- JTA – Iran supplied Syria with radar, report claims
(JTA) — Iran has supplied Syria with a sophisticated radar system that could provide an early warning of an Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Thursday’s report, which cites Israeli and U.S. officials, says the new radar also could benefit the Iran-backed Hezbollah, which is based in Lebanon and is believed to receive arms from Syria.
If Syria shares its radar information with Hezbollah, it could increase the accuracy of the terrorist organization’s own missiles, according to the report.
The radar system reportedly was transferred in mid-2009 and disclosed in recent months by two Israeli officials, two U.S. officials and a Western intelligence source, and confirmed Wednesday by the Israeli military, according to The Wall Street Journal. Iran and Syria have denied the transfer.
Israeli and U.S. officials told the newspaper that improved radar capability would give Syria and Iran better visibility of Israeli airspace and provide early warning of an Israeli strike.
Israel bombed an alleged nascent Syrian nuclear reactor in 2007, reportedly after jamming Syria’s radar. During the second Hezbollah war in 2006, Israeli planes flew in Lebanese airspace unimpeded, The Wall Street Journal quoted an Israeli pilot as saying. The pilot said he believes it will not be like that in a future war.- IKG – Israelische Kreise: Iran lieferte Radar-System an Syrien – Laut Bericht des „Wall Street Journal“

- YNET – Iran gains $9B in currency reserve shift – Central bank governor says Tehran’s foreign currency reserves ’suitable‘
Iran’s state TV quotes the country’s central bank governor as saying Tehran has gained the equivalent of $9 billion dollars by shifting its foreign currency reserves to euros and selling gold.
Mahmoud Bahmani on Monday described Iran’s foreign currency reserves as very „suitable,“ but did not provide a figure or qualify over what period of time the currency transactions took place.
The euro has been losing ground against the dollar amid concerns that Greece’s debt crisis could spill over to other euro zone countries. Gold, meanwhile, has been steadily increasing.
Iran said last year it would shift its currency reserves from the dollar to the euro, as the US pushed to boost sanctions against the country over its controversial nuclear program.

- JP – Iranian woman faces death by stoning – Woman’s lovers accused of murdering her husband.
An Iranian woman convicted of adultery has been sentenced to death by stoning. If carried out the sentence would be the first known stoning to take place in the Islamic Republic in years.
Sakineh Mohamamadi e Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz, was accused of having extramarital relations with two men who ended up killing her husband.
Infidelity is illegal in Iran, and usually punished with lashes and prison time. While the Iranian penal code allows for the death sentence in infidelity cases, execution by stoning is rare.
The case, first leaked to Radio Farda by women’s rights activist Soheila Vahdati, began in 2005 when Ashtiani was arrested for having „illicit relationships.“ She was convicted by a local court a year later and sentenced to 99 lashes and an unknown amount of time in prison, where she has remained since.
Following the original case, however, Ashtiani and her boyfriends were accused of murdering her husband. Ashtiani was convicted and sentenced to death by stoning.
She has denied any wrongdoing but reportedly asked local authorities for a pardon, stating simply „If I have done any wrong, I repent.“ The request for clemency was denied.
Mina Ahadi, an advocate for the International Committee Against Stoning, said the family has no news as to the status of the case.

- YNET – Ayatollahs left all alone – Iran shocked to see American, European chokehold on Tehran’s economy
The stunned Iran cannot believe it’s happening: The worst nightmare for the Ayatollah regime is taking shape right before its eyes, in the form of a complete chokehold on Iran’s economy within a few months. Iran’s soft underbelly is in the sights – oil and gas. The arrogant Ahmadinejad thought this day shall never come, yet the „higher power“ that guides him, in his view, apparently no longer works.
The US and Europe have decided to suffocate Iran’s economy, no less. This is no longer about playing games here and there or about lukewarm sanctions against Iranian companies here and there. This time, the target is the whole Iranian economy. For Israel and most Arab states, there could be no greater success: The state behind everything that destabilized the Middle East is being threatened with collapse.
At the end of June, the US Congress and Senate approved by a large majority a law banning global companies engaged in ties with Iran’s oil and gas industry from coming into the US. This is a comprehensive and strict law that will dry up Iran as it dried up Cuba. Once the law goes into effect, anyone in the most sensitive industry for the Iranians who goes into Iran will not be allowed to go into the US. (While Iran exports oil, it must import refined oil for cars and planes, and therefore its dependence on the world is high.) - YNET – Iran: Sanctions do not ban S-300 Russian missiles
Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says deal for supply of sophisticated air defense missiles concluded before fresh UN sanctions approved
A senior Iranian official says new UN sanctions would not prevent Russia from delivering sophisticated air defense missiles to Iran as agreed under a 2007 contract.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says the contract for delivery of the powerful S-300 air defense missiles to Iran was concluded before the UN Security Council approved new sanctions earlier this month and therefore had „nothing to do“ with the resolution.
Speaking to reporters in Damascus Thursday, Larijani said there were some „fluctuations“ in Russia’s position toward Iran. He said UN sanctions would affect his country „very little.“ The new sanctions concern Iran’s nuclear program.
Russia signed a deal to sell the missiles in 2007 but has delayed their delivery.
