According to the agency, the decision was made in protest to „the dual behavior“ of the 47-member states Council of Europe officials.
  The speaker’s decision was made after it was reported that a number of members of the Council of Europe parliament have met with the leader of the Mujahideen Khalq or People’s Mujahedin of Iran organization (MKO), an Iraq-based group that advocates the overthrow of Iran’s current government.
  Maryam Rajavi, head of The National Council of Resistance – the Paris-based political wing of MKO – spoke Monday to MPs from the Council of Europe.

  The official news agency IRNA reported that the Iranian Majlis Speaker had cancelled his trip due to the „dual behaviour of COE officials in their alleged fight against terrorism“, adding that „certain COE officials“ had recently met with the leader of the Monafeqin [the Iranian government’s term for the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MeK) opposition group].

AFP – Iran speaker scraps Europe speech after opponent invited
TEHRAN — The speaker of Iran’s parliament cancelled a speech to the Council of Europe in protest at an invitation to the head of the outlawed Iranian opposition, the official IRNA news agency reported Thursday.
IRNA said Gholam-Ali Hadad Adel scrapped the planned speech in Strasbourg after Maryam Rajavi, president of the banned National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), met with European lawmakers on Monday.
Hadad Adel had been due to speak to the council’s parliamentary assembly on Thursday in his capacity as the current head of the Asian parliamentary group.
„After the meeting between certain officials from the Council of Europe and the chief of the terrorist group of hypocrites, the parliament speaker has cancelled his visit to Strasbourg,“ IRNA said.
The NCRI is the political arm of the People’s Mujahedeen, the banned armed opposition to Iran’s clerical authorities. It claimed bomb attacks and shootings on political leaders inside Iran in the 1980s and 1990s.

WASHINGTON — Iranian technology is on pace to build a long-range missile that could strike the United States within a decade, a high-level Pentagon official told FOX News.
But a successful test of a missile defense program completed last week is giving military leaders more confidence that an airborne attack from Iran can be thwarted — if the United States is able to convince Europe to go along with the plans to build an anti-missile system there against strong Russian opposition.
„Most of the intelligence experts predict that sometime before 2015, or in that time frame, the Iranians will have developed the capabilities to threaten the United States, from a missile technology perspective, „Lt. Gen. Henry Obering, chief of the U.S. missile defense program, said Tuesday in a Pentagon interview with FOX News. Of concern Obering said is Iran’s ability to take shorter range technology and improving it to longer and longer ranges.

October 5, 2007 — Mohammad Ali Jafari, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said on September 29 that the „main responsibility“ of the corps now is to counter „internal threats.“ He added that the IRGC will confront any threat that might undermine the achievements of the Islamic republic.
Jafari’s comments are regarded by some analysts as a warning to domestic critics of the Iranian regime.
Jafari, who was appointed commander of the IRGC in early September, also said that the all-volunteer Basij militia will fall under the IRGC’s command. The Basij has reportedly been involved in a number of attacks on students and intellectuals. Jafari said those forces will adapt to meet current threats. Jafari said the threats against Iran have become increasingly complex, adding that, „We don’t have the right to remain silent.“
Afshari said he also believes the IRGC will play an important role in the March 2008 parliamentary elections in Iran.

Although many persist in denying it, I continue to believe that what September 11, 2001 did was to plunge us headlong into nothing less than another world war. I call this new war World War IV, because I also believe that what is generally known as the cold war was actually World War III, and that this one bears a closer resemblance to that great conflict than it does to World War II. Like the cold war, as the military historian Eliot Cohen was the first to recognize, the one we are now in has ideological roots, pitting us against Islamofascism, yet another mutation of the totalitarian disease we defeated first in the shape of Nazism and fascism and then in the shape of Communism; it is global in scope; it is being fought with a variety of weapons, not all of them military; and it is likely to go on for decades.
What follows from this way of looking at the last five years is that the military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq cannot be understood if they are regarded as self-contained wars in their own right. Instead we have to see them as fronts or theaters that have been opened up in the early stages of a protracted global struggle. The same thing is true of Iran. As the currently main center of the Islamofascist ideology against which we have been fighting since 9/11, and as (according to the State Department’s latest annual report on the subject) the main sponsor of the terrorism that is Islamofascism‘ s weapon of choice, Iran too is a front in World War IV. Moreover, its effort to build a nuclear arsenal makes it the potentially most dangerous one of all.

Last week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke at Columbia University in what university administrators there described as an event in the best American traditions of free speech. Earlier this week, however, a Columbus (Ohio) State Community College administrator expressly denied a request from student leaders to post a flier promoting Islamofascism Awareness Week amid what student leaders of the school’s chapter of the Terrorism Awareness Project say is a growing atmosphere of censorship and intimidation by college officials. The contrast between an Iranian dictator given an open forum at one of our country’s premiere academic institutions and students at a public college denied access to their own campus couldn’t be more stark.
