A few thoughts at the beginning of the Jewish New Year 5775 in supporting Israel | Uwe Becker
In his memories, David Ben-Gurion, the first Primeminister of Israel, cited from the fifth book of Moses, the Deuteronomy, that the Jewish people are the smallest of all nations and should by that stand in loyalty to their values and keep their spiritual virtues to have a brighter future.
Based on this understanding, Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, published his novel “Altneuland” in 1902, in which he drafted the vision of an ideal Jewish state in Palestine, with strong social and political structures and he concretizised his ideas, which he already propagated in his work “Der Judenstaat” in 1896.
What Herzl proclaimed as a wishful aim became reality half a century later, after the darkest chapter for the European Jewry, when on May 14., 1948 David Ben Gurion proclaimed the independence of Israel under the portrait of Herzl on the day of the end of the British mandate.
